I have been out of touch with the hardware part of the computer world for a number of years and am looking to build a new gaming system. Could you hard-core folks out there tell me what you would do with $2500? This should include processor type, RAM, video, sound, system board, and power supply. It should not include keyboard, mouse, monitor or speakers. I plan to stretch the video across 3 monitors using a Matrox triplehead splitter, so video will have to be pretty powerful.
let me know what you guys think...

Above comes in at just under $2300. I have not listed the best available but kept within your budget.
I think a new Phenom II 940, would be cheaper and almost the same preformance and you could get a better graphic card this way....maybe a the GTX 285?
amd phenom 2 3.0
ati 4870x2
motherboard with the amd gx chipset
antec p182 case
4 gigs of ram
corsair power supply
raptor HD
His budget is 2500, you're undershooting a bit.

you could spend more but why?
Saw this over at Tom's Hardware not to long ago. Seems like a pretty good system for less than 2500.

Newegg has excellent service and good prices. I order from them if I upgrade a vid card or a part. I also look at Frys. For full systems, I look at cyberpower:

They have some fixed systems and they have a custom configurator. If you want to price the above mentioned systems you can look at their configurator.
I do have a questions about video cards... How do multiple video cards work with a single monitor? Don't the pci express draw from the mobo memory? Why have multiple vid cards?
*edit* I read the vid card thread and had my questions answered.
*edit2* I like leadtek vid cards because they came with massive heat sinks.. I have been out of the hardware thing so other cards may be better... IDK.
