Help a Noob who wants to Play Again

nooffalnooffal Member UncommonPosts: 24

Hi All,

So, I bought the game at launch and maybe lasted a week? At the time, my old PC just didn't cut it and it got too frustrating.

Anyways... I now have an upper-end rig and have heard some great things about how this game has grown over the years.

That being said, I have some newbie questions:

1) Is there a good newbie guide somewhere which I can read?

2) How many expansions are there now? I have the original game from launch, do the I need the other expansions right away to be able to FULLY experience the lower levels or are they mainly for higher levels?

3) Do the expansions add any new races or classes?

4) What is the current state of crafting in the game? Is it fun? What are some good options to pursue?

5) What is a good server to play on? Solid populations with quality guilds/players are always a plus. :)

6) Anything else a noob should know?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi mate,

LOTRO was one of the better MMO's I have played. I no longer play any atm due to real life being rather busy. But LOTRO was fun. And I shall be returning very soon!

    1. Never needed a Noobie guide myself, I think the game sends you in the right directions mostly, and the game community is realyl helpful.

    2. One (1) expansion, "Mines of Moria" ( which if you are a founder only costs you the price of exp and no monthly fee. I am so happy I did that, no more subs for me :) )

    3. Yes, Two (2) new classes. The Warden and Runekeeper.

    4. Crafting is divided. Myself I enjoyed it. I have a maxed Tailor and he has been very useful in making items for himself and others. But some just don't like the crafting at all. Realyl need to try it and see for yourself :)

    5. I play on Elendilmir (probably speltwrong lol) It seems to be the default Oceanic server most players play on and its one of the more populated servers all day long I find.

    6. Go play (don't rush it to max level, lots to see and do whilst leveling)  and enjoy the game, its a beautiful world, and find a decent guild and you can have a ball. Soloing is fine, but myself I enjoy being part of a guild and chatting/adventuring together.

    Cheers

Uhm... small correction... 1 expansion indeed, but that's the one you have to buy. Besides that there have been 6 huge updates to the original game, and I expect a huge amount of these big updates for Mines of Moria as well.

Thinking aboutexpansions... I think there will be 4 more expansions to be bought over time...This because the books are not the 3 you know, but 6 in total... The 2nd book is where the fellowship leaves Rivendel and enters Moria. The Fellowship ends at the Argonauts (Ohh... can't wait to see them in-game one day )

Oh, forgot about rushing... Of course, you never rush a PvE game

When I used the /played command on my 48 champ, I saw he had a total of only 2 weeks total time. I didn't think I missed a thing, though I was only at chapter 5 (of 14 total at the time)... Now with my Rune-Keeper I'll take things slower and read everything, and I hope I'll have the time to do all chapters of the epic quest this time...

I also bought the game at release and put it down after a month.  I didn't have time back at that time to play.  I came back about 2 weeks ago and can't believe how good this game is.  I was recently play WAR but the game was just boring and unplayable to me so I was looking around for an MMO to play.  I hadn't really heard much about the game until I went looking around and I was reading tons of good reviews for this game so I decided to give the trial a go.  A couple days before my trial was over i was lucky to find MoM at Best Buy for only $20.  I bought the game and am now level 27 (Lore-Master).

Anyway I'll try to answer your questions

    1. I believe I saw a couple on the official LOTRO forums so I'd say just search around there

    2. Only Mines of Moria which came out in Nov.  The content is meant for levels 50-60 so you won't need it right away unless you want to play the new classes but it's $30 and comes with a free month (I'm not sure if the digital upgrade comes with a free month but the box version does) so you might as well go ahead and grab it.

    3. Warden (heavy armor, tank, great soloer), and Rune Keeper (healer [not as good as minstel] but can also DPS, light armor)

    4. I don't really know much about crafting.

    5. The highest population server is Brandywine (i play there), and I have found a great guild to play with.  I honestly recommend this server because there are a ton of low level players, and I have found a group for ever group quest thus far except one.

    6. A good kinship definately is nice to have. :)

If you end up playing and play on Brandywine you can send me a tell if you ever need help or anything, my name is Ryanstar.

Thanks for the info everyone! I may indeed look you up on brandywine. Having lots of friendly people to play with is definitely important to me!

I have two more questions, if you guys don't mind:

    1) Can you use the trial client for the full version of the game? Or do I need my DVDs?

    2) What are the top soloing classes?

    1. You can use the trial client for the full game

    2. Champions, Wardens, Hunters, and LM's.  The only one I have played is a LM and with a pet and CC abilities the class can solo quite well.

    Thanks for the answers!

Looking over the other answers, could someone expound a bit more on if the expansion is needed right away?

At lower levels, what exactly do you gain from having the expansion? Are the 2 new classes only available with the expansion? I just am curious if I need to buy the expansion right away or if I can wait until I'm higher level (if so, what level should I have it by?)

    Thanks!

Unless you plan to play the Warden or Rune-Keeper you don't need Moria until around lvl 45-48 when you can start in the Eregion Zone.  You can however lvl to 50 just fine without the expansion and have tons left to do when ya get there.
Just buy the Moria complete edition which includes Shadows, its what $30 I think and you're set!

Thanks for the info! Forgive me, but what is Shadows? I've heard of Mines of Moria, of course, but what is Shadows? I thought there was only 1 expansion?

Thanks for the info. I have the original game from launch, just not the Expac.

Another question which came to mind, how are the RP servers on LOTRO? What is the highest pop/most active one? It's been a long time since I was on a good RP server, may be fun! :)

The highest population server is Brandywine.

I don't believe there are any official RP servers but Landroval is the unofficial RP server.
