I've been through alot of MMO's (none of them good enough to hold my interest past 3 months) so obviously the past year I have been reading up on pretty much every big MMO that is coming out. Last christmas, I had been SO excited about EverQuest II. It must have been even more than a year, i read up on this game before it was very popular. Once i saw some screenshots and features that was it, i felt like I had to have it.
The only problem was the system specs were pretty intimidating. I felt the only way i would have been able to play this game, would be to spend around 400 bucks just to upgrade my PC.
Before i would go bankrupt over that, i thought that i would check out what other mmo's were coming out. Half of them were cancelled, a quarter were crappy MMO's ripped off of movies to gather fans, and only 2 MMO's remained. World of Warcraft and Dark and Light.
World of Warcraft, luckily i was able to play the stress test instead of guessing wether this game would be good or not. As stable and polished as this game was, i know in the back of my mind this game will lose it's interest in oh, say 3 and a half months. You make a character, get his level high, and start over again.
Dark and Light. Well, this had a nice idea. But again, i feel that there will not be enough content to last me a few years.
1 year later, here I am again. Back at EverQuest II. This is the last MMO that remains for me. My only hope to grasp onto the MMO genre, which once peaked my interest 2 years ago. It's content and expansion packs should be able for me to cling onto this game for years like the original EverQuest did for people.
It will take a huge wad of cash out of my wallet, it will leave me broke for about half a year, but this is what it comes down to for me.
Well, that pretty much sums up my life over the past year. I tried to make it short.
What i'm basically trying to say about this whole thing is, Comon' EverQuest II, don't screw this one up!

actually you were w WoW fanboy first..then came to the good side
then left the good side
then came back
maybe you're not to be trusted, lol
bah, 400 isn't that much!
I'm probably not even going to upgrade any more than I have! I was planning on buying a 3400 64 and a msi motherboard..maybe a 6800 Gt..thing is, in december that would come to around 600 bucks
I don't really know people in person that game with me on the pc..most of them are on xbox live,
so I'm taking that 600 bucks and redoing the back room..turning it into my room, moving my computer there, buying a 32 inch, an xbox (i sold mine) and xbox live
getting internet back there (splicing the cable that was installed, and trailing it underground, running 2 cat 5's back to the house for my bro's)
and I'll have myself a place to have even more fun! and still be able to play eqii!
the fact that nothing can play it on highest right now defeats my reasons to upgrade, I can play it..sure
upgrading it..i can play it..sure
so why not wait till parts are out so good...good enough to play it on the highest, THEN upgrading
till then I'm spending my money for some in school, at home, xbox live bondage, lol

computer store down the street from my house. i already picked out what i want, just have to wait for my tax returns wont be able to play at launch obviously, gonna have to wait until feb/or march. the place is called computer factory. http://www.compfact.com not sure if they deliver but the website is on thier brochure, i got from them to choose what i wanted. comes to about $856+tax, but im going to add a few things extra like sound card, some sub woofers, etc. but it wont go over 1k
NEVER buy from the computer store down the street!
you can get a 64 bit processor instead of that 3100 for most likely a CHEAPER price

im not buying anything online if thats what you mean, i am building it myself, but i want the parts all at one time, from a place i have purchased parts/software previously and which i trust for quality. im not going to purchase from a website (which i usually do not trust) especially anything like ebay, etc (i know you didnt mention that) but, it pertains to most online businesses. it might save me a few bucks to buy online but i really like to go with what i know. the point is i will have more to spend on it than im going to use, just need something more up to speed than what i have, not looking to buy the best on the market. thanks for the info though, but its not my style.
When i read upgrade for $400 i thought wow is that all!?
Lets just say i know someone that knows someone whos friend of a friend has this PC who *could* be in the Beta:
P4 2.6Ghz
512MB DDRAM
80GB HD 5400rpm
GeForce 5900XT
- it lags out big time.
I will be building my own PC with:
AMD Athlon 64 FX-53
1GB DDRAM PC3200 dual channel CL2
74GB HD 10,000rpm
GeForce 6800Ultra
- hope it doesnt lag
I *might* get 2GB RAM. He said 512MB RAM is the extreme minimul for EQ2, as in it is good enough for solo play, ie no other characters in the same zone.
If yer "friend" is lagging out with that system I dunno what he's doign wrong, maybe trying to play with all settings maxed or very high.
I have 2 systems I play on:
AMD 1800+
1024 pc2700 ram
nVidia GeForce Ti 4200 (128mb)
40GB 7200rpm
and:
AMD 64 3400+
2GB Kingston HyperX Low Latency pc3200 ram
2x 160gb 7200rpm in Raid-0
nVidia 5500 FX (256mb) {Soon to be replaced by a 6800 Ultra}
Because of the video card in my new system the old one actually gets better benchmarks and out performs it. The 5500 FX is one HELL of a bottleneck in that system. But I don't have a problem playing on either system, at reasonable settings, generally "Balanced" or Medium.

EDIT: on both of them that is, so i can compare a little. i dont want to have to run low settings but i will if i have to.
I've never had the FPS counter thing on if there is one, so can't really say. I'll look around and see if I can find the option for it or whatever. But trust me if it weren't decent FPSs I wouldn't be playing at those settings, I'd rather run smoothly on lower details than bump the eye candy for a loss in performance.

I went outside once... It was a wednesday.
Yeah but the problem with a 3rd party program like that is it's using up system resources itself in the background, therefore lowing your FPSs I'm sure.

Running any other program will use some of your system resources, but really not a lot for a program like that. Not really going to do much good though either.
I most likely will play EQ2 also. WoW is just too casual for me it looks like and I am tired of fighting with those who want to be level 60 with all the best equipment 3 months after release and investing 30 minutes a day to get there =/ .
I sure hope it requires a heavier investment to max out EQ2. I dislike SOE but if there game is good I will play it.
I guess I will have to step up and get a new system. Currently I have only a p4 1700, 512 mb pc800 ram, and a radeon 9600se card.
