heh From what I've seen, if you're an MMO developer looking to make the payday- it'll be in your best interests NOT to go down the path of AoC and WAR.

Not that the option would likely even be available to a company like Aventurine as they've taken this long to get to the pre-release of what is essentially a contentless game (or a blank slate, so as to not offend the delicate sensibilities of some   ).

Anyways, I'll appreciate them once they release a working and interesting game. I really don't care what they're "doing for the industry" as similar titles like Mortal Online, Earthrise, Fallen Earth, etc are still in the pipeline whether Darkfall flops or succeeds. They're adults and don't need an 'A For Effort' from me just for trying, specially if it is effort without tangible results.

    I don't get this.

I find the definition of supporting a game is to be willing to try it when it's released and looks promising, according to whatever means you find to get a solid impression from it.

It's nothing personal, but I don't think any game or company is worth of anyone's "100% devotion", even because praising a game beforehand or even bashing it won't make a difference in the long run. The only thing that really matters is if the company will be able to make the game live up to it's potential.

I honestly feel that the bulk of the flack that the "Game" receives is as a result of Tasos and Aventurine.  When I say Aventurine I mean the higher ups in the company ...... not their average employee just doing his/her job.  Hate is a pretty strong word in my book but since it's attached to the word "Hater" we'll go with it.

In my opionion Tasos and Aventurine have earned every bit of "Hate" that flies their direction.  I won't go into posting the absolute straight up BS that has spewed out of their mouths over the last 8 years, but it's certainly there.

I am all for the indy company trying to do something a little different.  Probably more than most.  Flying Labs Studio, creators of Pirates of the Burning Sea, another small company that tried to do something a little different.  Was there for every bit of it ........ right down to the pre-order.  Well, long story short, things didn't quite go as planned.  Game had it's issues, pushed out a little early concerning the ground game ( or lack there of I should say) other areas that made it fun for a minute but not a long term option.

Still to this day I completely respect the company and what it tried to accomplish.  One of the higher ups in the company (can't even remember his name) was in the forums here on an incredibly frequent basis.  Yes ..... he was pushing his game.  Honestly and openly.

They signed on with SOE ....... the shit completely and totally hit the fan on these boards.  He was still here "trying" to explain their reasoning.  You could see the frustration in his posts, I'm sure you can imagine.  He maintained his honest and open approach and respect I both him and his company for it.  I would readily try another Flying Labs Studio game.

Funcom ........ need I say more.  Not an indy company, but I'd sooner spit on Gaute Godager than speak to him.  Filled with deceit and lies he is.  Luckily I got into the beta and figured things out prior to vesting anything in the game.  I doubt I'll ever try another Funcom game as long as I live.  I will bad mouth them until the day I die.  I don't go into the AoC forums and voice my opinion but if it is brought up, you can be sure I'll tell whomever, what I think.

My "Hate" is not for Darkfall.  It's for Tasos and Aventurine ....... I simply cannot deal with the BS.  The only saving grace is Aventurine has not asked for any of my money yet.  I completely and totally hope Darkfall is everything Tasos has claimed.  I think most feel this way ....... they don't hope it fails.  It's just there are too many red flags that are hard to ignore.  If Tasos and Aventurine were a little more open and honest there would be a lot less bad mouthing of their game.  I'm sure of it .......

I will pre-order this game when given the opportunity.  If for nothing more than posting my 2 cents on these boards.  My honest, opiniated but fact based thoughts on Darkfall.

Same here. If I like a game, or even the idea of a game, I'll support it by giving the devs the benefit of the doubt, following the development of the game, and signing up for the beta to test it out and see if I can help things along. If it's stable and entertaining enough to merit paying for it on launch, I will. If those devs start working on a different game, I'll keep an eye on it to see if it interests me. For me, that's the extent of my support.

    Exactly.

I don't understand the whole idea of personal devotion to the devs of a game, or to the game company itself. It makes less than zero sense to me. For example, I can enjoy a game like Gears of War 2 without kissing Cliffy B's ass on a message board. And I'm enjoying WAR but don't have any pressing need to praise Paul Barnett or Mark Jacobs here or anywhere else. The fact that I've got an active sub to the game is enough.

    Hear Hear, Lidane.

Heh I'm sure that those who play and enjoy WAR have no problem acknowledging the ....clownshoes that those in charge sometimes show. (1.2 is the last chance I'm giving them, BTW)

I would hope that people playing and enjoying ANY game out there would have no problem acknowledging the clownshoes the devs of said games sometimes wear. In fact, it's healthy to do that. I mean, I'm having fun in WAR (which was a HUGE surprise to me, BTW-- I never followed the game or had much interest in it due to the PvP aspects, however playing the game in open beta was a pleasant surprise) but I'm the first one to admit that Mythic has a lot of work ahead of them still. But it's fun, so I play it.

That's why I don't get the whole concept of 100% devotion to any game developer or to a game, whether it's due to their game design agenda, or whatever. No developer is perfect. And no game design is perfect once you add in the most random variable of all-- players. Games will always change and adapt to their audience and nothing stays stagnant. The best any of us can do is play a game as long as it's entertaining and fun. If it's not, you cancel and move on to something else.

No company deserves 100% devotion especially when its based on 'what they are attempting to do'.

Sure you can appreciate what they are attempting to do, because appreciation is something that can be given freely. Devotion is like respect; It should be earned over time based on what has and hasnt been done, not potential.

When a company can show me the reasons they should be respected, then maybe I will respect them. But untill they can earn it, they will only get my appreciation.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
