Casual PvP Fun?

I'm thinking of returning to WoW.  I haven't yet picked up the expansion.  The thing is I play very casually.  I seldom have time for raids and dungeons, so I rely mostly on solo questing, crafting, and PvP'ing.  However, I've followed the news about WoW, and I see they've went with 3 tier PvP gear system.

I'm betting that at best I will only be able to get the set for the bottom tier, which I believe is the rare Savage set.  I might be able to do some arena here and there, but I'll never get the top tier set... I 'd be lucky to get a few pieces of the middle tier set.  Anyway, lets assume I'd only be able to get the bottom set and nothing else... is playing Battlegrounds and Wintergrasp still fun being undergeared?  Or do you get steam-rolled and/or feel incredibly gimped?

Thanks!

WoW is casual since the expansion raiding is a joke and is easier to get good rating on pvp.

You'll be able to get the T1 savage set (blue) by doing BG's - or you could go with the crafted pvp blue set - savage saronite for plate - which is nearly as good and a lot easier to obtain for starter gear.

You can also pick up pvp epics for all slots apart from head, legs, chest, hands and shoulders from doing BG's with Wintergrasp. For epics, those slots have to be filled by arena gear currently.

Unfortunately, the best weapons available to you will be crafted epics as they force you to do arena or some PvE to get the really good ones. I'm currently using the Titansteel Destroyer.

This means the people who do run PvE or Arena will have about 25% more weapon damage over you at the worst. TBH I haven't found this a significant disadvantage as yet and can hold my own but as the patches role out and the gear disparity widens I'm hoping we get something to even things out. or the future will be bleak.

So I'm pretty much in the same boat as you really. I don't like to do group PvE so raiding / 5 or 10-manning is out for me. and I wont be forced to do stuff I don't want to do in a game as it defeats the object of playing it - i.e. to have fun.

The only PvE I like to do is solo content. Curiously enough I really enjoy grouping in PvP so not sure what's going on there.

End of the day, pvp isn't viable for developing your character anymore, at least not like it was in TBC.

They have made it so PvE'ers can get pvp gear by cashing in tokens but a healthy chunk of the pvp crowd can't even get a weapon from running Battlegrounds so go figure. I do expect them to change this though as for all their faults Blizzard does listen to their community.

But they haven't announced anything for 3.1 yet - apart from the next PvE raid which is going to have the next tier of pve gear available through it. So that doesn't bode well but see what happens.

Thanks for that, I saw it over on MMOcampion about 10 mins ago.

Even when Season 6 launches the PvE gear will still be easier to get than the PvP equivalents. and it will require a high personal and team arena rating. Which does nothing to help those of us who love the BG's and don't want to fight in a box :P

The crux of the problem is that Blizzard doesn't see their users divided by pvp'er and pve'er but by casual and non-casual.

They rolled out the so-called welfare epics in TBC becuase they thought that PvE gear was unobtainable to the majority of casuals.

They have put that right in WotLK but have over compensated. Now we have people pvping in pve gear, cashing in pve tokens for their pvp gear of choice, or getting pvp gear as drops.

All the while people cannot get anything worthwhile from the BG's. It's unfortuante they are thinking this way as it effectively excludes the casual pvp'er from the game. i.e. a whole chunk of the community who don't want to arena or PvE, myself included.

But I'm hoping the will change tack as they have before.

As mentioned above, I think you will find WoW is a more forgiving game than when it first came out. Casuals can succeed and not be entirly rolled over by hard core raiders in PvP. However, I still find the PvP itself a bit lacking
