well, I'm reading this forum and I'm getting tired of all the warning posts and whatnot.
tbh, I'm not a fan of the game, but then again I'm starting to hate all MMOs right now. anyway, people take this situation with Darkfall way too seriously. I don't blame the trolls nor the fanboys, it's basically always like this for every game and even other stuff, like consoles.
FACT IS - it's only money. if people will get scammed when they buy Darkfall, they lose some money. that's it.
if they DON'T get scammed but get a game they don't enjoy, well, too bad. but that shit happens all the time. how many of you went to a movie you disliked? how many of you paid for a meal that tasted like shit? how many of you bought a game you never liked?--- THIS STUFF HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. it's nothing new.
this game will either succeed, fail or be mediocre. if people are willing to take the risk and pre-order, they should. but this risk is not only with Darkfall, it's with every game. I've bought AoC and I didn't like it, and I did beta tested it before I paid. now my account is collecting dust.
conclusion: no way to know if a game will succeed or fail before it launches, and even then you might need to wait a few months.

ok if it's only money than can you pre order a few games for me?
That has to be the dumbest thing i have ever heard, and since you are 20 i would say it's because you live in your mom's basement and have no ideal of money. Hey maybe if your lucky they will take your credit card info and max it out< i mean your mothers card> only money .. please get a job and earn some and see then.. and don'y come back with any i have a job crap.. that statement shows you don't
Only money? What, you think you're speaking to casual humans who don't care about silly paper? Nah, these people are uptight.
My Son would like a Playstation 3 and an ATV, he says it's only money too, can you send the cash by paypal or will you need an address to send a cheque?

A game costs around $50.
A ps3 cousts $400+ and an ATV costs alot more as well.
Bad comparisons. I spend $50 all the time buying new single player games and don't even get a week of entertainment. I have yet to spend $50 on an mmo and get less than a month of entertainment. This site is getting ridiculous with all the "experts' and "genius'" who like to tell us how we should live our lives, or judge people who follow whatever game interests them. You people should really grow up.

It's funny how a post can get childish.

Actually this further reinforces the mentality that developers can make some money on a games release despite it being a serious product capable of sustained subscriber model. Short version is that it reinforced the old guard mentality of rush a game to market and make some easy money.
This doesn't do anyone any good at all.
I'm 33, and I agree with him.
Granted I'm single and no kids, and have very few bills... so I have have extra cash to throw around on a games each month.
I have bought many a MMO to test out, mostly because there were no trail version of them at time; AoC, PotBS, WAR, and Vanguard.
Why? Because I'm looking for the game to replace WoW... still haven't found one.
I know won't like DFO, so I not going drop the $50 on it... but going take risk on Jumpgate.
If you're willing to risk it, and you have the money, go for it. if not, don't.
Well blame us for anticipating this game because of what Tasos was claiming he could deliver. For alot of people, like me who've been following this game for a while (since October 2004) it's been a bit more than just money already. You could say that's my fault for wanting to give an unproven company a chance, but without people like me how would small unknown companies who seem not to even have an advertising budget have a chance to be successful.
With that being said, I stopped following the game sometime in early 2007 and just caught back up with it in November. I mean for the long term investment of my attention and time following the game I'm entitled to want a quality product. I mean this has got to be one of the stupidest threads I've read. SInce you use the fine dining analogy I'll share something with you. I am from what was a relatively small town in Georgia. I remember when we only had a few choices of restuarants. We had Mcdonald's, KFC, Burger King, and a few Sub shops and Pizza Places. Then we got our first upscale Italian joint, they advertised on TV for awhile and we were anticipating it's opening. Now what if on the first they, they just piled dog shit on top of cream of wheat and put some Ragu sauce on top of that and yelled "Mamamia!"
It would have not only been bad for them, but it could've probably been bad for other restaurants trying to break into our area and give us more diversified food choices. I played WoW and I liked it for what it was, but I want something different. And when we were promised a beautiful waterfall and instead we are getting a sewage drain, I'm not going to smile and hand over my money. I mean I'm not trying to put down the game cuz I don't know what it will be I just know we have a right to question and wonder about what some of us could potentially spend our money on.

