IceDKayIceDKay Member Posts: 1

So there is and will always´s be those who choose Wintel (PC. operating Windows) and there will also be those who choose a alternative system like OSX or Linux, so i want to ask you Windows user (i would assume those who use this forum are about 80%) and every other EVE user to help us make the game even better by allowing Mac and Linux user´s to play the game. The more the merrier image

please help us @: http://www.petitiononline.com/eve2106/petition.html

Please really consider this before criticizing us (the mac & linux users) we are just like you and them! like to play a good game image

CCP doesn't have enough people to go after such a small group of people. If you want Linux code too then they need have more people to write the code, more people to test it (it's gonna need lots of testing since there can probably easily be conflicts between it).

CCP has also already answered this question:

    http://www.eve-i.com/home/dancer/page/page_fullnews.php?id=1805

Hakera> Shoragan> is there any chance that there will be a linux client for eve? or could ccp help wine/transgaming to fix the remaining problems (i.e. all menus are white)

Oveur> No linux client atm, we'd need to do an opengl version of the rendered, the python and c part would go over pretty easily

Oveur> then there is various core stuff that need adressing, but thats more time than complexity

Oveur> however, the problems is maintaing the various clients. We're finally getting our current patch process and development cycle to a point where we're getting close to satisfied

Oveur> needing to do a double code branch pipeline and ensure that all patches are available for both at the same time is ... very time and cash consuming

Oveur> I'd rather invest in getting EVE to work on the emulators, but we're neck deep in getting performance up on our native system, lets do that first before going to other platforms :D

    Oveur> (lose, not loose) :D

Helmar has posted a dev blog about this earlier tonight

    http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp

Noticed this petition about adopting EVE to more operating systems. This topic has often been discussed here at CCP but it always boils down to were we should focus our efforts, i.e. should we port to Mac and/or Linux or concentrate on making existing platform even smoother.

Nothing would be done until after Shiva of course, I would still be interested to hear what you think.

I wouldnt mind it,  as long as they could keep up with the regualr game,  while developing for new platforms on the side.  Or hiring new people all together.

I always want to see more people play Eve.  Its a great game and it deserves to have more people.  I just dont honestly think all that many people play games on macintosh's or linux platforms.

Only way it would benefit the community is if a lot of marketing went into promoting the new versions as well as the windows version. Not enough people know about EVE to justify it.

Wow, that would SUCK! Right now the devs spend their time developing and coming up with new things and bug fixes. That would slow to a crawl if there were multiple platforms to have to consider for each one. Not to mention the customer service problem, with each OS added, you have that much more overhead to CS.

CCP has targeted well and it is paying off for them, as can be seen any time you log in to the game, the number of people online at any given time still boggles my mind.

It is obvious there is an attempt, and I think it is by one or a couple people, who think the world should bow to their "No Windows" view and cater to them. If you want to use a certain OS, use it, just don't think the world should develop for you when it is obviously not going to be a profitable venture. You can argue that, but if it was profitable, not only would CCP be doing it, a ton of other companies would be also, and I just don't see it. This isn't criticizing your choice of OS, but you should know what applications are supported and make an informed decision before getting into a certain OS. If, as you say, linux and mac users want to play games, cool, but it wasn't high on the priority list when you decided not to use windows.

I forgot, you don't want to be criticized for using the OS of your choice, yet look at the wording in your "poll". That "I'm stupid" statement wouldn't count for criticism towards the majority of the people here, would it? Nah!

"CCP doesn't have enough people to go after such a small group of people. If you want Linux code too then they need have more people to write the code, more people to test it (it's gonna need lots of testing since there can probably easily be conflicts between it)."

This is exactly true, these companies need to make money to stay in business, and if they put all their resources to just a few people happy, then they will disappoint the masses, possibly losing more money in the long run.  If you want to play games, I suggest you buy yourself a PC/Windows box.  Linux is great for the hobbyist/hackers/servers, Macs are great for desktop publishing and graphics, but frankly they suck for games.

Managers, Developers, Artists, and Testers all cost money.  These mmorpg's cost upwards of 20 million dollars just to release for the PC.  Porting is not as easy as you may think and it costs a great deal of money.

Instead of asking the developer of a game to port for 2 million dollars, why not just go pay $1000 for a second computer.

I know why... it is because of that hacker mentality of giving into the big corporations, and hey that is fine, been there done that.  But if you want to play awesome games, you really only have two choices; write your own game, or buy a PC.

    ::::02::

Have you all noticed that the person who posted this has posted 1 time, the beginning of this silly thread. They haven't been back. I have seen this same thing posted in the EVE forums...it dies quickly there because everyone knows, it is not going to happen. It makes no sense as a company, and that is the bottom line. Petition away. But be honest, make the petition say "Cater us few people and screw the masses, who cares if CCP goes belly up and EVE goes away, we are making a statement against Microsoft by not using their OS." ::::08::

Yeah, totally agree with you, Catastrofik, esp. about the world not bowing to a "No Windows" view and catering to a minority group (I think you had it about right when you said there are one or two people on earth who dislike Windows). America isn't about minorities (race, class, or OS), and games shouldn't be either. And yeah, people say most people who buy Macs don't play games. I have a Mac, but I bought it because it's a good computer, not because I wanted to play games. I love gaming, though, and get whatever games I can find when a gracious company goes out of their way, jeopardizing their LIVELIHOOD and FINANCIAL SECURITY in order to ACKNOWLEDGE the few whining minorities who say they want some sort of representation in the world. But the truth is, the world rarely "develops" for minoroties because they are non-profitable people. That's the way things are: Fairness and equality have nothing to do with it.

Windows users are well over 80%, I guess it's nice that this person is optimistic though.

It'd be nice, I have a friend with a Mac who likes EVE, but can't play due to Mac.

But if it was between other OS' supported or more content, I'd go more content anyday.

  • zedsterzedster Member Posts: 2

well duh. If there was a choice between raising the minimum wage for or getting a bonus, most people would say bonus. Like I said, that's the way things are: Fairness and equality have nothing to do with it.
    god bless america

It's not fairness and equality it's called business managining. If they would move to support Linux and Mac users, they would have to first devote alot of time into recoding the game to fit these platforms. Once that is done, they have to update all their servers to run to new programming. Now that the people can actualy log in to play, there is the issue of people running different versions of the game of the same server. Not to mention EACH update, they would have to code 3 times in order to fit the 3 different clients available. When you consider the size of EVE, and the limited number of staff available at CCP, I seriously doubt that would be a good move on their part.
