After much research, and play various MMOs, I have decided to play this game. However, I have read many posts both here, and on the main EQ site, about classes and races. However each site agrees that the game is now almost 100% different due to expansions. So here I am looking for some kind soul to pitty my noob soul and help me with a couple quests.
--First, which class is best at melee dps. During my free trial I tried out the Assassin and the Zerker, and both were fun. However I like to lean towards having Heavy/Plate armor and a 2 handed weapon, but also wouldn't mind dual wielding. Also, I have never really gotten into a game with dual class system, so which class would compliment the melee class the best?
Summery of above: What is the best melee class? and is it viable in PvP?
--Secondly, is there any difference between good or evil, besides the classes? and which has a higher population.
-- Also, Are there any major differences in races besides the looks? and if so which race is best for melee?
-- Lastly, Does it matter which city I start in? Any buffs or items I receive for playing a certain race, starting in a certain city?
Sorry about all of the noob questions, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

cannot respond to PVP effectiveness because I do not PVP
2h tanker -- try Shadowknight
dual wielding light tanker - try Bruiser/Monk
Race benefits,
at high levels it really does not matter but heres a linked list of different racial abilities

Thankyou for the very helpful information!
I think I have narrowed my choices down to Berserker and Assassin, anyone have any input on the two classes?
Some more tips for you.
If you play on the exchange server, you can buy a fully leveled character so you don't have to deal with the tedium of actually playing.
If you can't find a preleveled character that suits your needs, you can buy experience potions with Stationcash and become maxed out lickety split.
Tentonhammer has class guides
both guides were last updated March 2008

lol, Sounds tempting, but i actually want to lvl a class from start to finish. I am afraid that if I buy a pre leveled char, I will lose interest in the game very quickly. And not know what i am doing.
Berserker - Tank/Dps can use 2 handed weapons, one handed+shield and dual welding, the damage output can be average/high (for a tank) on raids and multiple encounters. In group play you can be main tank, off tank or just DPS, usually people will ask you to tank in instances/dungeons.
Assassin - tier 1 dps, very, very high single target dpser, one of the higher damage outputs in game, with tracker and stealth you can solo pvp (against solo kills) better than the Berserker, but the zerker isnt bad in PvP at all.
As an assassin it would be easier for you to get spots on raid guilds, it will be easier to you to solo hunt in PvP, but you will die faster than the Berserker.
If you really dont want to Tank, the assassin would be a better option, but if you enjoy tanking and the role of a devensive damage dealer, the Berserker is for you.
The ShadowKnight is a fantastic class, but more of a vampiric tank/mage hybrid, melee damage of a berserker is higher than the damage output of a SK (even with harm touch).
About damage output.
t1 assassin/ranger/warlock/wizard
t2 swash/brigand/conj/necro
t3 monk/bruiser/enchanters/dirge/troub
t4 a Berserker/Shadowknight
t4 b Guard/Palad
t5 healers
But keep in mind, a Berserker can top parse in a raid encounter and even a fury can dish a lot of damage...but usually assassin will be top 1 in damage against solo encounters and a Warlock will be top in multi encounter.(not an universal rule)
Take a look into Swashs and Brigand aswell, they are the tank/scouts, something between an assassin and a zerker.
Scouts also have good debuffs plus tracking, you may enjoy it.

I just started playing a Kerra Monk......enjoying it thus far...but still on the island. What is a complementary dual class to play with a monk?
I personally prefer druid with monk
advantages of druid
- heals
- transportation, sow and druid portals (evac with warden, group invis with fury)
- buffs
also I recommend getting off that island (now even) and making a beeline for Timorous Deep

Besides the obvious answer of a healer, particularly a Druid (Warden or Fury), the class that best compliments ANY and ALL melee classes is my main, the Dirge.
Dirge's take a good melee or tank class, and makes them absolutely godly. Dirge's have amazing debuffs which lower the mobs mitigation to physical AND magical dmg, as well as lowering the dmg output of said mob, while at the same time using their awesome buffs to buff Str and Agi, dps, combat skills (slashing, piercing, and ranged), and giving a sweet dmg proc. If you are a melee or tank class, you will be wanting to make friends with a Dirge that knows what he's doing and bring him everywhere with you.
If you were a caster, you would want a Troubador, they do for casters what Dirge's do for melee.

Great!...thanks..timorous deep and druid. Was looking for druid as first choice..so dualed out should work. Again thanks...I'm only 8th level...so I think I'll wander the isle for a bit...don't know if I've missed any quests.
I personally prefer druid with monk...
I would also suggest a mystic/defiler.
Monk tanking and defense is based on avoidance and mystic/defiler ward system work well with avoindance.
Defilers and Mystics are also rare than druids.
Barcrow, if you dont want to tank with your monk, a monk with a conj/necro, or even a monk with a SK/Pally can do good things.

Best melee dps class is by far assasin. SK's are overpowered atm , and they can give huge dps numbers in group encounters. I expect SK's to be nerfed soon. Probably when the fighter revamp hits. Good/evil and racial abilities are mostly fluff, wont make a difference in developing your char. Only real difference you have to take into account is what deity you will follow. Some are only available to good characters or vice versa. So if you wanna follow cazic thule you have to be evil for example.
Not by that much, Swashie is right after if you spec it right.
I do have good gear but it only happened twice that a Assasin same level or close outDPSed my swashie. But Swashie do more AoE while Ass do more on a single target.
