The truth about SWG and how a handful of hateful people can drown out the true facts of a game and seeding tall tales and lies to be fostered on the people looking for information on this site that has a little truth to it. Most the people complaining played this game 3 or 4 years ago so I ask what do they really know but rehash the same BS over and over and most of it is not true. Try the game yourself it has a free trial.
First let’s go over the current state of the game many people call it the NGE which launched on Nov. 15th 2005 and was the biggest mistake any MMORPG company has made or will ever make again. We went from a stable environment of what was called the CU “combat upgrade” I called it a combat down grade. But just before the arrival of the NGE people where coming back to the game population I would guess was about 200k.
But by Nov. 30th 2005 easily 80% of that population had left and SOE refused to roll back even though the CEO of SOE had told us the CU was here to stay. This is where most of the anger comes, I was angry too SOE lied and they have since lost his millions of dollars and hopefully have learned a bitter lesson.
I kept hoping for a roll back to the CU or Pre-CU but it was clear after 2 years none was coming I kept testing the game when free trials came up and finally in late 2007 the game was finally playable again now I must point out I use a interface mod that emulates the Classic SWG interface from before the NGE but it works and it helps me enjoy the game. By the end of 2008 the game was once again in my eyes AAA a title again. People where coming back to my main server hangout SS or StarSider people where everywhere again and from 2007-2008 my crafters made 3 billion credits which is a lot and shows how active one vendor could be. By the way I also rate this the friendliest server also.
Now let me explain a little bit about the new SWG this game is really no longer any thing like the NGE when its bug ridden corpse that was spewed out of SOE it currently plays better than both the Pre-CU and CU. How can that be you say these folks sing the praise of the of Pre-CU time frame. Well just logon to the SWG_ _ _ and see they done a great job but I like my snappy movement I like the faster combat and I like all the new items, worlds, and instances that have been added to the game. The game has evolved from the NGE to something new and better than the CU was. I just call it SWG!
Details:
What does this game have that people would like?
1. Lets start out with wide open worlds you can travel any where its wide open! How many different planets are there lets see 12 different worlds except for parts of Kashyyyk its all wide open. You can go any where do what you want it’s still a Sandbox and it’s actually fun to play in again.
2. Ground based Quests and Space based quests they added a lot of quests since 2005 plenty of to level to 90 with so you don’t have to grind quenkers as most did in the pre-cu days. In space you goal is becoming an Ace Pilot do you to fly the X-wing or maybe the Tie interceptor is your call or maybe the Slave 1?
3. Crafting is still the best crafting system ever built and they have fixed the issues crafters had with no-decay by adding consumables. The weapons crafters are now important again and make the best weapons. Armors Smiths even with out decay make good credits because it seems everyone likes to have a variety of armor to wear and Smith made armor is still the best.
4. Heroic Instances there are six of these currently and I hope they add more. There are also seven instances on Mustafar that are also very challenging and give good rewards. These are not that easy you must be with a group that knows how to play or your dead take a trip to the cloner.
5. Harvesting resources is a mini game that all can now participate in and make credits from by selling their resources or by make your trader standout from others by having the best resources.
6. PvP is fun combat is quick and decisive now not like the old Pre-CU days when a battle between defense stackers could last I kid you not a half hour. One on one battles last just minutes or if caught off guard by a bounty hunter just seconds.
7. Graphics yes Graphics, If you have a Intel Core 2 cpu, 2 gigs of ram, and a Geforce 8800 better video card with 512 of ram you can turn your settings on high and the game looks great. Even though people complain of lag I don’t see it I’m always at the max frame rates of 30.
8. Iconic professions yes I miss the 32 professions but really my favorite ones are still there Commando “DPS”, Jedi “Hard to Kill”, Spy “Hate them”, Officer “Has all the tools”, Bounty Hunter “Forced PvP on the un-expecting which is always fun to here them whine after you collected their bounty”, Combat Medic “Always needed”, Smuggler “Very Good Now”, Entertainers “Everyone Needs”, Traders are Shipwright, Droid Engineer, Weapon Smith, Armor Smith, Tailor, Chef, Structures Makers.
Let finish by saying SWG at launch was a fantastic game it was different it was new and refreshing mistakes where made but the game in current state is fun and good shape each couple of months we see new content and more people seem to be coming back. The low population servers where able to move to more populated servers and let me say there are peeps every where now on StarSider.
I hope this brings to lights what the game is actually like so I challenge you to take the free trial and if you get addicted don’t blame me please I already have wife agro!

You really felt the need to post this twice?
Hehehe.
The game isn't buggy anymore? Really? Last July, I logged on in the Warren, watched some dudes shoot through the wall at me, and I kept randomly jumping in an out of combat. Finally I got on my speeder only to see it fly in ridiculous and not fluid directions as I attempted to turn(it would even fly backwards). Then after searching all of the cities for another living soul, I found someone and we had a duel... And I couldn't stop laughing at the cracked out jedi fight that would only fit better if Crazy Saxaphone was playing in the background.
It was at this point I decided I had seen enough and logged off.
Yeah, it's a AAA title now...
