I had always wanted to give FFXI a try but by the time I finally did it seemed several years too late........I dont know if the 5 years of Everquest spoiled me or if it jsut wasnt my game but I couldnt get into FFXI....... I tried some of the graphics tweaks but could never get it to where it didnt look kind of blurry and otu of focus...... THen the first city I tried I literally ran around for 45 minutes and still was not out of it (dont remember the name but it looked like a giant jungle village of some sort).....

I created another character and tried a different area and at least found the outside this time.......There were a couple of low level mobs so I decided to try my hand at combat.....The combat was pretty uninspiring and though I won I only had about half life left......A couple players told me I needed to get potions and that sitting would not heal my life/mana so I ran around for about 30 minutes trying to find a potion vendor but never did........The game just did not click for me for some reason and I moved on after a couple of days....... I think if I had tried the game when it first came out I might have been mose into it but now it felt dated and old.......Also I only played one of the previous FFXI games and it was OK but nothing special....I was just never a fan of the story and never felt a part of it.......

Some people sure lied to you, or at least gave you misinformation. You heal by resting and not sitting. You don't need potions, that just speeds things up. You must of had bump mapping on or didn't tweak the graphics very well. Also, please tell me a game that the combat first starting out is incredibly amazing when you're basically starting from nothing and have no abilities and spells for the most part? That and you seemed to of never used the map.

People that play EQ usually like XI because it's not an easy button MMO like today's stuff. I guess you were the exception. It's too bad you didn't like it. Seemed to me though that you didn't have good direction with the people you talked to more than anything.

Intresting i may put this in the lists of game i've to try out, before dedicating my time to only one.

It is worth your time to at least trial it. Hell any free trial is pretty much worth your time haha. This one just happened to fit everything I was looking for in an MMO so I stuck with it. What are you playing right now?

like many have said before me.. keep ONE THING IN MIND.

this game is very, very hard to swallow. You have to go through a bunch of playonline crap, registrations, content id's, patches, etc etc.. then you have to spend a few hours getting to lvl 10...

but once that's done and once you start partying from 10 onwards, you will fall in love with this amazing game.

also, the controls might be difficult at first, but trust me they will grow onto you (that's what 1-10 is for)

another reminder, leveling from 1-10 doesn't mean the entire game is like that.. 1-10 is the learning point so please, don't be put off by it..

if you have windows vista i think the drivers for the xbox 360 controller are installed already, if not you can simply go to microsofts website and download it.

now to change the settings ingame to use the controller 1st you must go to your start menu. click on the playonline folder, then ffxi folder and select the config icon.

this will open the ffxi config screen (duh)  and there will be an option to select to use the game pad, enable it and then configure the buttons at your likings. however the basic set up is good. opening the menus ect will feel like your playing an action rpg. only thing youll use your keyboard is to type.

This is why many mention ffxi was their 1st mmo. this game did bring many to the mmo community. and currently its the only mmorpg out there that slides console players to become full fledged mmo players. This is why strict pc mmo players find it hard to get used to this game XD

    Is there a trial?

I used to play FFXI a long time ago but it was a lot more of a time sink than it seems to be now. A lot of good information has been presented making me want to return and give it a shot but I can't seem to find a trial anywhere >,<

WOW I'm retarded, I just found the button on their main page... its in the upper left hand corner.

    LOL!

Gonna have to call you on Bahamut being most populated. If it is, then it's overpopulated and won't be soon. Odin is the most populated.

That and biggest server does not mean best server. I'll just end with that.

Fair enough. I should have said "From what Ive heard". I could very well be wrong though. Althugh from my experience it is quite populated : ) And youre right that isnt always the best thing, it just sounds comforting to new players.

Most servers are pretty well populated. I know mine has a good chunk of players. Anyway, don't always believe what you hear. It can end up screwing things up for you in this or any game. Just make sure you have the facts.

OP thanks for the write up, it was an interesting read.

I have respect for Square Enix for thier older console games and its clear that the MMO they have is solid also.

glad to see you enjoying yourself.

    Looking forward to: Nothing
