Funcom could be #2 in the MMO Market

If you sit back an evaluate the world that is Anarchy Online, it is an amazing balance of skills, classes, itemization, conflicts, zones, mobs etc. I can't talk about PvP in AO, I haven't tried it.

I just scratch my head at what if Funcom used the investment/resources poured into AoC and placed them on modernizing AO.  My feeling is they would probably have the #2 MMO next to WoW in population, features, uniqueness and most likely content etc.  It would not be tagged a "WoW clone" because it launched earlier and is not really comparable.  It is too dam unique, nothing really compares.

Do you think Funcom will ever realize the "diamond in the rough" they own and bring it up to todays MMO expectations (whatever that means)?  If I ran Funcom, I would lock a handfull of Devs in a room for about a year and let them go at it.  My guess is Funcom would reap major rewards in fans and $. Probably more than AoC could ever muster. This games concepts are a true gem, I just hope Funcom realizes it someday.

PS: I am aware they are working on a graphics engine update (less new models), but my guess is every developer is working on AoC now, so AO sits...waiting ....

They currently have a 3 person team, led by Enno Rehling, dedicated to the graphics engine. They don't work on AoC.

They don't need to switch Dev resources from AoC, they just need to put the $$ into advertising the game to the degreee that the more recent games get.

I feel if they put the capital into AO instead of AoC we would have a new graphics engine by now. Not only would we have the new terrain and nano effects but we would have new avatars. Do you think AoC has a three man team? I doubt it.

AO is an old game. While i'm also waiting for the graphics update I can't see failcom putting to much more into the game.

AO is the second MMO i play the longest after WOW.  Over 2 years.  It's the best Sci-FI MMO on the market period.  However it's an old game and i stop believing in Funcom.  They announce the graphic upgrade over 2 years ago and it still no where near ready.  I dont believe will ever see the engine upgrade at this pace it would just be delayed forever.

AO is a very good mmo, I will try it again after they switch gfx Engine to the new one one. Hopefully they will add some new content so that one can get stuck again :). Hopefully DX10 also,

I would love to see them take a page out of CCP's playbook.

Letting this wonderful game die on the vine is a shame, and they need to pull their heads out and look at how EVE has conitinued to upgrade itself and rebrand itself...with Free Expansion too.

Funcom can and should do the same for this game. as CCP has done for EVE over the years.

Actually if they put more $$ in AO your right, it would be competing with WoW, why? Have you even noticed the AMOUNT of Scfi-Fanbase in the world? They could relaunch AO with a new engine and game mechanics updates in regards to leveling, OMG is all i can say.  They could at least peak 1-2million subs minimum.  This game has the most unique skill system in any game I'ver ever played, and was also my first and I've kept coming back to it over the past 7 years.  I want to see it survive, it has more content than most games I've played combined.

I was just telling a friend of mine the other day that if someone came out with an AO like game (with some modifications), they could probably pull 300k solid subscribers without any issues at all, probably more over all.

But right now, we are caught in our own, modern day, clone wars, where every game coming out seems to want mimic EQ/EQ2/WoW formula...

Personally, I'd love to see Turbine do a game like this, with their (relatively) seamless game engine, it would probably do pretty well and they have experience with sandbox games (given their first was one, in Asheron's Call).

But even if they upgraded the engine, rebranded the game and took us back to just the original story line of Rubi-ka (before all the other crap) on a new server set (call it AO:Reborn or AO2 or something like that), they'd have a winner of a new game with already having the primary gameplay built and tested with 8 years of data behind it.
