Really basic question. What MMO requires the most resources (at max graphics) when it comes to a desktop computer, in the sense of :
CPU
VGA
RAM
I'm curious, as MMORPG's are likely the only thing I'll play on my PC, and I'm hoping to build a desktop soon. So I want to know how much power I'll need in my rig.

If you're building a new computer today, you don't want something that can barely handle the games that are out today. If you do that, in a year you'll come across a game that your computer can't handle, and already have to upgrade it.
Sadly, money might be the major problem. All depends how much I can get with University Grants and so on, I might get a Mac Pro. Sadly I don't know much about Mac Hardware; so upgrading it myself might be some difficulty.
If money is a problem, getting a Mac anything is a bad idea.
Unless you enjoy paying a huge premium for an Operating System.
Mac hardware is no different from any other generally. It's Intel-based now.
Edit: As to your original question, that would probably be Age of Conan (or, as the poster below me says, Vanguard. Completely forgot about that game.)

If you're worried about finances, buying Mac is part of your problem. All Mac hardware is extremely overpriced for its actual performance. You'll need to be installing Windows on the machine to have any chance of playing MMOs anyways, so why not just stick with that? Or use Linux for normal work and Windows for gaming.
In actual answer to your question, I believe Vanguard currently has the highest system requirements. Copied from the Knowledge Base for Vanguard:
RECOMMENDED SPECS
Windows® 2000/XP/Vista
100% DirectX 9.0c compatible computer
100% DirectX compatible keyboard or input device
3.0 GHz Intel OR 3500+ AMD processor
2 GB RAM
Vertex and Pixel shader 2.0 compatible hardware with 256MB of texture memory
DirectSound compatible audio hardware
Broadband Internet Connection
16X Speed DVD-ROM
20 Gigabytes Hard Drive Space
I would advise you to build your own PC tbh. You can get some really great deals from various online stores and putting it all together really isn't as difficult as it sounds. If you don't want to do that, there are plenty of small stores both online and otherwise that would build it for you for a small fee. You really do get far more bang-for-your-buck doing things this way.
As for which MMO's are most resource intensive, that easy - Vanguard and Age of Conan. Both these games are pretty big resource hogs.
I wish you well in your quest to get a new system.
MMORPG History:
Playing - EVE Online.
Played (Retired) - AO, SWG, MxO, WoW, RFO, SoR, CoX, EQ2, GW, L2, Vanguard, LotRO, AoC, TCoS, Aion.
Favourite MMO - Pre-CU SWG, 3 Years, 4 Accounts, 2 Pre-CU Jedi (1 Pre-9).
Awaiting - Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Earthrise.
I built my own PC last year and saved around 500-700$.
I have never taken any computer class in my life, just paid extreme attention to the manuals, reading, re-reading over and over again. Still, things can go wrong.
In 2004 my brother tried to replace my old mobo and cpu with a new one. He made the mistake of not placing copper barrings in the computer case and ended up frying my motherboard. He even had previous experience building his own computer.
But nonetheless, building your own pc will save you a ton of money.
CPU > Lineage 2
RAM > WAR probably
VGA > Probably WAR
CPU > Lineage 2
RAM > WAR probably
VGA > Probably WAR
errr no, not even close
cpu = EQ2
VGA = Vanguard or AoC
Ram = well, that's a toss up, since ram affects all games and programs.
and i built my system 4 years ago with an amd 4200+, 2gbs of 800mhz ram, and last year i bought a 8800 gt evga card, i can blast through every mmo on high (except eq2, which chews my processor for breakfast so i play it on medium), total cost around 500 bucks.
CPU > Lineage 2
RAM > WAR probably
VGA > Probably WAR
WAR is much more optimized than a few other games out there. I would switch WAR with age of conan in VGA, since it's basically trying to BSOD you.
If you have 2GB of RAM, you're set for all of the games currently released.
CPU - Vanguard
VGA - Age of Conan or Everquest 2
RAM - ? Most MMO's will bottleneck on your CPU and VGA before RAM. Just keep 2 gigs, you wont see much of a performance boost in bumping ram above 2 gig like you will with CPU and VGA
out of all the mainstream MMO's, those three are the most demanding on a PC. Forget what people are saying about WAR. Its got nothing as far as these three on demand. Hell, the game doesnt even do AA unless you force it through the video board.
