My friend is a surgeon and he did only become an Australian citizen about a week ago, hehe, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt regarding not being particularly bright.  I think sooner or later this will happen in a lot of countries as it's mainly being billed as a child protection measure.  I can't see free for all internet lasting forever.

Travelled around the world for years in my youth and no-where else i'd rather call home than Australia and yes its not perfect. You should do yourself a favour and think before you speak as you jare ust confirming how foolish you really are.

Though I would have worded it a bit differently than goneglockin (and a bit ashamed to be called a fellow American in that instance), suppression of information of any kind is nothing other then a form of dictation which can only lead down the pathway of tyranny.  I hope the Australlian people will fight this restriction as it only serves to control information and ideas.  Yes it's only video games now, but... what's next?  All it takes is one law like that to set up a domino effect for the next one, and the ones following.

The Australlian people have my support, fight (with peaceful protesting of course) for your rights.  Tell your Government that you won't be dictated as to what you can or can't do!

I'd say every government in the world suppresses information as well as spreads disinformation. They amount of money they ALL spend on spin doctors is frankly appalling especially for so called democratic countries. Thou its not just governments but the media (look at FOX news).

I used to work analysing news in the UK and its disturbing how national newspapers report on events according to what political preferences the editors have. Then you get the media moguls like Rupert Murdoch who have way to much power to distort fiction as fact for my liking.

And i cant see the internet filters passing as floppyface stated. I bet parts of the UK and US governments have contemplated censoring the internet before. Aint gonna happen.

News media is no longer the objective form of reporting anything.  Corruption whether it's monetarily or politically inclined, is alas seeded within the minds of the CEO's and VPs of their respective news/media organization.  Which goes to prove that the truth usually lies between the lines on how it's perceived.

I can't really say I know a lot about Australia, but it seems in concern with media and entertainment they've gotten rather conservative over the last decade.
Or perhaps it always was but now it's just more apparent considering the type of media out there.
Regardless, why don't they do the West Hemisphere thing and tax the crap out of'em?

I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.

Actually its the conspiracy theorists nuts that scare me the most. Mostly cause they seem to think gun collecting should be an Olympic sport lol.

My brothers father-in-law belongs to some conspiracy organisation that believes some secret sect controls the world economy, the moon landings were a fake and various other fictions. I love getting into debates with him and he hardly ever gives rational answers but i always come away thinking at least for once i'm not the craziest person to leave a room.

Yeah those are what are called "Active" Conspiracies.  They are usually false and are usually used to hide the ugly "passive" conspiracies and truths that are right in our face but most seem to forget.  Such as civil right violations, global warming, global economic crisis, poverty and starvation, and corruption of polictics by our elected officials.

It's funny to see real life problems ignored by the public who consume books on UFO abductions and Stantanic lizard people cults.  We humans are funny people.

Right. And in the USA the country goes into meltdown if a woman shows her nipples on free to air television. Can you even say the f and c words or show full frontal nudity on free to air TV in the USA? You can in Australia. So spare me "Australia is a police state rubbish".

well about the nipples and swearing on tv it pretty much comes down to morales which for the most part the US has in spades over any european country : P (yes im counting australia as a european country cuz it was once under the control of great britian and was settled by english prisoners unless im wrong someone correct me and yes ive been outside the US multiple times including a few trips over the pond). it doesnt suprise me that they are doing this they are just trying to enforce their law and make a little extra money its just done differently over there thats all

Don't let your impressions of Americans be of him, we don't have morals in spades over the EU as he puts it.  We have a society that is sexually repressive based on puritan culture traditionally handed down from generation to generation.

My fellow American's I would advise you not to make such ignorant statements against EU as they have been through a lot more then we have as a civiliasation that is much older then us.  We are still "the young punks" in the block so to speak let's show our Western Civilised "older borthers" the respect they deserve.

Back on topic. I cant see why anyone would fuss about this seeing as you can download most games now directly from publishers or 3rd part sites. I know i do as its cheaper especially as i am an Australian resident.

Yes that's what I mean, WW1 and WW2, amoung many other countless wars throughout we should be more humble in that we did not have that happen in our backyard.  Also, there's a study done that sexual repression in a society is linked to higher ratio of rape in that society.  Of which there are many studies done, some say we have one of the highest ratios of that crime in the world.  It may be something wrong w/ this puritan repression as the study seems to suggest.  Anyways a bit of topic here.  And I'll end it with that.

great, first i have to wait 4 months to get the LOTRO expansion and now it could (possibly) be delayed even more.

oh well one of my local retailers (in typical Aussie fashion) ignores many laws and distributes plenty of games that would otherwise be hard to get.  I'm sure if it came to it some under the counter deals would be acceptable.  Still knowing the AFP (Australian Federal Police) they wont give a toss and never fine anyone.

Actually there is a law in the UK that goes something like this. In some county you are allowed to shoot a Welshman with a longbow if they trespass on the church grounds on a Sunday. Of course since the law was passed over a hundred years ago i doubt a modern court would uphold it.

Because FOX is so much worse then CNN and MSNBC amiright?

I dont think all information should be made acessible. I think each govt should have secrets(they all do) and if they are to be leaked or need to be covered up then they should. Now this imo should be more with places like the CIA and FBI where names could be involoved and the names shouldnt get out. Not if the govt blew up something and tried to hide that.

Please I doubt they have even a tenth of the pointless laws the US has. Heck there are even books that have a lot of them(mostly just dont get rid of old ones), they are never upheld.

Bureaucracy gone mad!  One small state, representing  only a fraction of the English speaking market, wants to add its own layer of bureaucracy and charges.

    No great loss.

    •  You will pay half as much by downloading.
    • The retail shops in Australia often have old stock that is so outdated, you end up downloading the whole game in the patching process. So retail edition does not mean smaller downloads.

Actually my Australian friend came to visit over xmas and mentioned it and also I read this:  news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7689964.stm

I don't where you get your info from but it looks like they are moving in this direction.

They can move all they want. They will never get the legislation through the Senate. The Coalition (National and Liberal Parties) plus the Greens and the independent senator have said they will not pass any legislation about internet filtering as is.

The only way the Australia Labor Party will ever get internet filtering through is if they have a double dissolution trigger and call a double dissolution election and there is no way in hell will a Government go to the polls with internet filtering as their main policy.

Basically there is no chance in hell that the internet filtering as proposed by the ALP will go through both houses of parliament.

I get my information by living in Australia and having a BA with a major in Pol Sci. Your friend probably doesn't know what he's talking about. Australians aren't a particularly bright bunch.

    Case closed.

In Austin Texas it's legal to shoot an Indian if he's on the state capital grounds  but I doubt a court would uphold that as a justification for murder hehe.

Anyways, people that think games warp kids' minds are stupid.  Anyone that goes out and kills someone because they played Doom or something was already messed up in the head.  There is no point to all this ratings and censorship of games, it's just a way to get money, like speeding tickets.  I've been arrested before for doing 146 mph in a 70 and got 30 days and 6 month liscense revocation and I've never once been in a wreck...Just another way to make money...that's all just about any law is now days. Not paying attention causes wrecks, not speeding.  Just as People already with a couple of screws loose cause violence, not video games.

No. I was born here and lived here everyday of my life here (except for when overseas on holidays).

Parents were born here, grandparents, great grandparents etc.

Oh, and I checked JB Hi Fi again today during my lunch and Age of Conan, Warhammer, World of Warcraft etc were still for sale on the shelves. Hell, they even had Dungeons & Dragons and Vanguard for sale too.
