My comeback review.

Hey guys,

like alot of player's I quit AoC after the 1st month because of all the bugs and bad preformance/ctd's/memory leaks etc etc.

Having read quite a few people saying how much the game had improved I decided to have another look,I re-rolled a ToS and have now gotten to level 48,for me 1 of the worst places in the game was the field of the dead(well as far as preformance and ctd's it was),anyway I wanted to play at least this far so I could give a decent account on how the game is now.

All I can say about the preformance is that it is like night and day compared to release,I run the game on high setting's(dual core 2.66,4gb ram,8800gt 512mb,vista 32)this was never possible before and even at release trying to run on medium was a challenge,The game is very smooth and I havent had 1 ctd or crash of any kind.

There alot more quests with voice acting that I enjoy and with better items dropping and more quests added the game is really great fun.

Joining a guild like MOST mmo's is very important and I was lucky to be invited into a really nice guild, alot of the members have stuck through the game from the begining and are very helpful, this has been good for me as I have been able to ask alot of questions on the games journey.

Is the game perfect? no it isnt, ofc it isnt! here are a couple of things I have come across some more annoying than others.

I have got to level 48 through questing and in all that time only had 1 quest that was bugged,a quick petition to the gm and 20 mins later they had completed that quest for me,very nicely done.

I sent money from my old guy (59 PoM) to my ToS but the money never arrived, contacted a gm who tried his best to help but it seems a bug excists that money could be sent to a deleted toon of the same name,I used the same name for my ToS as I did for an earlier alt when I played before, all the gm could do was send the money that alt had but it wasnt near the amount I sent..alittle annoying but not the end of the world.

The biggest bug for me/and other ToS guild members at least is the jolt healing spell, this is the only direct healing spell that we have(i.e not healing overtime)and when things start to heat up in battle this heal doesnt work,I would say the ratio is maybe 1 out of 10 times this heal will fail, which is very annoying and has caused my death on more than 1 occassion, hopefully this will be looked at for the next patch.

Thats about all the bad I can think of and the (dare I say it )Great things in this game overshadow any of the bad,I for 1 am very happy I came back and will be subbing to this game for sometime,I am so happy I have finally found an mmo that I can see myself playing for a long time and watching my guys evolve.....Man it has been alongtime since I could say that .

I hope this will be of help to some people that are maybe on the fench.

Sin.

Heh mate don't worry heal is not broken. You just don't understand the game mechanics. All big heals in game (pom/tos/bs) when casted adds a debuff to everyone who has been affected by it (doesn't matter whether he had full health or not). This debuff prevents any healing affect on the target that has this debuff running. (check ingame ... i know bear shaman one is called adrenaline surge)

  • daylight01daylight01 Member Posts: 2,250

Nah mate it isnt that,it also happens when I solo as it does the other ToS guys in the guild, even when I go to use this heal for the 1st time, usually on boss fights it wont work,we have all sent in a bug report and they have said they are looking into it.

I know what you are saying about "anyone healed by jolt can not be healed by this spell for x amount of time"but that isnt the case here, even on the 1st heal on myself when solo like I said sometimes doesnt work.

Hmm didn't know that such bug existed. It doesn't on bear shammy, thats for sure. Any ToS can confirm this bug?

  • ste2000ste2000 Member EpicPosts: 6,194

Yes the game now is ok.

I resubbed 1 month ago and I am enjoying it.

I managed to level a BS 60 and a Necro 40 (plus my old Guardian 72 which is still parked).

At the moment I didn't joined any guild, I am waiting to reach 70 with all 3 toons, but even outside of a guild the game is fairly fun.

Not sure if I am gonna stay for long though, I play on Aquilonia an RP server and the community is shit.

Funcom should really enforce RP, at the moment it feels like any other PvP server.

But that's pretty much my biggest problem with it.

I just came back for a second look myself and really could not get into the game. As a primary PvE player there was just not enough to keep me interested so I canceled. But I agree that a lot has improved, just not enough variety in the play for me.

