You got a reaction from a fan, do I need to post it again? Whoever uses the wording rabid fans isn't capable in my eyes of making an unbiased review. The same if he would say "stupid trolls" or something to that account.
There is nothing wrong with calling people rabid fans. It doesn't carry a heavy negative connotation, and if not used in a negative tone just describes a person's zealous nature about a particular thing. TBH I don't think I've ever seen a " normal " fan of DF anywhere, and it seems to always go towards the absolute extreme. Its not a bad thing that it turns out that way, but it just means that the information that gets spread around is always polar, and makes it hard for anyone to figure out which is more credible.

Great review. There is more information in that review, then I have seen 8 years of development, and 1 month of betaleaks. Although there were some good betaleaks they were not written as clearly as this review.

As I said, you can't trust either a fanboy or a troll to give an unbiased report. Had I seen him writing about "vaportrolls" or "haters", I would call him a fanboy. I've read "rabid fans", I call him a skeptic (or a troll according to other people).

Jokes aside though it was a good read and up to a point i could actually relate to some things the guy saw while playing since it's pretty much what i saw however he played far more than i did and went the extra mile in every aspect of the game thus providing a good read with several valid points for anyone that wishes to play the game needs to know
I think I've played the game as much as this reviewer. He posted an accurate picture, but not nearly a full picture.
It sounds like he's someone that went solo, hit a few goblins, ran the world and never grouped.
Combat is very fun, and challenging if you face an even decent opponent. Against NPC's you can just stand there and whack them, but real opponents don't sit still. Even the NPC's do move, and the harder NPC's will leave one guy shooting arrows and the other fighting. There is way more challenge than he makes out.
Shields and blocking don't work against the quicker NPC's solo. Shields vs arrows, magic and harder hitting NPC's when you're in a group make the fight. by equipping a shield and getting close you block 75% of the damage. If you're in a group of two you can let one person tank with a shield while the other damages the mob. This is the only way two people can kill some NPC's outside of using pathing glitches and such, which do exist occassionally. The very best way to beat a polearm is to use a shield and 1hs.
The world, while empty two weeks ago is filling up, and the devs said they're holding back a lot of NPC's till launch. The world is pretty empty, but it's not so empty as all that even now.
Crafting is boring, but so is crafting in every game I've tried, and I've tried a lot. I wish it was better, but it's still click and mix. Combat is faster as you level up and get faster weapons.
Archery is a blast, it's FPS like, but still a blast. The damage seems balanced to me, giving slightly higher damage, but making it very hard to hit someone that's aware that you're shooting at them. You both have to target them and allow for arrow travel time.
The server has never crashed in all the time I've played, not one time. I've never had my character rolled back, and I've only seen lag one time, even though they said to expect it because the debug feature is on.
If you don't want to try the game, then don't. I'd bet the reviewer will be trying it as much as he bashed the game.

I played some with a group, and quite a bit solo. It didn't really change the fun-factor of the game for me much, except for the basic level of entertainment provided by social interaction.
Maybe it's my FPS roots, but I just don't find the melee combat challenging in any situation, and even if I did, it would still be inherently *shallow* combat, with few variables to take into consideration. Melee PvP is a bit like knife fighting in Counterstrike (except it takes longer).
Shields do work well in groups, but my major gripe about blocking is that it just isn't very fluid. That can be said about combat in general - it's just clunky. It doesn't *feel* like a battle, really, so much as just exchanging blows.
The world has been filling up, but the mobs go in predictable places. You can already tell where the mobs will go, even if it's presently empty. Ruins, blocks of buildings in the middle of no where, etc. There are still VAST swaths of land that just have nothing in them. I've never had a problem finding mobs, but I wouldn't have the slightest bit of difficulty completely avoiding anything even remotely hostile while traveling from one side of the continent to another. I wouldn't even feel unsafe putting autorun on and going to grab a smoke, most of the time.
I'm not sure what you're on about regarding no server crashes. This has been true for about the last week to a week and a half now, and it's probably the most-improved aspect of the game thus far, as right out of the gate it was going down 6-7 times in a given evening.
As it stands right now, I definitely won't be pre-ordering. I'm not giving up hope entirely, but I was really, sincerely hoping they'd opt to push it back another month or two and get it right the first time.

