swapping (dual core) for a (core 2)..can i do it

cvettecvette Member UncommonPosts: 82

I have an Inspiron 9300 notebook with a dual core 1.86. I want to upgrade it to a core 2 duo.

I know the bus speed is different but the mobo should take of that i assume. They are the same socket and i am very familiar with replacing cpu in notebooks. I just dont know if the bios will accept it.

Thanks for the help

Nope, can't do it.  The physical connections for the two cpus are completely different.

even though they are both socket 775 ?

I looked online at some pics, looks like the core 2 has a little indent on each side and the dual core doesnt.I didnt spent much time looking at pics but i guess even though they are socket 775 there are different types of socket 775.

even though you have the same socket, you can end up having different pins under the core 2. its similar to an issue a friend had when upgrading from a x2 chip to a phenom. though they were both AM2 sockets, the pins were different. not to mention its a waste of a cpu and you can encounter compatibility/stability issues with the memory and cpu timings due to the difference in the FSB multiplier given the FSB memory controller is set to a different speed compared to the Core 2. I wouldnt risk it. thirdly which is equally important the BIOS has to be updated to support the Core 2 properly for that specific set up. manufacturers do it at times, such as Mobo manufacturers, but highly unlikely that dell will do the same given its a prefab specifically geared toward a type of use and not intended to replace/upgrade specific parts.
