Everquest II Trial Experience

zenaphexzenaphex Member Posts: 73

I have been playing EQ2 for the past couple of days and it's not a bad game. I had tried it a while back before this when the whole Faye trial was in place. I decided to give it another shot rcently and now the trial allows me to try out all the races and classes for 14-days. I guess this is something that has changed since then? Anyways, on with my experience.

Trial Download

I'm on a 6Mbit connection and this game took several hours to download. I have sympathy for those on slower connections. I did notice that I was prompted if I wanted to install extended content or something to that nature. I chose to do so. Maybe this is why it took so god awful long.

Starting Out

I was excited to see all the races and classes available. I started a Half-elf Druid Fury to have some kind of even grounds for soloing and experiencing things on my own before trying out groups. I advanced fairly quickly on my own through the good side up to the point where I was somewhere around level 10 in Baubbleshire. The Ruins quests is where quests started getting a little more confusing for me.

My First Group and Friend

I had advanced far enough through The Caves quests and was just about finished up. There were some quests I needed assistance with such as destroying the Behemouth rock so I could blast my Ray Gun at its remains and venturing around a little further to try on the harder mobs. This is where I met a Wizard who I soon grouped with and bcame good friends with through our adventures. My attacks felt pretty weak compared to his but I was able to support our group as a healer and mob manager. I'm still puzzled how he his magic attacks could be so powerful being 3 levels below me but maybe that's the nature of WIzards.

Onward We Go

We finished our Caves questing and ran out of quests to follow. This is the one thing that sort of annoyed me. We had no idea where to continue as if there is possibly a main quest to follow. So, we followed on some side quest I found from the Caves and journeyed onward to Antonica. Well, that turned out to be a waste of time because that quest had me running places because I was completely lost. We decided to look for quests our level in Antonica but found ourselves running around a bit. Bit of an annoyance.

Questing

If there was one thing I would suggest up-front with EQ2, that would be to improve the instructions given with quests. A quest could tell you a zone to go to, but would not tell you where within the zone. I know we need to figure things out for ourselves but sheesh. I want to get moving on, damnit.

Mission Impossible

I ran into my first quest that was broken. I researched the forums to see what the deal was. Sure enough, that quest was indeed broken. What's even better is that this quest was reported broken since 2007! Wow. That sort of makes me wonder about the quality of the game. Anyways, I threw that qeuest away. By the time it is fixed, I will be +10 levels ahead. I reported the broken quest as a bug via the bug reporter so hopefully it will get looked into.

Character Advancement

This was somehwat confusing for me. I did a bit of reasearching on the forums for my class as a solo. Hopefully I got things tuned well enough. I still believe my attacks are rather weak for my level comparing it to a Wizard but maybe I am just expecting too much. I also need to work on power regeneration cause when I get into tight binds or I am within a party, that power will get soaked up rather quickly.

Community

Where is everyone? I rarely ever see a group of fellow players anywhere I have been. The most I have seen have been in the starting area. I think it would be cool to see large groups of people hanging out in like a lobby area. Something to show the community is alive.

Overall

EQ2 is a decent game. I could see myself playing this for free. And JUST maybe,  I would pay to play it but still not sure on that. Compared to other MMOGs, I didn't feel like I was grinding so much. I also didn't have to travel across the universe to complete a quest. Otherwise, I would have dropped that game rather quickly. Now to get past the frustration of figuring out what to do next and figuring out my character spec as a whole.

Tips Please

If any of you have tips for a Level 18 Half-Elf Fury Druid, I would appreciate it. I have 3 points on Enhanced Swarm and I think 2 points in my Twirl so far. I haven't got the animal form spec, yet. I've spec'd my trait and other enhancements already. I'm a level 20 outfitter crafter with a 1-handed sword and buckler. My general attack order is: Root, Heroic Oppurtunity, Swarm, Twirl, <Repeat>.  Any tips against magic mobs will be nice too.

Nice and balanced review. Makes a nice change :)

If you want to do more damage, then reroll. Fury is a healer class, and in comparison with damage classes, it will never be their equal. Not by a long shot. Of course, the damage dealing classes don't offer much in the way of healing, so it's all apples and pears.

Could you tell me the name of the broken quest please? Often people misunderstand the quest and declare it as broken. I didn't think there were any broken quests left, so I'm curious.

