That just further proves how abso-friggin-lutely useless those books are. The games still in beta, with things not yet implimented, finalised, and so forth.
I'm sure it will be a huge seller. Oh, well. The more people that can't find their way off the boat, the less dumbasses I have to deal with asking for someone to hold their hand every step of the way.
Which brings me to a pet peeve that's been jabbing at me for the last week of so, what with all the wacky beta fun. Namely, why the hell do people even play an MMO if all they're going to do is beg in general chat for someone to help them every step of the way??? What ever happened to doing a little bit of damned exploring, and figuring shit out for yourself??? I mean, jesus, every 5 seconds during the WoW beta some sad sack was spamming chat with some insipid question about what to do for quest X, when the damned answer was in the quest text, plain as day, had they actually read it. Or even better, last night. someones begging for the loccation of an NPC that gives the quest to get your next class. This person is in the tower 5 steps away from the NPC, almost crying because they can't find the guy in the tower. Had they simply turned around, and pulled their head out of their ass, they'd have found him. Hell, even after people got sick of his whining, and told him where to look, he couldn't find it. And these are the people [b]BETA TESTING YOUR GAMES!!!![]
Note to Devs: People who makes characters named Poopy are most likely not of any use to the human race as a whole, let alone as a beta tester.

Well said Anyone who buys a book about how to play a game most likely should not be playing the game in the first place. Besides that, a week after release (or sooner) there will be free spoiler sites all over the net.
Well spoken! It's called exploring...look it up! If you can't figure out where the heck to go during a quest then chances are you are not very into reading or just want someone to basically play your game for you.
I will however help on occasion in a game if there is a technical question or someone whats or needs some clarification on something.
If you think player names and constant spamming for assistance is bad....play City of Heroes and venture to Atlas Park and listen and watch in amazement.

I think I read all of my Wife's Trading Spaces books on the crapper. If there selling it at EB tomorrow...I'll pick it up...hell, at least it's some reading material until November

These books aren't that bad per say . They cover the lore , they cover the basics of most systems . Buying the collectors edition for 90$ at gamestop i get 15% off the guide so at that point wtf not buy it .
I bought it for coh (Even though ibeta tested for 4 months ) and it was nice as it explained power sets and gave locations of bad guys and some usefull starting tips .
For a person who hasn't played eq and is getting into eq2 it wont be bad. Esp if its coming out 2 months before the game. At least u got something to read !
Personally, I believe that online and offline aids that document every monster type and zone in the game (As well as items, in most cases,) take away from the scope of the game, and as such, I will never use them.
EQ2 will end up being a very diverse and beautiful world. I'd rather explore it at my own pace, and be amazed one bit at a time by the new equipment, landscapes, and creatures I come across, independant to any Strategy guide, that would really serve only to spoil the suprises in the game.
Moreover, seeing that EQ2 is not really being designed to focus on power-gaming like EQ was, I do not anticipate any of the massive "Bigger / Better" rush that EQ had. So I doubt a Strategy Guide will really be needed as much as it was in the First EQ.
Given that the DAoC Prima guide that came packaged with the box that my friend bought was full of outdated, and flat out incorrect, or missing information, I would say that they'd be the worst thing for someone new to the game, or genre.
That being said, I despise spoiler sites, and the Prima type guides. They just reinforce the behaviour of people to stupid to crack open their quest journal and read the damned instructions. Or explore an area themselves.
The amount of stupid 'Where do I find X' questions from the WoW stress test was abominable, and things aren't any better in EQ2. Might be worse in EQ2, actually. Hard to say as of yet since there are so few people. But I'm sure that once the numbers on the server start increasing, the amount of idiotic questions will increase exponentially.
At least it gives me plenty of people to be mean to.
those guides are actually pritty useful for newbs , it explains the interface , slang and all that other crap , if it comes out a month or 2 before EQ2 then i might buy it just to be able to read about the game before it comes out , if theres no open beta that is. It also usually has pritty detailed impressions of each of the classes so id want it for that too , if it comes out before the game that is...
I have used a few of those guides before, but I dont think they would be good for an ever-changing mmorpg... Who knows, may buy it for the hell of it...
I'll be buying the guide, with full realization that it will be incomplete, but I've been scrounging around for all the incomplete information I can get, so atleast this way it's all in one place.
I enjoy getting lost and exploring up to an extent, but for others it can quickly turn into frustration at early levels when you want to start having fun right away. So why not have a guide that can help you a little bit in the beginning?

Getting lost IS the fun part IMO.
I agree, I enjoy being lost, you see things that you'd never see anytime else if you had a map...but I get the feeling that we are not the majority...
People more often then not get frustrated with not being able to find npc's to buy equip/armor/weapons...
I enjoy being lost, and can't wait to get lost in game....soon...hopefully
I do so hate to be contrary but I do believe your information concerning The Prima guide is just a bit off. I have had it pre-ordered at Amazon for some time now. After I saw your post I went to check my account and it says that the estimated ship dat is Oct 12 - 20, and that is still a conservative estimate when one compares that other sites put the release date at late October. On the matter of getting the guide, I am getting it just to get a fix for my EQ2 jones. Yes, it may be useless dribble and may diminish the enjoyment of the discovery. But one must be open to all avenues of discovery.
These sort of strat guides don't tell you where to go for quests or any exact information like that.
The EQLive strat guide had information about lore, classes, spells, races, tradeskills, and more. It also had maps of the starting cities. Overall it came in handy for a quick reference tool that I enjoyed. I wouldn't say that I "needed" to have it but, I definitly didn't mind having it around!
So what do you guys tell the clerks at the game store when they try to push you into buying a strategy guide for a game you are picking up?
I usually say something to the effect of, "That's what the Internet is for." or "The Internet is free..." That sort of thing... Only rarely do I elaborate, but sometimes you get a cocky SOB who really tries to push it.
I agree someone with what you all have said. I have to say I have bought quite a few game guides in the past few years and have a stack of them rotting in a bookcase. I can't say I ever really got anything out of them. I figure the maps, which are usually better online, are the main reason I have bought them. Other than that I can't recall anything that I couldn't find on sites online.
I will believe the book is out when I SEE one. In the past, Amazon has been notorious for FAILING to have updated release/ship dates for games and guides. The last I saw at EB, I thought the guide may not be out til November. Given publishing lead time, at least it wouldnt be extraordinarily out of date when the game releases, as the date I saw was 09 Nov 2004, maybe a week before game release of the 15th. On NON-game stuff, though, Amazon is pretty good, as my charge card will verify...heh.

those books were popular back in the days of 36K modem days. Sadly, you can get a better walkthrough/info than some of those Primas.
It's almost more useless because it's mmorpg oriented. Mmorpgs can change every week or so.

I also don't believe the release date of this guide is official at all. This topic has already received much debate on the official boards.

The date that's set now, is more than likely a speculation just like the November 15 release date for the actual game. I'd wait on word.

OMG!
Thats exactly why i'm buying it. That and the times my GF makes me ride around with her.
I've always liked the Pirma guides but having one ready now while the game is still at least 2 months from release is very pre-mature.
I dont think I will be buying this one. I will wait for its revision or simply get game info online from various spoiler sites.
