i agree with the above post. Darkfall: If you want to be like EVE, then start acting like EVE. They keep constantly in touch with their playerbase asking "how would you improve mining?" or "what can we do better for new players?" and they make a ton of posts within these constructive areas. They also release a ton of info, keep all their numbers right up front, and don't hide anything from the general public. Hell their newest expansion (which are always free) is on test center for anyone to try. month or 2 before it launches.

Sadly most betas see patching like that, usually a few months before release and the devs still take time to talk about the game. This is supposed to be a stress test phase DF is in, there shouldnt be this much activation of features or spawn groups or anything, just stability and area balancing.
The last game I saw that patched like this before launch was AoC, and well...

Nobody seems to make the correlation between activating features in a BETA (beta is almost by definition, feature complete) and they are still adding features and changing things.
Is there server up to max population yet, because this is a stress test phase correct ?

When a game enters a stress test phase the game is supposed to be of release quality before the phase begins. A stress phase is from 3 weeks to a month before a release and takes place after the testing of features. During a stress phase the only thing that is to be tested are the servers; their stability under load, zone variences and login server capabilities. Features are not to be added during this phase of testing, nor are features to just be starting to come online at this phase.
4 days for stress testing?!

Talking about it is one thing, doing it is another.
To this date they have been doing nothing but patching stuff in and fixing features. Again this is early phase beta work, not stress phase testing.

"On 25/1/09 (1/25/09 for the Americans) an article was printed in the Greek Magazine "E" (epsilon) distributed with the major Greek newspaper Eleytherotypia
The article contains quotes by:
*
Tasos Flambouras
*
Financial director Spyros Iordanis
*
Art director Henning Ludvigsen
Here is a summary of the article (the important stuff):
*
The journalists visited Aventurine's base and saw the game played live.
*
25th of February is confirmed as release date.
*
10.7 million euros were spent for the production.
*
The subscription cost is expected to be 12 euros.
*
The world is roughly the size of Luxembourg and takes 6 hours to cross (means of transport unspecified).
*
Monster spawn points relocate if they are attacked repeatedly.
*
Also it says something about monsters attacking cities if they feel confident enough(!)
*
According to Tasos, the target player-base for a server is 50k people
*
Tasos quote:"We are more worried about managing the extra customers than, how we're gonna fill up the first server".
*
It also says something about the team expressing fears about the possibility of having to relocate the company to a different country in order to maximize their potential
That's the important stuff, we already know about the rest (player built cities etc). The article also contains photos of Henning Ludvigsen, Natascha Roeoesli, Roman Tassios and another bearded guy whose name it doesn't mention."

I don't speak greek so I really can't verify the translation. For some reason however ...... I can see Tasos saying this.
~Hairysun~
Actually that 50k figure isn't too far-fetched if he is talking about accounts and NOT concurrent players.
Usually a server can contain about 4-5 times it's concurrent player maximum in player accounts. So, it may be that is what is being communicated here.
I personally think they will be trimming down their stated goal of 10k concurrent users though. From everything I've seen, it just doesn't look like they are able to get it working with anything approaching 10k concurrent users and have the server remain stable.
Once they get everything enabled and with players playing the game as it's intended... 3-5k users per server looks to be a much more attainable goal.
They may decide to launch with servers capped at that amount and they try and tweak the code to allow them to adjust them higher after Release.
If they do end up going with the 3-5k concurrent users then that would put the accounts on the sever somewhere in the 12k-25k range.
According to Tasos, the target player-base for a server is 50k people
If Tasos really did say this...Aventurine STILL hasn't realized they've bitten off more than they can chew.

That is the part that I find interesting. The rest is old rehash that we have heard for the last 2 years with the exception of the 50K number.
Relocate to another country huh? Strange a couple days ago I said they will take the full price preorder money and run off to the Cayman Islands along with the remaining development money. Self fullfilling prophecy???

Is the OP talking about Shadowbane? Though it is not "flourishing" right now, it did have a very rocky start but then gained a respectable following...

You are so correct. I totally forgot that the next great software powerhouse in the world behind Greece being number one is the Cayman Islands.
I just didn't want to be the first to say it because you have many rabid fanboys here who will insist upon spreading some fiction that it was perfect from day one.
EvE has stability issues in very large battles _today_. I'm talking about serverside stuff, not even the client. Admittedly, the kind of battles which bring about crashes are incredibly huge and happen rarely, but it's still kinda anticlimactic. You have this game which actually features a strategic element (as opposed to being limited to tactical, per-battle planning), and it explodes when the super battles actually take place.
At launch, yeah. It had some issues.
They improved on it, though. CCP was just a no-name studio back then, and like the DF morons, they came from what was considered to be a no-name country (in terms of game development). Its early subscriber base was incredibly small. They never gave up.
The very best case scenario is that Aventurine turns out to be another CCP. However, I'd put the odds of that happening at about 1/100,000. It could happen, though. It probably won't, but it could. Like the title says, that's your one ray of hope. The only catch is that you have to stick by the game to realize it, and that's a huge risk. You could stick by the game, only to watch it utterly collapse a few months after launch, if it even launches.

I can be wrong obviously but I don't think Aventurine has the talent CCP has, not by far.

EXACTLY.
Nobody seems to make the correlation between activating features in a BETA (beta is almost by definition, feature complete) and they are still adding features and changing things.
They transfered implemented features from their codebase repository and internal server to the beta servers ..they balancing and tweaking and some minor addition.
Nothing unusal for a Beta. Right.
For a beta, no.
For a Stress Test phase, hell yes.
In a stress test phase, all features that are to be in at release are supposed to have been fully tested and implemented prior to the phase starting, not during the phase and just days from release.
16 days still left for stress test..How much is needed for a stress test ? They have still time to balance towards beta tester preferences and do a usuall 4 days stress test in the end.
There are 3 types of people in the world.

They further with features then you think or try to put here..they talked about login and patch process stress test 2 weeks ago.

Talking about it is one thing, doing it is another.
To this date they have been doing nothing but patching stuff in and fixing features. Again this is early phase beta work, not stress phase testing.

This nice little summary was posted on forumfall by user "Cuelda" and I thought it was worth posting here as well. Thanks to Cuelda for the info

Ahhhh ..... that reminds me.

If Tasos really did say this...Aventurine STILL hasn't realized they've bitten off more than they can chew.

It's honestly like everyone logs onto WoW, and games like WoW, just to masturbate. Everyone plays by themselves, and when they don't, they get what they want and get off.

You mean relocate to the Cayman Islands to maximize their potential, right?
Is the OP talking about Shadowbane? Though it is not "flourishing" right now, it did have a very rocky start but then gained a respectable following...
You mean relocate to the Cayman Islands to maximize their potential, right?
You are so correct. I totally forgot that the next great software powerhouse in the world behind Greece being number one is the Cayman Islands.
Aye, the suspense is killing me :P
You cant just start by saying "Ill tell you about another game and then not name it!
But overall I do agree somewhat. A game can get better with age if the devs keep up the work.
EvE online.
Its beta testing phase still. Stress testing is OB.
And yeah, I'm talking about EvE.