Some people - generally those who have been poor at some point in their life - understand the value of money. Others don't.
Problem is, warning the players not buying into a scam or a failure is more towards the Dev and the company rather than the fans. I believe right now we have enough shit from them thinking they can throw out any un-finish game and we will blindly caught into the hype, buy the game and paying stupid money every month.
No Doubt even after launch players will still leave by dove if they found out that its crap, eg. Funcom and Mythic, , but i think we should not even buy the game in the begining, only after they offer trial account...
We are not stupid, and i think its important we make this point across to all mmo dev...
RIP Orc Choppa
Spending money on a game you don't like *is* nothing, it happens. Spending money on a game that fails to launch or is unplayable is getting scammed and moronic.
All most are saying is that you are foolish if you leap to pre-order DF; that's it.
The ones saying buying garbage unseen only encourages devs and publishers to release garbage and "fix it later" also have a point.
I've made plenty of $50+ mistakes in my life and I am sure I will make more; but I'm not going to make a glaringly obvious one again and preorder a very questionable game.
I agree with OP. Its only money. Same with all other things in life that you buy.
But why is it so hard to understand that people felt ripped off by AoC...but that was ok? Funcom invested alot of money and manpower into hyping AoC. But by doing that, it was ok to scam people, because of the adds!
Aventurine have not put a cent on hyping DF, and because of that.....if it turns out you dont like it..its a scam???
Do you think they should put a few millions euron into commercials? Would that calm the haters?? Dont think so.
Its your money, do as you want with them.
the sarcasm of some of you guys was out of place. if you don't agree with what I think, I understand. but why be so negative?
in my opinion, 50-60$ doesn't count as much. especially when it comes to buying MMOs; it's not like you buy a new MMO every month. I'm not saying money is meaningless, I'm saying that when you make such purchases, usually of things that are meant to entertain, you sometimes don't get your money's worth; and when that happens, it's only "money" because it's not a matter of life or death.
the guys who warn about buying such a risky product are taking this way too seriously because there are way too many other serious stuff in life to worry about rather than spending 60$ on a game.
anyway, I don't know why I even bother posting here anymore. every time I write something there's at least dozen of people who say only negative stuff.
edit: this has nothing to do with poverty. people who can't afford MMOs shouldn't even bother with Darkfall, or any other MMO. and for the record, I have money problems myself, and so does my whole family, but I still make stupid gaming purchases here and there because I don't spend my money and other things other than the essentials, so I allow myself to make mistakes.
edit2: and to all you guys who "value money so much", may I ask what you do with your money? if you're here, you're obviously spending it on MMOs. I'm pretty sure a lot of people in this world view MMOs as a waste of money.
about AoC: you're right, and tbh it also could be said about a lot of other MMOs. pre-ordering any game is a risk. I honestly feel sorry the most for the people who bought lifetime subs of hellgate: london. and I'm pretty sure Darkfall will never get to that level, and still people seem to complain about Darkfall more.
I tend to find the people that say "its only money" tend to be the ones that dont have any later in life.......... 50 dollars here and 50 dollars there does add up to quite a bit down the road.......Just look at a game like WoW.....If you have bought all the expansions and played from day 1 you would have spent a little over $900.......THe problem is that people only see it as 15 dollars a month and an occasional 40 bucks for an expansion.....Comapnies used to thrive on people that think like that....Ah cmon and buy that new appliance its only 25 dollars a month!!...Then 4 years later you end up paying almost double what it would have cost in the first place......
sure, it's a lot, and people who can't handle these amounts shouldn't deal with this. and well, it's important to plan your investments, but if you limit yourself too much you end up doing nothing. I do understand the people who are more conservatives, but I also understand the people who don't mind spending 60$ on a risky product because that's their fun in life.
I know people who spend thousands of euro on their hobbies, and when their equipment gets wrecked they buy new. these people aren't rich, they just save up money for this kind of stuff because they love it.
one of my friends nearly died while mountain climbing, but he keeps on doing that. life is crazy, and Darkfall is just a game. I've yet to hear of someone who lost all his life savings on computer games.
50 dollars is little under a month of food for me, about a week of natural gas(stove, hot water, radiator), or half a text book. A game has to be good for me to pony up that much food/heat/school expanses for it. So yeah I am not risking that on a game that I know little about.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
because its only money. then since its just money i should give it away to every bum or homeless who asks for it. For every single charity that asks people to donate money.
yeah its only money but guess what. There are many bums and homeless who will use that money on drugs and drinks instead of food . But yeah they beg for you for money for food. infact there are cases of people who "con" money acting poor and live rich due to the morons who fall for it. Offer a homeless / bum some food and watch them back away from you. Only a few will welcome the food. but all cannot be just given money beacuse its just money.
Many charities claiming to help a sick person or a messed up contry have scammed people out of thier money. their help is little to none and they reap the rewards off of moronic people who fall for the sad setting they portray to make people donate to them. You actually have to do extensive reasearch to find the few charities that actually do what they promise.
The point is If i were to blow money on somthing I would prefer to blow it on somthing thats proven or somthing that has credability. I would not blow money on somthing obscure, untruthful ect.
I have had bums ask me for money for drinks. damn bastards being honest. im having a drink myself i wouldnt mind paying the poor chap one. But i wont give money to some dolt who begs for money for food ect when their true purpose is hidden. Same thing goes to charity. if i were to donate somthing. id donate to a charity that is Known, has been proven to be trustful and has shown results of what was done with their donations. Not some obscure charity that cannot provide info of their cause ect.
The same comes with gaming. Id prefer to blow money on companies i know. Its hard to put money on a game where the company has been proven to lie, and in this case, refuse to lift their nda for companies to review ect. This last moment thing sounds of to many alarms if a scam even if the game exsists or not.
If a company has CONFIDENCE in their product they would NOT hide it and much more LIMIT the access to it.
I myself was kinda intrested in it. Harcore pvp, bleh been there with uo and eve so that does not concern me.it shows a heavy resemblence to the elders scroll 3 Morrowind from the way skills are lvled to the enemy ai (pump the difficulty up in morrowind and watch normal mobs evade even your spells). This does intrest me alot but all this obscurity and all is shunning me away .
I cannot get real answers from beta players because they will violate the nda. No company that does reviews cannot do so due to the nda.
The game comes out in 10 to 11 days in digital format with an abscure billing company. if i were intrested still I would have to COMPETE with every other person who chooses to play this game for a spot. I can go on but most has been mentioned in many threads already.

