So I was reading up on Darkfall (seems the nda has been lifted) and this game seems to be a major hardcore pvp game. Im not sure about everyone but I know a large majority of people bought AoC because of pvp and the "unique" (cough! cough!) combat system.
Now if that holds true today how many more players will leave for Darkfall from AoC? If Darkfall turns out to be a winner, this could be the last nail in the coffin for Funcom.

Available videos of Darkfall on the net shows design and animations of what you would expect from a game released in the beginning of thei decade, but rendered with todays screen resolution, texures and effects.
DF is labeled as a sandbox game, I think it will be for the most hardcore mmoers..
What I read about Darkfall, it seems that most people agree on that the pvp is pretty good while pve sucks big time. This is good news because I was worried that the pvp would be a failure.
I don't give a crap about pve so Darkfall just might be a game for me. I will propably preorder it and finally uninstall this boring game called Age of Conan.
Darkfall has many interesting features that's for sure, and yes it is a hardcore PvP game. However looking at the things people have complained about in AoC and I don't think Darkfall will suit majority of the AoC players. Darkfall PvP sounds both yay and naym features as full loot is interesting and a cool effect to PvP. But seeing the amount of AoC players who want meaningful items I doubt Darkfall will be their game. Darkfall is quite possibly even less centered towards gear then AoC, and since you can loose it people will have to buy/regrind new gear on regular basis.
The FPS elements sounds interesting, the only issue I can see with this is that if they didn't do it properly the combat system will be horrible. I guess I will try DF some month down the road when they have fixed the most problems. So far things looks ok, but they do for sure have some things they need to get right. Being a game with full loot I do hope they have managed to prevent exploiting as much as possible.
Darkfall will not be a conan killer, nor a WAR killer. the players still left in both those games will probably have an interest in dfo and some will test it out, but as said the game and it's features won't suit majority of AoC players. Reason is simple, people whine about not enough content etc. they will be in for a shock when they find out DFO has as good as no content other then what players make out of the world themselves.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
Given the so far business practices of Adventurine (the company developing DarkFall), I do not see Funcom in any trouble. Graphically, it doesnt compare to AoC. AoC also will keep its hardcore fans and it will still do well, as Vanguard has kept afloat by hardcore fans. In the world of WoW, all games end of being niche games kept afloat by hardcore fans. Darkfall in my eyes still have a long way to go to show me it even can support all the features it claims to have
It's funny how people still think it's the graphics that players want in an MMO.
Age of Conan has had nice graphics since day one. What happened? Well.. 90% of players QUIT even though graphics were awesome. Remember, kids like pretty things like graphics, adults like gameplay and content.
Most AoC players are pvp players so AoC is bound to lose some players to Darkfall. Will Darkfall kill AoC? I don't think so. AoC committed a slow suicide back in July 2008.

If DFO can deliver the promised feature list that game can be very good, however if they fail to do so I expect them to go the same way AoC went once people found out features and content wasn't working as planned.

Funny how you didnt quote my comment about features. Yes, gameplay is more important than graphics, but I wont play a game that isnt visually pleasing and from what I have seen of DF, it isnt. DF has claimed this huge feature list, and from all I hear, they have failed to deliver on most of it. DF is being rushed out, will be in worse shape than Vanguard was on its release

I agree with oyu in some ways gameplay is more important then graphic alone. However I also like immersion and things that breaks immersion for me is badly designed things, the animations in DFO does look utter shite. And if they also fail on deliver the features they promised which all looks really nice then it is safe to say DFO won't be a interesting game to jump on. Also the main reason I ain't going to pre order the game.
Broken content and missing features will be the bane of DFO if you look at how people reacted to AoC and WAR's missing features and content.

Again with your 90% assumption. Find some proof before you keep spitting that all over the board.
How it wil laffect it is quite simple: some may go try it, and find its worse than AoC at launch. Others will research a little and find out that its worse than AoC at launch. Most will be very happy with AoC and dont need to experiance another AoC launch. The rest dont care or simply wont win the lottery to get into the alpha. I mean game.
Playing polished, lag free, feature complete games is carebear. Whining about a game you hate but still play is hardcore man!
I am going in for Darkfall but if it turns out tobe crap either WAR or AOC I will start
Actually i never wanted to leave AOC , but after few month sI started getting constant lag of 4K + , Tried everything mentioned on forums including various GMS tried to help nothing worked
Actually all the reviews say that the Darkfall client is extremely stable and the pvp is fun. Something you cannot say about AoC. Age of Conan client was crap and pvp is mediocre so I'm predicting Darkfall will have a much better launch than AoC.
Darkfall is that it's niche game for hardcore pvp'ers. AoC is a niche game for graphics nuts. Neither game will ever achive big subscription numbers.

