Why do so many people still remember pre-cu so fondly?

Had SOE/LA had any gumption to work on the fixing the foundations of the game, rather than jumping from fire to fire, I may have fonder memories of the game itself.  Instead every patch introduced more of the same, and frankly I can't blame SOE/LA for wanting to change the game; however unethical imo the decision was.

You say the concepts were great, and then say you can't blame SOE/LEC scrapping those concepts, even though you acknowledge doing so was unethical?  Wouldn't it have been more understandable if they had focused on realizing the potential of those concepts, instead of tossing them in the trash in favor of concepts that, even with all the attention they have recieved for the past three plus years, have yet to form into a fun game?

The dev team never tried to fix what was there.  Those 'more of the same' patches were focused on screwing with the core mechanics.  The only stability the game ever had was between patches.  What the game needed wasn't a revamp, it was a dev team that was focused on adding to what was there.  That is something the game has never had, even to this day.  The one constant SWG has had was that the developers were incompetent from concept to the present.  It will be the only constant until the game shuts down.

This. All Sony had to do was fix the game they had. Biggest waste of potential ever!

Most of us already know about it and has played it, but you aren't allowed to discuss it on MMORPG.com.

The question really is, WHY did SOE want to change the game? It didn't need changing, they're about the only company to ever change the face of a game complete and TWICE at that too. Ex-devs even admitted that SOE didn't care if they lost lots of players over the revamps because they were certain they'd gain many more, but that severely backfired on them didn't it.

SWG's pre-cu could've stayed put by just fixing the bugs and rebalancing doctor buffs and armor and even weapons (and slicing) then add content from there on (they did a great job with the Corvette, DWB and village and those aren't gay instances).

'Blame' maybe somewhat of a misnomer; instead I should've said 'understood'.  SWG was an unmitigated mess, so I can 'understand' why SOE/LA would simply want a muligan.  While I understand why SOE/LA may have made the decision, I also admit it may have been unethical.

Who knows.  We can speculate that the game wasn't making as much money as SOE/LA expected it to.  SWG had an enormous amount of issues that required fixing and possibly SOE/LA made the decision to scrap the pile of garbiage en lieu of something they though would compete with WoW.

You just reminded me of something else that I really enjoyed: the corvette missions.  Those really were very well done, from the way you had to obtain the ticket, to the layout of the ship, to the numerous mission objectives.  That was my favourite content in that game.  I also really enjoyed the geonosian cave.  I think with content like that, the devs were making important progress.  Give me good character customization, a skill point system, sandbox tools and content like that to give me a place to use all my stuff, and I'd play a game like that forever.  Well, lol, it would have to work of course :P.  Like everyone always says, fix the bugs and issues, and add enjoyable content.  Again, when I look at games like EVE, it gives me hope for this genre because it seems that this is what they do; and it seems to work for them, and the players.  Win/win.

That pretty much sums it up for me ^_^.

I don't often hear people speaking fondly of pre cu for technical reasons. I often hear people speak about the "potential" the game had and the friends that we made but in regards to the game I have not seen anyone praising SOE for the game they created.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

It's partially nostalgia, partially because it is human nature that knowing you cannot have something makes you want it more, and partially because a lot of sandboxers can't find a sandbox game they like.

I don't remember pre-cu so fondly. I remember having to fight lizards as a lowbie character in a Star Wars universe. And, like most SOE games, SWG did not run well on the machine I had at the time. Actually, it's been that way for all SOE games I've played. Their games never seem to run well on whatever system I am using at the time. I also did not feel like SWG was "star warsy" enough and with the addition of vehicles, ships and JEdi seem to make it worse. The final nail in the coffin was when they introduced land speeders and how laughably awful they handled.....loved getting stuck over and over again in Tatooine's many pits and trenches. Haven't looked back since. Here's hoping the new star wars game gets it right.

Fileplanet host the Emulator client and SOE havn't taken it down.

SWGEmu team said they spoke to SOE and aslong as they don't charge for it theres nothing they can do.

Yet mmorpg.com don't let you say the words swg emu................... it's not like SOE can sue the site for people talking about it.