Kill mobs and do quests so I can kill higher level mobs and do the next level of quests so I can kill higher level mobs and do the next level of quests till lvl 80 so I can level a alt Also the game still feels to much like a single player RPG for mr to pay a monthly fee for.

On my personal enjoyment scale I would rate the PvE side of the game at about a 7.5 now comparing it with EQII about a 8.0 and LoTRO about a 9.0  That is just my subjective opinion of course. If I was in a good guild I would probably add 1 to that rating. Back when it released I would not have given it much over a 4 or 5 and I still think it needs a lot of little touches. The graphics, music, and the cities "atmosphere" are all good to supurb. Combat is good, quests are ok maybe even a bit above average.  However the overall design still seems to be lacking the fine polish needed for me to pay to play. I would not ever call it amazing, but it is acceptable now. maybe in a year or two it will be amazing LOL.

FC does seem to realize what the problems are and seem to be working hard on correcting them. If I was not so wrapped up in my present game I would probably find a good guild and hang around for a few months to see what progress they can make. But at the moment there is no good reason for me to leave LoTRO, if I was a PvP oriented player I might look at it differently of course.

    I miss DAoC

I agree to your last points in particular. It would never have happened that a dev would go to the office Saturday night to sort out a problem like that item glitch (EU) after the merge and patch it in by the morning. After Craig took over, it has become more and more clear that FC care a great deal about this game and that they are willing to do whatever it takes to make it a success.

well mark the time and the date because this is the first time I can remember where we agree The game is certainly on the right track and I really think that Craig took a good long look at some other MMO companies and how they do business and said look if this is what it takes this is what we will do. I cannot help but think that if he had been in charge 2 years ago the mass exodus last summer would have never occured.

I look am looking forward to trying the game again in 6 months or a year. The game really is on the right track now and all they have to do is  keep the momentum up. My personal opinion is that it will take 9 months to a year before it would be a game that I could recommend to a PvE fan but that is a lot more positive than I would have thought I would be last summer.

    I miss DAoC

Glad to see some well thought out and constructive praise and criticism with the game. Raids and such are a bit lacking but as of yet I don't know of any guilds that have completed the hardest raids in the game though I know some finally seem to be closing in. Though compared to WoW there definitely isn't the same amount of endgame ( as would be expected). I can see how a strictly pve person could get bored after a couple months with this game. Hopefully with the next few upcoming updates they can satisify you pve hungry people as I love going on raids and the more the merrier. Hopefully funcom has released the free trial back than and you can drop LOTRO ;). Also, this is a social game and for me personally don't groups play a larger role than they did with EQ and SWG and such. But I've also found a great guild.

To OP if your on crimmeria and need some TOS tips by all means pm jaysins as I have an 80 TOS and can give you any pointers and such. VJ occasionally doesn't heal but I think for me it seems more like 1/100 if not less as it doesn't happen enough to bother me or for me to really notice. Maybe your casting concentration is too low? My advice to you is definitely roll a melee character as I always play casters and ranged and am enjoying the hell out of my hox. Circling, strafing and timing blows, combos and stuns is the most fun I've ever had melee combat for an mmo. Good luck to you and post an update once you hit 80 :). The next patch is going to be huge so I hope you enjoy it as I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks jaysins but I play on crom(EU server),

I have thought of a melee guy but I am having so much fun woth this ToS,I hit lvl 50 tonight and thinking of going into EP mountians,I think that it is great as with my PoM (at release)I was already in EP at lvl 48,no grind thus far and all looking good.

I never really got into the resources and crafting before,I was a gem cutter before and that was bugged, may I add it still is!

I have spent the last 3 hours just resource farming which I actually enjoyed and have taken weaponsmith this time, also nice to see the graphics are now in for the ToS spellweaving, when I played before the other ToS guys said they got no graphics for it.

All in all this game is moving in the right direction and although I was very annoyed at release with Funcom,I am willing to give them my cash as they seem to have the game's interest at heart, thats good enough for me.

any idea if they will have free time for those that cancelled back when it first came out?

loved the combat miss my Dark Templar (even though they were gimp back in the day) and wouldn't mind trying out the new fixes/content.

