Since there isn't a specific forum for Second Life, I am wondering what opinions are of this 'mmorpg'. I have read the information off the site and watched the C-Net video but am curoius to opinions form those who play or have tried it.
From what I understand its a player created world so I envision a variety of creations from highly artistic to downright horrific graphic creations muddled together in a virtual world - lol. It does seem an intriguing concept however as the developers imply you can ultimately build/create your own game/monsters/houses/shops, etc.
Anyone have any experience with it? Good/bad/indifferent - I dont care, but please express why you have your view rather than a general thumbs up or down. Thanks

lol if it weren't for all of these Second Life advertisements all over this site I may give it a shot. When a company advertises too much that tells me their product is suffering and they need more people to push their revenues.
For Example, I am staring at the First Life: Kate Ramirez office manager/ Second Life: Echo Omega Game Developer banner as I am typing this.
I've seen this advertisement since 1987 (lol exagerration of course), but Second life has their ads ALL over the place...and the graphic toons they do stick in their Ads are sorta sucky...
...like, what's up with the purple rat with sunglasses?
However, if they ever offer a trial I may try it...but I dont know..hey, its just my opinion. The game could rock and I'm missing all the fun..who knows

Last time I played it I got the feeling of it not being a game. Personally it was way too much like Active Worlds. Make a nice lil area for yourself and then just socialize. Maybe I'll try it again because I think I last tried it when it first came out.

As I researched over the internet, I noticed a lot of people hate "fake money" in this game.
As for the economy being real in SecondLife, I personally dislike games/programs where you buy an in-game items using your real money. Having a real economy in-game pretty much scares me.
If the only way was the tedious way to make credits in an mmorpg, then it would be like doing a second chore/job. If there was an easiest way to make millions of credits in-game, then everyone would be like playing in god mode where you virtually have infinate amount of credits and do anything you want.
I've tried second life, and I might come back to playing this game when I get the cash. I tried out for the trial but I havent got a chance to play the game lately.
You can mod polys in-game. Pull and strech and rotate and texture from harddrive. That sort of thing.

Here were my feelings after playing it for the first day of the trial, I have played it before so this isn't my first time going through.
After getting re-aclimated to the game, learning how to change appearences, moving around, flying, and all that jazz I headed off to the mainland. Once there I started going around and clicking on things and promptly got myself stuck. I tried to teleport and after it sat there trying to load for 5 minutes it stopped loading and quickly teleported me nowhere. So then I tried again teleporting myself to my "home" location. That didn't work either, so after about 15-20 mins of teleporting with no avail I tried relogging a few times. This didn't get me stuck either. I think I forgot to mention I got stuck in NOTHING. lol.
While I thought I'd share that with the rest of the world I don't intend it to dissaude people from trying it out. But I do want to point out some of the negatives and positives of the game. While playing I found the game to be rather buggy and fairly laggy. I can understand the buggy part because it isn't a polished and published game. The only QA they do is probobly what they find themselves or hear about from players. I can live with that assuming that the next time I play I can get my char unstuck. :P The lag I'm not so sure about. While I can see there isn't much need for solid speeds the latency makes the movements, while smooth, a bit uncoordinated. The UI wasn't the best thought out as I found a dozen little irking problems in my inventory window and the map window (no map ever loaded for me).
Now that I've total dished it out on the game let me point out some good aspects. The features and design of the game are solid and good. I had no crashes and the game took little time to learn and get started. Being able to fly is a great feature that offers lots of fun all in itself. The graphics for the world are pretty good, about 10 steps up from Active Worlds if you've ever played that. The ability to change your look on the fly and get new looks later on in the "game" make it ever changing and somewhat interesting.
Overall I'd say the game is sound and mildly interesting. I think it is a game genre you have to like in order to play and enjoy yourself. I would recommend it over Active Worlds for those of you who play AW but haven't tried Second Life. I haven't had a chance to use the construction tools but so far the gameplay is like an upgraded AW with maybe less polish to it. Plenty more features at least.
