The desktop I have right now is a piece of shit and I was wondering if I should buy a laptop or desktop for gaming. I want a computer that can run games like Age of Conan without lag. I want a laptop but I heard that gaming laptops are very expensive and still worse than desktops. So I was considering just getting a desktop, but I really want the portability that laptops have.
How much would a good gaming laptop cost?
How much would a good gaming desktop cost?
Okay I'm gonna buy a desktop.
Can anyone suggest a premade one?

well i got the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101166 back when it was 1100$, although i'm unsure if it can run AOC on full graphics (i doubt that), but it is a good laptop with great specs.
If you want to run AOC and still have some cash in your wallet, i would go with a desktop.

For gaming, I'd reccomend a desktop.
They also work out cheaper in the long run, because theyre easily upgradable and have higher spec for a more decent price.
As for prices.. you'll need to look around, prices vary ALOT between country
What I have is a desktop for gaming, and a netbook laptop for mobility, nothing fancy or expencive but does the job
You'll always be able to get a much more powerful desktop for much cheaper than a decent laptop. Like I was looking at a pretty decent entry-level gaming computer recently for about $900, and that was pre-built and had a nice warranty. If you just want something for gaming just get a desktop.
Desktops are always the superior value for getting the most power for the buck.
Unfortunately, my wife wants me to sit in the living room with her while she watches TV, so I pay a ton of extra money for gaming laptops that can handle the new games. (3 grand on my last one)
Gaming laptops run hot, if you actually use them on your lap you need a lapdesk (I stole one of my wife's cutting boards) and still can expect to crack the power connector to the motherboard more than once, so purchase the best warranty available. (trust me on this)
But if you don't suffer from my handicap, build yourself a good desktop, you'll get tons of power for a great price.

build a good but cheap desktop and then buy a netbook.
go desktop. do you have the capability to build one or know someone who can? that will be your cheapest route. i build mine a year ago for less than $600, that was just for the tower another $180 for a 20" monitor.
if you dont have capability to built it youll spend some where around $1000 for and entry level one. just depends how much hardcvore gaming you want to do. thats the question that needs to addressed first.
as for a laptop i do have an aleinware that i bought for depolyments (im in the military) and i do love the portability of a gamer. when im back in the states i really dont use it all that much.
so stick w/ a desktop, itll be cheaper and easily upgradable. my 2 cents
any really good gaming laptops will be well over $1000, i think you can find or make a pretty good gaming desktop wit less then $1000
No pre-made.... Don't be afraid to put together your own PC. Its easy as baking a pie.

Thats pretty much it, the only things you would need are a disc drive, OS, case, mouse, keyboard, monitor (sometimes people already have these in their homes, or take out of older PC's). All for only $1,048.97 and you get rebates on some things.. If I knew your budget I would have went regarding that, instead I picked a higher end build, for a decent amount of money
A pretty decent rig, no?

I have a laptop that can run games like Age of Conan but its not that great, let down by the gfx card. This is what has wound me up about it. When I got it it was a £850 pc that i did take everywhere, so I actually needed it to be portable. Now I don't need the portability and have a machine i cant upgrade. Looking at selling it and getting a cheap desktop to replace it.
If you don't really need to carry it around to lectures or work then get a desktop.
I have no idea what magazines you have there but theres plenty here that have regular sections on building gaming machines going from budget through to obscene ^^
Agreed. PC Gamer magazine has a section in it that gives you a "low end", "mid end" and "high end" builds for machines. Great price ranges, always with updated hardware.

Lol easy as making pie?..well i can put toghether a pc, but a pie?..no id explode something
It's more like putting together legos If it fits then it goes there.. if it doesn't fit look for someplace else to plug it in.
...yeah....I can't bake either.... I just thought it would have been a decent saying to throw in there.. lol
Now, legos on the other hand..

A good gaming laptop, capable of running AoC lagless (at medium settings) would run you a pretty penny, I haven't looked it up but maybe aroudn 2 grand. A similar desktop would cost half a much.
Unless you are:
A) A Businessman
A truck driver
C) Someone who is barely ever home
A gaming laptop is a waste of money. Ask yourself this question: "Would I ever use it like a desktop (plugged in and sitting on a desk constantly) for more than a week or so at a time?" If the answer is yes, then your best bet would be a desktop for gaming and maybe a less expensive laptop for the road.
You also have to remember, upgrading a laptop is hell. Especially stuff like video cards. RAM isn't an issue, the cards are. It's nearly impossible to do it without proper training and the proper parts. Which means once it's out of date, you will probably end up buying a whole new machine. Is it really an investment you want to make?
Building your own PC is very easy, the hardest part is buying the parts, and installing the motherboard and processor. Everything else is easy as LEGOs. All the parts are keyed and you would really have to be kind of stupid to screw it up. Really, if you screw up anything other than the proc or mobo installationg (the only two that aren't keyed slots) you probably should be using a computer If it doesn't fit, look somewhere else. If it doesn't fit anywhere, make sure it's a computer part. If so, check online. There's enough rescources that you'd be very safe.

Working on a very tight budget here (selling a gaming laptop now, the only real way to upgrade them).

Desktops are what you need for gaming for the simple fact that they can be upgraded, the newest games always are being based on the newest graphics card and in a year you will wish you could stick in a new card for the latest builds. The only reason to get a laptop for gaming is if you have a job that makes you travel, etc.
