Neocron 2?

Hey, I know this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd bring it back to light to see if anything new has arisen... Someone here recommended I check out Neocron, as a good alternative to HG:L and TR. I tried to sign up for the trial but their Paypal certificate is fried. Also, Click2Pay, their other financial operator, seems to think my IP Address is outside of the US and won't let  me sign up. ( I live in the Midwest, right smack dab in the middle of the US. -.- ) Anyways, does anyone know of any new info on this? I tried contacting Neocron's devs and Click2Pay but haven't got any response.

And to keep this on topic, could someone please elaborate on how the PSI Powers work in Neocron? Seems like their version of magic, but I can't find any good examples. Thanks in advance.

  • I can't help with the billing problem as I did not experience that problem.  But I think if you google around you can find some forums for it.  There was also a website that had a Psi Power and equipment DB.  And there is a Chracter Builder app around somwhere.

Neocron is a very low pop game and is pretty old with basically a Deus Ex interface and about that level of graphics.  But its definitely worth messing around in.  It offers stuff that niether HGL or TR do/did.  For example it has vehicles you can drive or fly or ride in.

The PSI powers are essentially the "magic" of Neocron.  Neocron is a sort of skill/class hybrid.  It has no classes.  Instead there are four "races" (genetically altered humans).  Each race has maximums on its stats.  There are stats, such as Dexterity or Psi Power or Endurance or Intelligence.  Each stat has a set of skills that are underneath it.  As you do things in Neocron you raise your stats.  Once a stat gains a point you will get some skill points that can only be distributed to the skills that are part of that stat.

So if you gain a point of Psi Power you cannot raise Small Guns but you could raise Defensive Psi skill.  But if you gain a point of Dex by using Small Guns, you could put it into a completely different skill.  So you could use guns forever and never actually increase the Gun skill if you so chose.  However using a Gun tends to raise certain stats more than others.

The number of points you have in certain stats and skills determines what equipment you can use or what Psi Powers you can use.  Certain Pistols may require a high dex and high Small Guns skills.  A lot of building a character is dependent on this.  Even if you get a good Small Guns skills by devoting all your Dex based skill point into Small Guns, you may still be limited to middle-tier equipment by your low dex .

The Psi Powers work the same way.  Except that only Psi-Monks can get to 100 in Psi Power.  The other 3 races are all quite a lot lower.  Private Eye is the only other one that can have significant Psi Power and that is still quite low.   Enough to get an OK shield or something.

As you raise your Psi Power you can invest in the Offesnive Psi Skill(nukes) or Defensive Psi Skill(Heals and shields).  There are also a couple other Psi Skills to invest in.  But for getting powers the Offensive/Defensive are key.  You equip your Psi Gauntlet as a weapon and that switches your weapon (in first person view) to a hand and you will have 8 "hotslots" on the keyboard that you can map to Psi Power.  You would then cast your your powers like any FPS type game, say Oblivion or Morrowind.

Basically only a Psi-Monk can ever be a really good nuker or healer/protector.  And Psi-Monks have fairly low Dex and very Low Str.  So you can never make someone with excellent Psi Powers and excellent Gun skills.  You can make a Psi Monk with ok small Guns.  You can make a Private Eye with very good small guns and ok Psi shields.  You can make a Spy with excellent guns and crappy psi shields.

You get to choose how you spend your skills, but certain combinations are impossible.  Also some things tend to be hard to train due to the way the stat advancement works out.  A Psi-Monk gets higher than a Spy in Psi but they also are able to get to various powers that give more "xp" to the Psi stat.  So they advance it faster too.   Since a high level Psi-heal may train more than a low level one.  What exactly you use stuff on also determines stat xp to some extent.  Its hard to explain.  But shooting hard thing with a sniper rifle will do better at raising dex than some other things.

Okay, thanks for the detailed response! Can you give me some examples on some of the cooler offensive Psi Skills?

There was a problem where new players could not join, Don't know if that's been sorted yet.

Hi Orion, yeah it was me that posted elsewhere about your problem.  I'm having the same thing.  Too bad too, becuase I like the whole cyberpunk feel of it.  Saw one of the coolest vids of somone in "stealth/invisible" mode follow another player to his appartment.  When that player left his appartment, away from sight, the invisible player un-cloaked, and appeared to hack his lock w/ what I'm assuming some sort of high level spy-skill and stole stuff from within the victim's appartment.  There are a lot of features that appealed to me about this game as shown on their website.

I might try the "ultimate game" card you can buy at 7/11 stores in the states.  Maybe then it will allow me to create an account.

Also on a side note, that may or may not be related to Neocron and Reakktor Media as a whole, but I posted on the screenshots for Dark Prophecy since their site is blocking my IP, so I can't even create a beta account for it.

Seem's a lot of unexplained issues are arrising from Reakktor Media, just wish there was official word from them, addressing all these issues.

Good Luck to the OP, and I'll let you know if that Ultimate Game card worked out where Click2Pay and PayPall have failed me.

Awesome, give us some juicy details about the game... but not just game mechanics, also talk about the atmosphere of the game, how the world makes you feel.  We are all here very much interested in this game, despite the dated graphics, as more importantly it appears to offer more depth in what your character can do when compared to other mmo's.

Going to 7/11 as of this post.

    Ciao for now,

Unfortunately I'm broke, so buying a game card doesn't really help... that's the point of a "free trial," to see if I like it  before I buy it. If anyone wants to help me out with this, let me know; I have an idea but I need a person who CAN sign up for Click2Pay to establish my trial account for me.

This is an app, a bit out of date, called Neoskiller that has an equipment DB and shows how you can build a character:

    www.techhaven.org/component/option,com_docman/Itemid,132/task,doc_details/gid,113/

This is a website called Neoterm that has various guides and links:

    www.rpgplanet.com/neocron/index.asp

And this seems to be a pretty good wiki:

    wiki.techhaven.org/Main_Page

Damn you now i am thinking of trying to resub ;).

Game has a good community but its small and many people are non-english.  Reaktor is a german company.

    Edit:

Here is a list of various DB listing:

    www.techhaven.org/db/

If you want a list of all psi stuff you can click on the PPU or APU module lists Under Weapons.