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
The game STILL has a lot of the bugs it had at launch and they aren't going away.
This game will NEVER have collision. You will always be shooting through walls. You will always see the occasional rat spawning in a rock. There will ALWAYS be rubberbanding with your speeder, etc.
The OP is simply lying to this message board. I encourage anyone who wants a good laugh to download the free trial and see what it's like to do some of the missions in this game, participate in the busted combat, or watch the particle effects.
SWG has always been one of the most buggiest MMO games on the market. The only difference is during Pre-CU there were a lot of players and there was freedom. Now you have dead servers and the same linear crap you get in every other MMO.
The OP is simply not accraute in his/her/it's assessment of this *beta*, I mean game.
What he said.
OP must be playing a different SWG besides everyone but Obraik.
Game fails on its own demerits.
It was good, now it isn't.
When more than 95% of players that have ever played a game have canceled, chances are that game ain't good.
SWG had its day, was NGE'd, and now what remains is the burnt out shell of something a lot of us once enjoyed. Most everything boosters cite as being good about SWG is a leftover from the old days, and that Pre-CU they criticize we vets for liking. Ironic.
Like others have said, go take a trial, and see the "Truth" of SWG for yourself. Don't believe anything I say.
SOE is milking the last few customers it has for cash to develop DC Universe and The Agency, and not just in SWG.
Best to skip this one.
And to the OP... wall-of-text FTL.....
I happen to agree with the oringinal poster. I returned as a paid subscriber in November and SWG is absolutely in the best state I have seen it. The statement that " SOE is milking the last few customers it has for cash to develop DC Universe and The Agency, and not just in SWG." is so wrong. Last few customers my arse there are literally people everywhere and new people joining everyday. I play on Starsider and I'd like to see another mmo (besides wow) filling up such a large world with so many players.
Whilst I don't play the game any more, I would agree with the OP, there are a lot of bitter people on this forum who won't move on and instead rattle on about the end of SWG and make out the state of the game is worse than it is.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
I always find it hard to believe when people make statements like "the game is full of people" and at the same time "new people are joining everyday". Those two statements speak against each other in some way. Either the game is full or you can visibly see new people due to lack of players.
I understand that SWG packs all the people into the same little area for such a giant game world which is why those two statements seem to make sense now.
On topic though, I don't think the original poster is entirely incorrect, but he isn't telling the entire truth either. Sure the game has some merits and yes people still carry a grudge. Yes the game is in better shape that years ago when it was flushed back to a pre-alpha state with the nge.
However the game is effectively dead and the population has dwindled to a very small base. There is no hope for an expansion other than items you have to buy with real money through a random chance system of card purchases. The game still suffers terrible lag with even a decent amount of people. There is not enough quests to level from 1 to 90 on. There are still tons of bugs that would be unnacceptable in most games released today. It is hard to look at the game now and say it is in better shape than it was. While that may be true in a technical sense, it has been years and years. For a game to get recycled so many times, lose any chance of expanding and still suffer core engine problems is being less than honest about the situation. That is like saying several years wasted to rebuild a game is a net gain over spending those same years building and expanding on a system that already worked.
There is a reason more people don't play the game. It isn't because they don't want to. Most angry people get over their angst if drastic changes turn out for the better or even near what they once had. There is nothing on the market right now that compares to what SWG had to offer (even what it currently does). Yet people choose not to play. Even when the entire mmo market has grown by tens of millions since the games release. That tells the entire story right there.
If the game was as good as the original poster claims then it would sell itself.
I think that is all the truth that is really neccessary right there.
What is truely holding this game back? A "handfull of vocal people", or the game itself?
People will make the game out to be worse than it really is but noone (like the OP you agree with) EVER makes the game out to be better than it is...
RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!
Tecmo Bowl.
AveBethos had a good point in the twin to this thread.
If the NGE is so grand, why are there no current projects to emulate it? Yes, the game is still online but so is WoW, DAOC, EQ and the like? Considering the packets are readily available, such an endeavor would be much easier than the current PreCu efforts.
Oh and as for the claim that the game is in the best shape the poster has ever seen - to me that is relative to time and place. Its like seeing a 500 pound man drop 15 pounds and saying the same thing. The statement would be true but is realtive to the person saying it and the conditions that pertain to it.
And again, another nugget in this thread that most likely won't be acknowledged. What exactly is holding this game back? Surely, it can't be the disgruntled vets. In the mmo cosmos, what makes or breaks a game is word of mouth and reputation. Pimpwars wasn't a huge corporate game nor did they spend a ton of money on advertising but word of mouth by the players and its eventual reputation brought it to it's one time heyday.
I rarely see the WoW forum have these "truth" posts. Yet despite that fact, it seems to garner a lot of subscriptions.
I play the game regularly, and while the vets who no longer play do make certain errors in fact from time to time, in that they don't keep up with whatever has been changed or added over the past few years -- they are essentially right in their assessment:
The game is still a mess of a game, more of a frankenstein experience than a real game, or a real sim. Most of the things good about it are the remnants of what was always good about it, but these remnants are a sickly, pale shadow of what was there for the experiencing before the NGE.
