Minstrels were severely weakened with the new combat changes, but they can still solo effectively; albeit much slower than other classes!
Solo'd damn near every quest in MoM I could, and recently finished every quest including all that take place in an instance except the final Watcher fight! I've been trying to get a raid going for that.
I think questing ruined grouping. I been playing LotRO for a couple days now, and when I get a group it is just because I am in the same area as the other guy and we need to do the same boss. Once it's done then they leave.

Join a good kin.
People are grouping in my kin all the time. Just find one with a laid back attitude and one where there are alts.
edit: and questing didn't ruin grouping. There are plenty of quests in LOTRO where you can only do them with groups therefore "questing" has nothign to do with stoppign people from grouping. In LOTRO they have made many soloable quests. I suppose they could also have just made group quests.
When I first started playign the game there were so many group quests that I just left. So the questing is just a mode of gameplay. How those quests are made determines group or solo.

In my opinion, Warden, I just started and I'm level 15 at the moment.
With all of their defensive attacks (including Gambits), they can heal themselves, and increase their mitigation dramatically. I haven't had any trouble soloing any content besides the neccessary Book Fellowship.

Thats just theWoW attitude...
Thats how people learned to play an MMO from blizzard. Just take the lead when you find a good group and encourage people to stay in the group longer. Just look at the questlogs and find quests that everyone needs.
Make sure that before you finish a groupquest, your fellowship mates realise that they can reach more goals with your group then solo. Just plan ahead and share it with the others...
And if you group with people for a few hours and have fun make sure to add them to your friendslist. That way you really build your own community and can become a powerlink between people.
Questing is the only thing that challenges people to group.
Back to the mainquestion.....
The best solo character is minstrell, just because its so easy to find groups.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Minstrels who think they are guardians, Lore Masters who think they are champions, ect ect. Learn your role , so when you do group, you won't let your fellowship down
But, but, but... Minstanking is teh funs!
Solareus is right, though - With certain content you need to fill the role and leave creative playing behind. I play dwarf misntrel and I'm into roleplaying so if situation permits I'm there in the front hacking away to my hearts content. Baruk Khazad and all that But then doing certain things I drop warspeech from the start and go in to the healbot mode, maybe throving in a buff or two if situation and time permits.
The real beauty of LotRO and the different classes for me though is the way how your playing your class affects outcome more than slotted traits or gear. My first forgotten treasury run was in an RP group, nothing fancy but it went brilliantly, one character down at final enconter (we had only 1 'tank', captain who wasn't tank specced at all). Then the second run was PUG, raiders in it with fancy gears and optimised builds - Several full wipes... So in groups how group plays together and how players in group play their respective classes is I think more important than anything else.
For solo, I'd say that whatever class you like. You can solo things with each class, some are more slow in killing but then heals, armor etc. can keep you alive longer against harder odds. Finding the class you enjoy playing is more important than burning yourself out trying to do things and solo with a class which is said to be effective, but you do not like playing. Just couple of days ago chatted with friend who leveld different alts to 10-30, always leaving the game due finding the class not fun to play. At his last try he rolled a Loremaster and is now at his 50's, enjoying every moment.
All classes can solo. Chose the one you like to play.
I would say Hunter is best solo for first toon because:
All you need is a good bow and reasonable armor.
Repair costs are lower because you fight from range and wear medium armor
You can port and have enhanced run speeed. You are less reliant on using stable horses for travel which are expensive for a new player.
If you choose explorer as your profession you can tailor your own armor and gather wood for an alt to make your bows.
I know from first hand experience that guardians are slower to level because of their low dps. I have heard it is the same for captains. Armor repair costs are higher for guardian's heavy armor.
I have had fun soloing runekeeper, burglar, champion and loremaster.
I would agree that any class is soloable it really does depend on what you like to do. However I have a few points about the minstrel to why they are excellent for soloing and the first point is that they are good dps when you have war speech on and the trick to surviving with a minstrel is knowing the correct time to switch out of war seach and start healing hard. This if done correctly makes the minstrel almost unkillable unles you have pulled a littel to much . Anyway as it has been said you play what you like. I myself am a captain and an awsome one at that and tbh i didnt find lvlin hard at all and found myself able to handle most situation unless there were about 4 mobs higher lvl than me then i would tactically retreat. As for hunter being the best i would agree they are the best for kiling without getting hurt that much but to do that takes patience and tbh i hate the preperation it takes before every battle. As for wardens I have played one that is now lvl 21 and found soloing it quite difficult even against stuff around my own lvl and i knew all the gambits and im not a bad player just the class didnt seem to suit me so just go with what feels right. try playing all te classes till you find one you like and stick with it.
Comments
Do people need to group in LotRO? When I played it all classes could solo effectively, even minstrels, and they've only gotten stronger since then.

Every class can solo, they just do it differently and have some strengths and weaknesses.
but you can solo right up until level cap if you'd like.

100% Warden. Im level 52 now and almost soloed everything exept book instances.

I'll add my vote for Warden too. Have a level 20, and I love the gambits; self- healing, defense and offense. They can do it all.