  • daylight01daylight01 Member Posts: 2,250

There has been talk of them offering some free time to past subscriber's but no official date on that,it could be after the upcomming big patch,or if the dx10 doesnt make it for the patch maybe after dx10 has been added.

Yeah, if you are done with the Noble district and valley of the dead then it is time for EM (48 is the level I got there with my ranger, and ToSes are a lot tougher). Then you have Ymirs pass, have to be at least level 53 to go there though.

The grind right now starts after 70, hopefully the new 80 dungeons and upcomming OT common district will fix that. The game is improving but the end game still needs a lot more work. However FC seems to be working on it.

I play on Crom too BTW

I know that the TOS is not the main choice for healer (quite the oppistite) but I havn't heard about a bugg with healing, maybe it is one of the problems that came with the servermerges? Came a few there (including some mail problems but you know that), most have been fixed now but a few might still linger. I reccomend you make a post about it in the official forum.

  • daylight01daylight01 Member Posts: 2,250

Yeah there is already a thread about it on the official forum's.

After they nerfed the gems back in the summer not much has happened to that crafting profession, and it is the least viable as it is now as the others have received good improvements. Happy to hear you are enjoying your overpowered ToS, but if you want to try melee I never grow tired of my dualwielding conqueror ;)

Crafting is getting a huge overhaul and pretty recently aoc got a new lead dev for that and he seems to be really on top of things. He's been planning an extensive overhaul of it but it seems he is dong a lot of research, taking his time and doing an incredible job of listening to the community. He has been posting like a madman on the forums and been really responding well with detailed posts that seem to be taking what the community has to heart and giving us a really good idea of what we can expect. He's also been very honest is saying that they are going to have to prioritize some unpopular things in order to make room for the changes but he has explained to us why he is doing it a certain way and it seems really convinced a lot of people that he's on the right track and will do the right thing by us. I feel lucky to have such cool dev working on it (assuming it doesn't suck in the end but listening to what he has to say and his explanations and his taking feedback to heart I really feel like this guy is going to make AoC crafting something cool and unique). I'm not into crafting but reading through his posts has actually got me a little excited to try and get into it. Plus you will be able to get certain resources by pvp as they can drop random loot of what they have which sounds like an awesome way to farm to me.  He seems to not only have a clear vision but a well thought out plan to get there and he's been checking in with the community on a lot of issues so you really should post if you have any concerns or such. Gem crafting he said is getting a serious reworking and is near the top of the priority list. You really should post or write him if you have seroius complaints as I am amazed at how well he is responding to the community.

And yea us TOS are overpowered though some classes, like bear shaman, can wreck us with their pretty long damage migation if speced right. And storm crown for the win (is a must to be fully feated at this point) though they really do need to do something about the crits. I do love the over 3k ones :D. But yea it's a little unfair. The one shot spec is useless against quite a few classes as most seem have a way to negate or reduce it and a good player can a lot of times get you in trouble for using it. Though if you have insta cast their screwed unless you don't know what thier counters look like and hit them. I throw up wrath of the serpent wring as a lot of tos's make it easy to spot and get my 66% magic damage reduction. I don't think the move would be to OP we didn't have a spell to insta cast it as I think it should be pretty hard to land if you know what your doing as throwing up four or five buffs for a spell and that has a very noticable 3 second cast time  just too easy to counter and if that's the way it goes down than you deserve to lose. I think the insta cast should be changed to maybe 20 seconds you can 1 second cast or something as I really think insta cast is what makes those huge LS unfair. Conq's have a spell that will deflect the damage entirely to you so you really gotta watch out for them because if you LS them and storm crown goes off you just killed yourself with him only casting one spell. Kinda funny really. Hox's if they can charge polymorph or another stun quickly can kill you quick enough to where you can't really do too much so it becomes who can time their stun better and makes for some really intense short duels. I could go on as I've seen some really creative strategies used against my TOS. It is an easy class to be good at but does require you to know what certain spells and such from other classes look like, how long they last and such or you are going to screw yourself. Practice pays off bit time but you'll have a blast learning that all for yourself I"m sure.

