first off let me take the wind out of everyones sails by saying i'm not smed in disguise, also i'm not his illigitimate bastard child sticking up for my evil father, nor do i work for soe....my post history should make this relatively evident.
i have been thinking of returning to eqII. i havn't played it in about 8 months and decided to see how things have changed by visiting the forums.
one of the first things that caught my eye was the posts regarding the purchasing of items for real cash. i think iv'e finally deciphered out exactly what is sold for cash and i have to say i just dont see what all the complaining is about? the biggest complaint iv'e seen so far that really seems to annoy people is that increased leveling speed through the use of available potions. it seems to me the competative vets that earned all their xp and skills from grinding are the most sensative to this issue. i'm sorry but i just dont get this way of thinking anymore?
the reality of gaming online nowadays is that there is a very wide range of people that play them...ranging in age, demographics, country, professions...etc...etc... granted one thing we all have in common is we all love the same game we choose to play. i understand this...i'm a pre-cu, bitter, swg vet. i know what its like to really enjoy a game, and iv'e played with the most competative gamers that live the game 24/7 and the most casual that log in for a couple hours a week. i fall somewhere in between closer to the very casual gamer. for myself and alot of others the reality is that theres just not much time in my busy life (mostly because of work) to log in. i would absolutelly love to be able to enjoy the game i play to its fullest...be able to get to higher levels and such and really enjoy the questing and content. unfortunatelly at the speed my real life schedule would allow this it would take me two years to even get to mid-level character.
using the potions as an example since it seems to be the most contentious issue...why is it not ok for someone like me to be able to use such a tool to help level up faster? i dont understand why this is a threat to those that have taken the time to grind out those levels? one route was free and took time...the other is expensive and is faster. the end result is both players are at the same relative character level. i dont see what difference it makes one way or the other? if it wasn't me it would be someone else anyways. what realistic advantage does this actually give anyone? from what i can tell absolutelly none.
forgive me if this sounds incitefull as its not meant to be but it seems more like an issue when mom put out a plate of cookies and all the kids bitch because jonnie took the biggest cookie. so what?
i appologize if i'm misinformed and am arguing an invalid point due to my ignorance and if this has already been discussed to death. it just boggles my mind why theres so much angst over what seem like trivial issues.
i kind of like soe's approach and implementation so far as i can tell. fluff items, pets, clothes etc have been asked for by players before. having to pay for them may or may not be the most ideal situation. maybe people are upset because they think they should get them free ingame? i dunno....i dare say that i'm not 100% against this new model. from a business standpoint, i think its a pretty good idea.