Darkfall has a stable client? I wonder what reviews you are reading because I am constantly hearing the UI is crap and the client crashes often. As for PvP, that is very mixed. Some say it is great, some say it is horrible and blotchy.
Darkfall will have a horrible launch because the game is not ready to go live yet. Also take into account the pathetic business practices and the veil of secrecy that DF still has over it even with the NDA lifted. Nearly 8 yrs and the game still doesnt even come close to what they were advertising.
Hating on AoC is fine, it did have a bad launch and it doesnt come close to what was promised, but DF is lining up to be even a bigger bomb than AoC and Vanguard was. 8 years of hype and this flushing is all they have to show for it. This game's current conditions is alpha at best
Yea, there are all kinds of reviews but most of them are crap.
Here is one review I like: www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/223946/DARKFALL-Beta-Review-Buyer-Guide-Long.html. He sounds pretty professional and honest. He says:
"-CLIENT: Excellent
It never crashes, I tested around 20 MMORPG, this one is the best I tested, Aventurine wasn't lieing on that, well done AV."
Seems to work pretty well for him. Maybe negative reviewers have different system specs or something?
I agree that Darkfall will not be even close to what some fanbois expect it to be. But it could still be a good pvp game, who knows? We will see in about a month.
Also you have to realize that AoC was in absolutely horrible state just a few weeks from launch. Then they did a "miracle patch" which improved the stability so that they could push that unfinished crap out. Maybe Darkfall will improve too during the following weeks?
PVP in AoC mediocre? Based on what assumptions? Yours? Aren't you the one who quit after ganked a few in tortage?
PVP in AoC is fun and immersive. With the new t3 valley it adds the meaning and the valley is something I haven't seen in a while in MMO. It feels more like a FPS map- When i first got in I got a feeling of 300. (not the movie- movie sucked )
As for PVP in DF- Watched few movies and almost fell asleep. Go watch them and honestly tell me you think it is great
I played in Darkfall BETA a week ago and I am safe to say that DF will not influence AoC in any way. For thats DF is simply too much of a low quality product (graphic wise, control wise) - its really more for the absolute hardcore mmoers who can live with ridiculous bad animations and character control and just wants a bit back of the great game Ultima Online. And believe me one thing DF is not near the quality of even most free MMORPGs out - its ridiculous to charge and release this game in its current stage for 50€ now...
Currently playing: Archeage
Waiting for: Black Desert
Won't change it for me; even if I don't stick with AoC, I'm not interested in a gankfest game.
I'll be certainly interested in how it does, though. Seems like the forums are teeming with uber-733t players who are "sick of the carebear MMO developer mentality" and want to see a no holds barred game.
I haven't been over there to check out the forums. Are there lots of the inevitable "lag/imbalance/exploits made me lose-this game suxxors!" posts, yet?
I was curious about this myself. Having been in DF Beta and still in I was just wondering how it would effect AoC lol. DFO ,right now, is far more stable than AoC was 3 months after launch. It's running in Debug mode which makes this a bit funny to many of us. The PvP has meaning, which was one of my big beefs with AoC when I played and I know many others had the same problem. AoC PvP just lacked meaning. The way they decided to correct this was with PvP xp ......... which of course made some of us cancel and uninstall, I did not say many, or most, I simply said some.
Graphics, oh the Graphics............ Yes AoC wins in Char models, but not by as much as some like to try and imply. Where DFO smacks AoC down graphic wise is with the World. You don't have to agree with me, doesn't matter but I like DFO's world a lot more than AoC's. DX10 may have made all the difference, who knows. I don't, I left lol. But from having played both DFO and AoC, DFO wins for me.
More stable, No instances (WOot), PvP with meaning, Guild vs Guild in a meaningful way (Yeah DFO just crushes AoC in this department hands down), and so on.
I am just compairing my experience from DFO and AoC, DFO I have been in beta for awhile, AoC I played from launch to 3 months after launch. Just so you know where my perspective comes from.
I hear a lot has changed in AoC, I am glad. Hope you guys are having as much fun as I am lol.
We need to also note, WAR and AoC has proven that if you do not launch with a strong PvE system in place, the PvP will only keep the ADD enchanted for so long.
A game needs many facets to make it worthwhile...especially for a monthly fee. Darkfall does not deliver on this with it's "Sandbox" mentality, and making your own game as you play mechanics...
This is why I think Funcoms focus on getting content out before DX10 for example...smart move...more content equals happy players..
Darkfall will be lost with it's indie visual quality that looks like it is from 1997 and the "make up your own game mechanics" playstyle.
Cheers
1997? But the enviroment looks better than AoC's. Does that make AoC from 1995? Oh wait thats right, AoC has marginaly better Char models. Aside from that PvE in DFO is more challenging than any PvE I experienced in AoC. So good thing the PvE is better in DFO lol. Not to mention the PvP.
So take that for what you will.
I have played Both, have you?