I can agree with the wishing to push it back for another month or two, simply because I want the beta to continue lol. Other than that I have to disagree. There really isn't a reason to hold it off any longer. Theres a bit more polish that could be done, but nothing game breaking is wrong. It's mostly just simple things.
I don't understand the issue with combat, yeah it could be tweaked a bit but it is a ton of fun for me atleast. It rewards the skilled and punishes the unskilled. Blocking was tweaked not that long ago actually fixing the issue's most of us were complaining about making it actually useful. There will be mob camps, but do not forget that there will be non static mobs at launch. This was stated by the devs repeatedly. I guess you didn't read the forums much, but thats understandable. I have a hard times hanging out in the forums vs playing myself. I am only here now because I am attempting to pre-order and the server is bombarded by people trying so it's taking forever lol.
As it stands right now I will be pre-ordering. The few things that need work are minor. It's far more polished in beta than just about any other MMO I have played at launch. AoC was far far far worse 3 months after launch than DFO is right now in beta, in debug mode. The game is a great deal of fun, challenging and can be a bit addictive lol.
DFO isn't for everyone though, some just won't get it, The combat takes more skill than there use to, it may be a bit to harsh or they simply may not like it. So yeah, it's a niche game not made for everyone.
While I don't thinkl everyone should pre-order it I do think you guys should give it a try. You could be presently surprised.
In the end it doesn't matter what I or anyone else says. The only reviewer you can trust is yourself.

Skill ! = circle strafing and clicking the left mouse button. The slow pacing of the game really strips away any real requirement for player skill. Helen Keller could probably land 90% of her swings if she were a DFO player.
Hmm, the fanbois are really steering clear of this thread, while vocally posting on any thread that has a positive review. I think I'm going to wait until I see some feedback from people who have no vested interest in the game (i.e, they just went out and bought it, and weren't graced with access to the beta) I still suspect beta invites were frequently granted on the basis of being a "friend of Darkfall" and not so much as a random process. Well, its only one opinion, and I'll be reading more I'm sure.
Well I've never played the game but I was reading posts from BETA testers on Forumfall earlier and the results are NOT impressive.
Forumfall beta testers were the most rabid fans Darkfall had and almost ALL their reviews are entirely negative.
Aye defiantly one of the best reviews so far, not because it said anything really new but because it nicely summarised everything for people who had been watching carefully beta leaks vids (especially if they had some decent experience mmos and knew how to look past the OMG shines) and reading other beta reports.
It was finally what made decide not to play DFO

That's actually Aventurine's own fault, they have been constantly comparing themselves to UO since day one, pretty much painting themselves as its successor. This can still be seen on their web site by they advertised game features (which seriously needs to be totally redone, majority of stuff on there that they say will be in game will not be at all or in a vastly cut down manner).
If they had not done this and just stuck to a just another pvp mmo self promotion method they would probably not have so many people upset at them as people would be getting what they expected (though even then people looking for pvp that is more than hack and run in circles might have been upset)

Shadow, are you denying there are tons of rabid fans for who DFO is the perfect game where nothing is wrong and never will be? Because if you are you need to take the blinkers off and spend 5 minutes on the DFO forums. Hell there have been tons of them even since before beta even started. They are pretty easy to spot too, they are the ones who think pvp+ffa+full loot is all that counts in a MMO and if you dont agree with them you are kiddy carebear that needs to go back to WoW or hello kitty online.
Funny thing is they are also the types that will probably destroy the game by sitting ganking and greifing newbies all day long day in day out untill Aventurine do something about, exactly as happened with UO
I need a new MMO world to call home as Tom Chilton keeps destroying them

funny, that's what all the people who are bad at DF say - "it's not me, it's the melee combat system that's bad". WOW requires "split second decisions" but timing feints and thrusts in DF doesn't?
seriously, you sound like someone who has played DF for 2 days and barely ventured beyond the goblin camps.
the most revealing thing was saying the AI is bad. it's so much better than any other MMO out there it's not funny, and people who have actually been in the beta awhile know damn well how different the AI is on different mob types.
i'm just amazed you went to so much effort to troll Darkfall. i hope it was worth it for you.