The fact that you don't often see anyone could be down to three major reasons: You're on a 'dead' server, experienced players get xp bonuses for every lvl 80 they have (up to 5), so don't spend much time in your level range, or it could be because not many people level up in the older zones. The popular choices now are Timorous Deep (Gorowyn), Greater Faydark (Kelethin), and Darklight Wood (Neriak). These areas give better quest rewards, are easier to navigate, and give out more AA points.

You can find an absolute bucketload of information on the different ways to spec a Fury on the official forum.

Thanks, darwa. Glad I could be of change. :)

Understandable. I will keep at it with my druid fury and see how things move along.

The quest is "Building Fawn's Garden". I've linked the quest for you here.

The items they mention in the link to gather is old. There are new items now. I managed to get two of the threee quest items. The third one says to get sand from the Sand Covered Crabs. When I looked up the crabs for Antonica, I found the location for them. I killed several donzen of them but no sand whatsoever came off them. People have reported having the same issue getting the sand.

Hmm. I could have picked a dead server by luck. Eventually I'll make it to one of these areas to see some more folks. Thanks for the information. I find the forums to be a huge mish-mash of information that isn't neatly organized, but I will continue to look through it some more. Deciphering what some of these people says can sometimes be confusing. Appreciate it much.

They have different directions over at EQ2 Wikia. The site is kept updated and is possibly the best source of raw EQ2 info available.  I'll take a run over right now and have a look at it for you

There is a difference between a wizard (Strictly Damage dealer) and a Fury(Healer with some damage support). Furies solo very well. While you won' t get a lot of damage spells what you do get does decent damage. But your primary Role is a healer. and you get great heals.

One of the quest givers int he caves should have given you a quest to see Mittzy Rollingpin( Might not be spelled correctly) in Antonica. She is located at the cabin off the road from North Qeynos. There will be a few quests available quests there, and a couple will lead you into Stormhold,( A contested Dungeon). If you also explore the zone you will find quests and most buildings there. Gnoll slayer Keep, Ardent Needle and Oracle tower, along with inside the village there.

For help on quests you can download and install EQ2 map updater which will have most of the spots needed for quests marked off. You can also look at Alaakhazam, or EQ2wiwki.com for info.

Your attacks will never match that of a wizard or for that matter any DPS class. But fear not. You still have a great class to play. If you work down the Strength line under the druid tree you will be able to pick up a couple of melee attacks along with attack speed for short periods of time. Also under the Fury tree there is a branch that you can go for what is called "Animal Form" which will increase your melee combat by 100% for 1 min, but stiffles all your other spells. While in that form if your power is low it will replenish it fast.

Also your main attributes you need are Inteligence  and Wisdom. Int. increases your spell damage, and Wisdom id your power pool and resistance to spells. Having Strentgh and stanima is also important but to a lesser degree.

Well most players are either high level or running alts. leveling at a faster pace than you. Most people are in guilds and when not adventuring are hanging out in the guild halls. How ever if decide to subscribe, you will be able to chat in level chats and find it really is not to hard most times to find a group,(Yes there will be times when you will not be able to find one ). Being that your on a trial, you will not be able to communicate with most players via chat channels. But they are there.

Also depending on what time you play and what server there may not be as many on than at other times of the day.

I'm glad you feel the game is decent. I know I enjoy it. I have been there for a long time, and still find something new all the time.

There are a lot of quests and different styles that can be done, We have your normal quests like oyu have been doing. There are also , Heritage quests, Signature, quests, Racial quest lines, Armor Quest lines, etc. Besides just harvesting and crafting there are also Tradeskill and harvest quest lines you can do, that offer nice rewards.

For your class, you should get Mastercrafted leather Armor and mastercrated weapons,I use a one handed sword and buckler shield, Shop at the broker for your spell upgrades. Also Look at the tips I mentioned above.

      I hope this helps you.

Good luck and most of all, have fun

Follow the guide I linked and you'll get the quest done - it's not broken, but not every crab gives an update.

I agree  - I completed that quest a year ago.  its not broken

  • NoktarisNoktaris Member Posts: 270

Not sure if that particular quest is broke or not...but I've done hundreds of quests on multiple characters up to 80 and I've not encountered any broken quests. I'm sure there is a few in the game. But there is very few...so don't let finding one broken quest discourage you.  :)

I just did the quest, and it's definitely not broken.