Coupled with that, they have continued to rip people's game experience, and destroyed people's efforts on a regular basis since the NGE, thus showing that they really never learned the lesson that the NGE should have taught.
You leave the dance with the girl you came with.
They keep changing partners every time they get a new team of DEVs.
Thus, the game can't get back it's original numbers -- people come, they hear how it was, they get screwed themselves, they leave.
Old players come back, try it for awhile, get sick of the crap, and leave.
The ones who remain stay out of habit, out of community, or they cling to the pale shadows of what once was a truly unique game experience. It doesn't hurt that there are so many games out there that provide even LESS of a sanbox/world setting; and almost none in the sci-fi setting -- and certainly none in the Star Wars setting.
Truth be told, the game is better than when the NGE launched, but still not nearly as good as it was when it was first launched. And it launched a mess. Truth be told.

The very fact that a gaming site has a forum with the title " Veteran Refuge " should be enough of an answer. It was a very messy death that SWG endured .
Well, if you liked the skill point system, the 9 iconic professions that cannot be mixed and matched is still a big disappointment.
If you want an FPS that has working collision detection, this will be a disappointment; especially when you get shot through walls by enemies that you can neither see or target.
If you want group waypoint arrows that accurately point to group members, and give accurate distances (like in team pvp), this will be a disappointment. That's been broken for over 3 years now.
If you like quest lines that are more than go to location x and gun down 10 random dudes, you're going to hate the legacy quests. They were rushed into the game around NGE time, and have been left in a very sorry state. You can complete them now, at least, but you may not want to.
If you hate falling through maps and ending up under the game, you'll hate certain parts of the wookie planet. This still happens, and the devs apparently don't know how to fix it.
If you want your crafted gear to be valued by other players and the devs, you may find this disappointing as the newest and best gear is only available by chance via random loot drops in the Trading Card Game.
If you like the StarWars story, and have any interest in continuity, this game just doesn't have it, at all.
There's nothing about this information, btw, that is not factual. Honest, current players will admit it. Others apparently don't have honesty or accuracy as a priority in their marketting.
SOE has been trying to blame all the players they burned for their horrific management of this game for years now. You can decide for yourself, I'm sure, if Smed is right, or if the hundreds of thousands of players who left the game are right.
If you take the trial, and find that any of my observations are not accurate, please feel free to let me know. I'd love it if SOE decided to treat their players with respect; I just haven't seen it yet.
P.S. Just to be clear. The problems I've listed with the game, are facts as far as I know, unless these issues have been recently corrected. It is my opinion, therefore, that this isn't a game that I would like to play or invest money into. Others may consider this kind of game acceptable. I have different standards.
The reason you see more people is because all the dead servers are being merged.....so thats why you see a few more people....new subs? I doubt it.
This if for Reklaw. I agree that the OP is entitled to his opinion--absolutely. The trouble is, he didn't state it as an opinion. His approach was to say that a small group of hateful people has been lying about this game and giving it a bad reputation undeservedly.
That's not stated as an opinion. It's stated as some kind of ultimate truth, and people who see the game differently are called hateful liars.
In this regard, the OP misrepresents his own views as objective fact (and they're not); and he misrepresents anyone who has ever had a legitimate complaint about the game.
If you gave an honest evaluation of the game, for example, I know you wouldn't take this approach. You'd state your opinion as an opinion, and wouldn't try to misrepresent people who disagree with you.
You and I agree sometimes, and disagree sometimes; but we don't go calling each other liars, or claiming that we have a monopoly on ultimate truth.
Even if it has improved, which I doubt since I tried it last summer and and sucked so hard still I uninstalled after 1 day, the fact remains that SOE screwed us all over time and time again.
SOE doesnt DESERVE our patronage. And you supporting this pile of bantha poodoo just gives merit to their bad business practices.
Ias a rare poster but a avid reader of this forum say this ...after they did it twice with little to no warning ...and then did a very similair thing to another of thier games few years later ...Why should i trust them to not do it again after i have sent 2 years worth of money?....and they learned thier lesson is not an answer ..look at EQ 1 and 2 cash shops noone wanted and were sent in anyway
Simply put i don't trust them anymore so i dont buy there products and i make sure i tell everyone i know not to as well ...this is what happens when you decieve your customer
PS this also means i buy no sony products of anytype ...so after spending thousand of dollars on playstation consoles and games they lost that money to microsoft as well
I know one truth about SWG,
The NGE is utter wank, FACT!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

The core truth of SWG now is this:
If the game was any good, more people would be playing, and they aren't
Fanbois can't escape that one.
i started playing MMOs in 2005, i went with City of HEroes after much debate... with all the negative stuff i heard about SWGm i was happy with my choice... after reading your post, i am going to download the trial now and try it out... CoH is down for somereason anyways
There is no reason for anyone to be playing this game. I don't recommend anyone try the trial, because this would be just a big waste of time.
Also, as AveBethos pointed out in another thread, if the NGE was good other companies would be borrowing ideas from it. That certainly isn't the case.
