I'd wait for Windows 7, or just roll with the beta...but if you reallyneed a new OS now, 64 bit Vista will do fine, there's pretty much no reason to get Vista 32 bit.
Been running with Vista 64bit for awhile, have had ZERO issues with it. loaded some very old games on it and they ran like a champ. Will upgrade to 7 sometime after its release but in no hurry as my OS runs just fine.
Originally posted by majinant I am running Vista 64bit and have had absolutely no problems with it. Runs all my games/programs. Only thing tho, if you gonna get a 3rd party defragger make it Auslogics. A lot of other so called 64bit defraggers steal hard drive space each time you use them which you can't get back until you format. Examples of these are: Perfect Disk, Diskepper and O&O Defrag.
Have you tried JKdefrag? its simple to use but much faster then most other defrag programs.
Ok thank you for letting me know. I wasn't really sure, and didn't want to mess anything up. Now I just gotta hope I do the whole making of the ISO disk correctly. Gonna use Active ISO Burner 1.1 it'll be a first for me, lol.
If you don't know how to burn an ISO file, don't even think about using W7 beta.
You shouldn't choose between a beta and a released OS, as you should never use a beta OS as your main OS. Stable as it might be, it still has problems, and if you loose anything, you're the only one to blame, as it is in beta.
The visual drivers (from ATI and Nvidia) are also in beta, of course, so you should expect problems! If some games don't work correctly, it's most likely to be a problem with the drivers, rather than the OS.
And finally, unlike what some people think, Vista has bene stable since 2-3 months after launch. It still has the memory leaks, and it always will have. But all software that ran on XP, runs on Vista. If it doesn't, it isn't Microsoft's fault, it's yours.
Anyway, back on topic, if you can afford the 6 gigs of ram, you should go for the 64-bit Vista (or XP). 64-bit should perform better than 32-bit, if you have enough RAM, and 6 gigs should do fine.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Vista Ultimate x64 is a great OS. Very stable and a lot of the bugs have been worked out of Vista.
But definitely look forward to Windows 7. I think it will take over once it's released. It has the performance of XP, with the look of Vista. It's kind of disappointing to think 'this is what Vista should have been', because they're not really taking that far of a leap forward. But 7 is a nice OS.

No, havn't tried that. The Auslogics one is fast tho, and is come with all the system tweaks which makes vista, as a whole, a lot faster.
I just wanted to thank everyone for the great advice! I decided to play it somewhat safe for now. I went with XP Pro 64. I am going to run with that for a bit and maybe dive into the Vista 64 arena a little while down the road. I want to see how Windows 7 is going to play out and if Vista is merely going to fall to the wayside so to speak. I am not to concerned with the limited Direct x 10 shit out there as I don't play any games that utilize the technology. It will be something to think about at a later time when the game world really catches up.
I just wanted something stable, familiar and reliable. XP has always been that for me so I just decided to go with the 64 bit version. Installed fine, drivers took me a little bit but only because they were scattered around the internet. After finding everything it is running great and I am happy with my decision. Thanks again everyone!
As for the Wondows 7 beta and those people who are thinking about running it, I have to agree with some of the other posters. If you do not know how to burn an iso or do other fairly minor computer things you are just going to have problem after problem. Running a beta OS requires a considerable amount of technical know-how. DO NOT use it as your main OS if you do not have this sort of knowledge. You will just be reinstalling your old XP or Vista install in a day or two anyway.

You should get vista 64 bit then, because Windows XP 64 bit is based off of windows server 2003 and is probably even worse then windows 2000.
Known issues There are some common issues that arise with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Driver compatibility; Only 64-bit kernel mode drivers are supported. This means that devices for which there are no 64-bit Windows XP drivers available cannot be used. This includes a lot of common hardware. Any 32-bit Windows Explorer extension fails to work with 64-bit Windows Explorer. Explorer is a 64-bit program, so it cannot load a 32-bit DLL. However, Windows XP x64 Edition also ships with the 32-bit explorer.exe, which can be used as the user's default shell with a registry change. Most 16-bit programs will not run (32-bit software with 16-bit installers based on ACME Setup versions 2.6, 3.0, 3.01, and 3.1 and InstallShield versions 5.x will run correctly) Command prompts will not load in full-screen. This is also true of Windows Vista in both 32 and 64 bit editions. Does not contain a Web Extender Client component for Web Folders (WebDAV). Some installers refuse to install to anything other than 32-bit XP, even though the product runs perfectly on x64.

