Do 'new' people still join this game?

I've been playing FFXI on and off for the past 5 years, generally lasting 6 months to a year each time before funds dried or real life got in the way. After deciding to start again about a week ago I finally got hold of the 2008 pack (it's installing now). Now my only question is this: Are there any new people left?
I ask this because, from past experiences and having read other forum posts, I get the idea that everyone is just levelling their subjobs. It's no biggie really, but as a semi-new, returning player (I last played 2007, before university got in the way) I'm a little rusty, and it makes a guy feel a little small for not being able to stick it out all the years.
It's a trivial matter, tbh, but for me part of the enjoyment comes in fighting alongside other newbies, learning about where to go and what to do w/o someone going, 'brb I'll just get my other char/job" . I love this game, but I don't want to be left biting the dust, as it were.

See, now if I were to post something like that on a WoW forum I'd get 'lolz n00bzorsorus!' or something like that. FFXI is for certain the best mmo out there.
It's nice to see that new people are still coming to this wonderful game - my fears have been dispelled and I think this time I shall end up sticking around a lot longer... Once of course I get the damn game installed properly
N: I find it quite amusing that 'lolz' comes up as a mistake, yet n00bzorsorus is recognised
Although I wouldn't call forum response a precise measurement of being the best MMO, I'm glad that you like what you see!

most of the new people are relatives or friends of FFXI players which is pretty good enough i guess lol. but i could wish for more...
I just started playing. Was at best buy and just picked up the 15 dollar pack. I started on the Bahamut server, also. Having fun thus far!