As we can both state, these are personal opinions.
When I watch this video of DF, I see Warhammer Online
http://www.darkfalling.com/video-darkfall-landscapes
Basically Darkfall will be like LOTRO, beautiful landscapes and crappy characters. Some areas in screenies even look like EQ2 zones...It is uneven.
When I see these, I see a landscape that reminds me of the Hyborian landscapes ala RE Howard...

And I get cool looking characters to boot!
We each have our own opinion, and the overall package for Darkfall does not work for me!
Cheers

I know, it's all about personal opinion. I couldn't stand the AoC landscapes myself. First time I saw a plant turning as I walked around it as it were some 2D object trying to keep me from noticing it was , even while on Max settings lol, kind of let me know what I was in for in AoC , enviroment wise. AoC can make a decent picture, but it doesn't translate well to film so to speak lol. Which is fine if you like it, just not my tasts. DFO just feels more alive to me I guess.
To each there own, I would link video's and screenies that I based my opinion on like you have but, I based my opinion on playing both instead sorry.
A good quote belongs here...
"It is all in the presentation"
If Coca-Cola came in a Brown colored can with no lettering, would you really want to pay for that? If your new car came with a dull body instead of a shiny body, would you pay full price for that?
i understand your concept of "I did not play it"...but, I HAVE played LOTRO, and it sucked, played WAR, and it sucked...I mean, hype only gets you so far..
But, I need to be sold on a product before I pay for it. Just like a movie, if the reviews are mediocre or even bad, but I am interested...then I will wait for it on DVD or get it free somewhere..
Too bad I cannot do that with DF, so I can only base it on what I see...
I see nothing worthwhile in DF.

Hmm, It really isn't all in the presentation. Haven't you heard, "There's no truth in advertising". This was made blatantly clear by AoC and FC. My advice is to try something before passing judgement. The only reviewer worth listening to is yourself.
But, hey you don't have to take my advice. It really isn't any skin off my nose. And I am not by any means trying to encourage pre-ordering. I would wait for a free trial. I personaly already had mine and well I will be pre-ordering lol.
Secondly, how does playng LoTRO give you perspective on DFO? Just trying to understand the relavence lol.
In any case don't stress yourself mate. If you don't want to play, then by all means don't lol. I am not trying to persuade you. My points were mainly there for others reading our little back and forth. It was to put into perspective while you and others have said don't judge AoC because it has changed and you haven't played it. You are judging DFO before ever playing it. Just wanted that perspective to pop out at the reader.
I have played Both and have evaulated both. I find AoC to have better char models but, thats it. For me, personaly, DFO wins, in graphics, gameplay, and in combat and in mechanics. But that is my personal opinion. You seem to enjoy AoC which is perfectly fine. Again I hope you are having as much fun in your game as I am in mine.
Age of Conan lived throught the Launch of WAR, WoWLK, and it will DF.
It is a different game just the same as AoC is to the other two in that first line. People will try it out forsure but nearly all will be back. I think the game is not going to be what everyone expected. You see with WAR I clearly stated it was my opinion before release that people will get bored with it's repetitive nature after a month or two, we have seen evidence of some of these people posting right here that they are back in AoC.
Same thing will happen with DF players, not all but a lot. How many times will it take them to get pissed off enough that they lost all their gear and have to start over / cost in expenses. It takes a special person who can live through that several times. Unless you just alt + f4 out the game and you will never loose lol. Anyway, there will be a small percentage trying it out of course. I bet they will be back.
The effect will be minimal as DF hasn't got the marketing know how.