I understand, don't worry. Many that havent managed to get the hang of it try resorting to what you just did. It isn't just about circle strafing and clicking left mouse button. Keep trying and you eventually will get the hang of it. I too was once in your shoes. I had a hard time getting into the grove of things because I was expecting a AoC (Age of Chivalry) type combat system. To my surprise running around circle straffing and clicking LMB worked fine on the gobs but simply got me killed when fighting other players.
Turns out theres a lot more to it. I learned to wear my opponents down, get that stamina low. Make them waste energy. Parry, when it was to my advantage.
Keep at it though and you too will get the hang of it.
I am also going to assume that you didn't realise you can use Duck and jump to your advantage in combat.
Edit: I just read Javac's post above mine and yes he is correct lol.

Could either of you really go into detail about the combat then? I mean.. what does skilled PvP look like?
I'm the kind of player that likes to play as competitively as possible, so having a somewhat tactical combat system is necessary in order to keep my interest; I'd really appreciate a concrete example instead of really vague qualitative stuff that could mean anything.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

Well firstly I wouldn't recomend running around in circles clicking LMB as the OP has. Secondly what play style are you planning on using? Melee, Magic and Archery, what combination and list most important to least important.

Melee/Archery => Archery <= Melee.

If archery is most important than I would recomend you work on magic as well. Reason being there are some very niffty things you can do with archery and magic. There's a spell that knocks an opponent back, same as with the melee skill knockback. Which can be nice for an archer as well as a spell I guess it's levitate? But with it you can get ontop of roofs and other structures as well as get up into tree's. For melee I would go 2 handed axe, as I think thats one of the ones that has the Knockback skill.
So hop up in a tree or on a rooftop and unload on your opponent, if they manage to get up there with you, use either your knockback spell or weapon skill and knock them back down. This will pretty much be your key to success with archery.
For melee I would need to know what melee weapon you would prefer using.
I think this is spot on and a very accurate and comprehensive review of what state the game actually currently is in a few days from launch, but then again I would because I'm a troll vapor hater carebear WoW player after all.
I'm sure in reality its nothing like this whatsoever, that's why I'm pre ordering and I hope you all are too.

Take it from a rabid fanboi cultist tasos-lover, dont preorder the game its obviously crap.
Aventurine cant manage a lagless billing server with only 200 thousand simultanous users,
To be honest I can't make any comment about the review. Is it good? is it true? I haven't played the game, no info has ever been said about the game since they had that anti-marketing NDA policy in place. So Im gonna keep on my stance of play with a ## FREE Trial with no limits and the decide. If they don't give out free trials I wont try this.
This game promises to be different, so a trial with fewer than 14 days will not be enough.
I don't like DF due to many things but that Review was interesting, informative and well written...I do disagree with his everquest statement though, but meh...no biggie.
Probably the most impressive thing about Darkfall, IMO, is that they managed to take so many game play features I like (skill based advancement, FPS play style, full loot, open pvp) and combine them into a game that's so boring to me.

Well I've never played the game but I was reading posts from BETA testers on Forumfall earlier and the results are NOT impressive.
Forumfall beta testers were the most rabid fans Darkfall had and almost ALL their reviews are entirely negative.
Check out the forums there and see for yourself.
They are pretty easy to spot too, they are the ones who think pvp+ffa+full loot is all that counts in a MMO and if you dont agree with them you are kiddy carebear that needs to go back to WoW or hello kitty online.Funny thing is they are also the types that will probably destroy the game by sitting ganking and greifing newbies all day long day in day out untill Aventurine do something about, exactly as happened with UO

Melee/Archery => Archery <= Melee.

Aventurine cant manage a lagless billing server with only 200 thousand simultanous users,
that proves they must have made a bad game.

+ 1 nice review
