Is TR f2p now?

kingtommyboykingtommyboy Member Posts: 543

Hi,

A while ago I found out that TR will go offline

On the TR website I read now nothing about the shutdown, only that the game is now f2p

Will it stay online and f2p in the same way like ubi did with shadowbane?

Or are they just making the game f2p so people can enjoy the last moments on it?

I believe it is f2p until Feb sometime.

It's interesting that they just released Development 16 to the test server.  It seems like if you are going to shut the game down, why bother?  I suspect it's a case of dedicated developers taking care of their "baby".

No. There is no client fee, or monthly fee right now.

They say the game is closing on the 28th, but how they have been treating things (talks of a server merge days before the supposed end of the game, etc) I'm really thinking they want to move it all to one server and are basically testing what they could possibly do with the remaining players. They don't really want to get anyone's hopes up, but if things go well, they may keep it up on one server. At least thats what I think. If that's not the case, kinda stinks either way. This game definately had a rough launch, but got better over the months. If they did plan on keeping it up, I would say it has some good amounts of players have been showing up since this got free to play.

All that tells me is the game was not worth paying for, as the amount of people they had paying for subscriptions at the time of their cancellation announcement proved.

I don't know why they kept rolling out deployments after announcing that the game was closing. My guess has always been that some of the employees had some kind of layoff clause in their contracts, along the lines of a month's notice before termination. So if they announce the game is closing in 6 weeks, they still might have a bunch of people sitting around getting paid for 4 of them. Just a guess though.

It's the server merge that confused me most. Sure those are valuable resources, but why bother doing it with only 3 weeks left before closing altogether. Those merges are a big headache.

But I still don't think the game has a chance at survival. You have to remember 2 things. First that the game cost so much more to develop than it ever should have. NCSoft isn't getting that back with a F2P game running on a single server. Not in a year, not in 10 years. For tax reasons they're better off shutting it down. Second, that NCSoft is an enormous corporation that doesn't have any need to go fooling around with converting games from monthly fee to item shop. We forget that in the west, where they look like they're in the same league as, say, Turbine and Mythic. But internationally they're in Blizzard's league (they just need more than one game to get there).

I'll be curious to see what happens at the end of the month; but I don't think any TR fans should be hopeful.

I guess it's possible they might be hoping to sell the game off to someone cheap. They could even make it a turn key solution, providing a server and account management for a fee.

In any event, I guess I better install from that  98 cent copy I got from Amazon and try to get a week of play out of it. :)