Its not about the money directly. It about letting yourself be ripped off. Yes, its only money, but I don't willingly let people take advantage of me. There are smart consumers and their are suckers. I prefer to not be a sucker.
If it turns out Aventurine is working the launch by being dishonest or underhanded in someway in order to sucker more people into paying for something they wouldn't have otherwise and end up with something they neither wanted or needed then people are right to be upset. Its not about the money, its about whether you stand up for yourself when someone tries to screw you over.
If a you give a cashier a 20, but they give you back change for a 10, do you walk away and say "its only money"?

eh bad comparisons. What do you smoke. did you read what the op wrote. he clearly said its ONLY money. so its the same for a 50$ game and a 400$ ps3. get with the game after all its ONLY money.
to the op :
since its only money well i would like you to send me 200k to pay off my house and spend a year vacation in Puerto Rico. after all its only money, you dont mind. Invest in my happyness

First real logical response in this thread, others were alluding to it but they just jumped on the one phrase "It's Only Money". Contrary to what everyone else thinks, I know the OP doesn't think money is worthless. Does he have enough respect for it? Probably not, he's probably a teen without a job. Still though, he knows it's not worth throwing away on something stupid.
He's defending the stupid people who will throw money away by pre-ordering this game, that's all. Using the reasoning: "fools and their money should be parted".
I don't know about anyone else, but I've spent $50+ on too many games, both single player and mmo that stunk, to ever buy into the hype (no pun intended) again. I've just been burned too many times and don't need to increase my coaster collection.
All these shenanigans with DF simply changed "wait and see" to "wait even longer and see".
Anyone that buys into the whole pre-order thing with all the BS and broken promises from the devs (even before release, which is kind of a first, no open beta, no pre-order etc) deserves what they get.
Maybe the OP has $50 to throw away these days, but I work hard for my $$$.