I still love my TOS but I am infatuated with my HOX for the last couple weeks. I have them both for different roles so I play on both quite a bit with no sign of boredom in sight. When your ready definitely recommend rolling a melee character as I have never enjoyed it as much in any other mmo I've played. Some advice from me is start trying out different guilds as has become a very large role for me in the game and I really enjoy the community I've become a part of. I've been in probably five before I found one I really like. Tried everthing form good, evil, raiding etc. There is a lot of diversity in how they are run and objective but I tried a mercenary guild and can't believe how much I like it. Trying out for contracts, teaming up with different guilds, and having to constantly try and outperform other guilds so we can grow our business on the server and reputation is more fun than I thought it would be. So unless you find one that you love right off the back I'd say trying a few different ones.

And sorry for the long post I haven't been able to jump on AoC for a few days due to certain circumstances and am at school getting my small fix in the forums :P. You should definitely give us an update in a while. Good luck.

Have recently come back myself. I am pleasently surprised that they have fixed all latency glitches from earlier. I also enjoy the new content stuck into the game. Here is another one; Did they change the combos? I seem to recall that they used to be longer.

  • SpellshaperSpellshaper Member UncommonPosts: 419

Yes there were changes in combo system. They are shorter and you can see (red/green colour) if you miss or not, but when you miss you lose damage or effect from combo finisher.

I had been considering coming back too. I had originally left because of the huge amount of ganking. I like PvP and I want to PvP, but it was impossible to get anything done. You couldn't progress towards higher levels because you were constantly being ganked by people who had gotten there first.

Zone in to a new agrea - ganked!

Talk to an NPC - ganked!

Get low on health fighting a mob - ganked!

Arrange to meet a pick-up group outside the dungeon - ganked!

    Try to solo - ganked!

As I said, I had been considering coming back, but threads like the one below have put me off again:

You couldn't progress towards higher levels because you were constantly being ganked by people who had gotten there first.
Zone in to a new agrea - ganked!
Talk to an NPC - ganked!
Get low on health fighting a mob - ganked!
Arrange to meet a pick-up group outside the dungeon - ganked!

Well you can go on PvE servers if you cant take the PvP.

The fact is leveling in Age of Conan is very very fast compared to any other game out on the market.

The items are not making as much impact as in any other game so level 70 can kill player that is level 80 fully equipped in epics or pvp level 5 items.

Maybe you could try to transfer your character to PvP RP servers as players there try to stick with certain polices and rules.

What you must take in consideration is that PvP levels/XP is completely different story as thats the real grind compared to PvE part of the game.

Btw when I say roll to PvE server it not offensive as with the upcoming patches players on PvE servers will have a lot of options to PvP.

Atm on PvE servers you can only PvP at:
    - Mini games
    - Siege
    - Border kingdoms. <- quite pointless atm

    Important upcoming changes.
    - PvP resources (for battle keep.. build/repair) that are only available in cimmerian end border kingdom.
Players will be there to grind the resources and also those resources will drop if you die in PvP.

    - Guild points/Siege schedule changes with War declaration
Guild will be able to declare war on other guild and you will receive points for killing members of the enemy guild. ( latest patch notes say that later on it will be enabled on PvE servers too .. not straith after the patch )

So for all those that wanna PvP at their own terms and dont wanna be disturbed while leveling etc.. PvE servers will be violable option that will have enough PvP content.

As for PvP servers its dog eat dog as it should be.

    Thaks Daylight01 for your review.

I am also thinking about coming back, i left due to lack of content from 40+ seems that has been fixed now.

I looked at my account and saw that there are free transfers available.

Not sure what server i am on, but was wondering if anyone knows what the most populated EU server is?

    PvP ofc.

    Thanks,