Sorry, I thought I'd been clear enough.

I checked out that link and it sounds exactly like the crabs I killed on the southern shore nearby where I found the pike fish to get the eyes. None of those crabs gave me sand. I'm not sure if the locations are the same but I will check this when I get online tonight.

  • toxziktoxzik Member UncommonPosts: 41

yeah i've finished that quest too. EQ2Wiki should have the right coords for ya. Like someone said, i dont think i've ever encountered a broken quest in EQ2.

  • zenaphexzenaphex Member Posts: 73

I visited the wiki link and confirmed the location of the crabs. They are the exact same ones I've tried before with no luck. I tried then again to be sure since a new EQ2 update was posted but still no luck. I would doubt it being some kind of trial limitation but anything is possible. I was thinking that maybe it's the order that acquire the items. I got the seeds first, then tried the crabs. But since the crabs didn't work, I went for the fish eyes. Still, the crabs don't work. In any other case, I have reported this as a bug.

    Any luck with the crabs?

When you kill them do you get a message "You did not find any quest items" or something along those lines? If you get that message then you know you have the right mob.

Hey Holly. Unfortunately, no luck with the crabs. I tried them again and got nothing. No blue message indicating that it has no quest item or anything like that. Just duds. When I looked up those crabs, that was the only location I could find - the south shore crabs. Do they exist in more than one location? Cause the location I was provided earlier in the thread linking to a wiki was the location I tried.

    I find this very strange.

Not only did I have no trouble with this using one of my regular toons, but I also created a new toon and got a friend to do the same out of curiosity. All three times, we were able to complete the quest as described in the link I provided with no troubles.

I really don't understand why you're having trouble assuming you are following those directions correctly.

My recommendation is to simply chalk it down to 'gremlins' and move on

Let me verify just to be sure. We're speaking of the shore next to the Great Oak Tree and has that one character named Yuri standing on the shore along with all the sand covered crabs, right?

Sounds  right. I verified they were updating moments ago (22:17 GMT 6th February 2009) on Antonia Bayle server.

Here is the location on the map:

And here is what they look like:

  • zenaphexzenaphex Member Posts: 73

Yep. Those are spot on. Here's what I will do for testing purposes. I am going to try a few things this evening when I get on. First, I'll attempt it again just for the heck of it. Second, I will drop the quest and attempt it again in the same order I attempted it the first time. If that doesn't work, then I will drop the quest again and go directly for the crabs. If that doesn't work, then I will give it up and just leave the sand covered crabs in peace.

I've already moved along a long time ago so it's not like I'm letting this one quest stop me. I'm already up to level 22. Yep. That means I've decided to subscribe to EQ2.

  • HollyWeberHollyWeber Member UncommonPosts: 43

    Yay! Welcome to EQ2!

By the way, what server are you playing on? Maybe it's a server fluke? Hrm... I could try on my server.

    It's a mystery!

  • zenaphexzenaphex Member Posts: 73

I'm on the Runnyeye server. It's not as disgusting as it sounds

  • zenaphexzenaphex Member Posts: 73

The crabs have finally given in and given me the sand! Two possibilities here. One, my paid subscription has somehow magically fixed the issue. Or two, the recent update (which just downloaded) fixed the problem. So weird.

Can't be the latter cause I just checked the patch notes and the notes do not mention anything about the quest.

    Yay!

When I logged in my guy to move him from the crabs, I could hear little chitters of "We're safe again" but I couldn't figure out where from. It couldn't have been the crabs, right?

Good to hear that you've decided to subscribe - I hope you get as much out of the game as I have over the years (and continue to do so).

How are things on Runnyeye nowadays? Being a Brit, that and Splitpaw 'ought' to be the server(s) that I play on. I remember giving Runnyeye a go many moons ago, but can't remember why I stopped. I should take advantage of the fact that the character slots on US servers don't count for the International ones, and give it another go.

  • zenaphexzenaphex Member Posts: 73

And I thought I was just hearing things...must be the voices of the restless crabs. Things seem pretty well on the Runnyeye server. I've ran into a few others in my adventures offering each others help in questing/support. Otherwise just having some good ole casual fun.