I've been running Vista Ultimate x64 for over a year now. It's stable as a rock and runs anything I toss at it. The only BSOD I've had was due to Creatives soddy X-fi drivers, but that has been corrected since then.
I consider Windows 7 Vista SP2.2, as Vista's own SP2 will also focus alot on performance.
Both will be fine OS'es, Windows 7 will build on the Vista driver model, so there will be less issues with poor drivers at it's release.
But I'll not be switching unless work gives me a retail key once Win7 gets released. Vista is fine for this machine here
I just have Home Premium 32bit. I was thinking of upgrading to Ultimate 64bit but then I decided to wait for Windows 7. I also decided to not buy new computer parts until the release of windows 7. By then the prices will be down and new hardware will be released..im pumped for it
I've never had any problems with Vista 64. I really don't know why people hate it so much. Yes, its annoying to click 2 confirm buttons for every action, but that's my only complaint.
I have been running x64 sence xp and server went x64. I am running Vista x64 here at home.
I have Win7 on another HDD and boot it for testing and want not, here at home it is incredable, reminds me of the last release canidate of vista b4 retail went to $hit.
At work, we have it (Win7) running on x86 (32-bit) and x64 bit workstations and laptops.
We have had only minor compatability issues there, and it is with poorly written software or dated mostly.
I brought my RIG in from home for some hard core benching and testing in my lab area (im a network lan/wan and other crap) and me and the guys beat the crap out of it in Vista x64 and Win7...
Every app, every game, VM you name it, ran faster, better, and in most cases looked even better, dx9 games up, did not do much for dx8 games.... but they did still preform better.
The OS (win7) system footprint was much more pleasing, leaving alot more resorces for apps and games... AutoCad (wich loves x64 and ram) was extreemly impressive.
All in all, Vista X64 if you can, XPx64 if dx10 is not an issue ( rock solid there). and if they dont mess it up by retail like vista, Win7 ftw!
As for drivers, even the crapiest workstation we through at Win 7, even if Win7 did not have the driver for it, the vista driver worked just fine. In most cases, Games and system apps detected Win 7 as vista...

You can fix that easy, as most know or some one has told them. You do not have to enable the Administrator account, and should not for most home use, lol...
In the Control Pannel- under user accounts select 'Turn User Account Control on or off.
and turn it off and reboot.
This is safe if you are, it is mostly for basic end users, like idiot lights on the dashbord of a car.

Windows Vista x64 is what I currently use for my games, It runs nice, smooth, and fine. Enabled Administrator account so no damn UAC. Everything runs fine. Beta tested Windows 7, interface was nice, but my networking controller was not supported and several games did not run correctly or didn't work at all -_-. Heres exactly what microsoft is doing, More than likely vista will be the next XP and 7 will be the next Vista. We all remember how crappy vista was before right? No games supported, so many compatibility issues, and now look, Vista runs almost any game fine now, has barely any software issues now. While Windows 7 is going to have almost the same exact thing, new OS, new look, but compatibility issues, driver issues, and others.
All I can say is, stick/go with vista for now, and don't bother to buy 7 until it gets alot more applications supported, along with hardware.
Windows 7 runs games pretty well so far. I was playing a DDO trial in DX10 getting good framerates havent dropped below 40 on max settings and x4 AA. When It comes out im going to buy another 4 gigs of ram, it runs well with 4 and a e8400 and an ATI 4850. Might start up LOTRO again just to see how the DX10 looks in person. DDO looked amazing.
