IMO immersion is an extremely important aspect for games in this genre. Immersion and atmosphere are what make MMOs living, breathing worlds as opposed video game with pretty scenery. The two features that I refer to in the title are cockpit view and collideable objects (google. Although many (or possibly most) of you may disagree with me on this, these are vital features when considering immersion, and JGE wouldn’t even be on par with it’s predecessor without them.
I’ve read in a forum somewhere at some point that there will be a cockpit view, but that was a while ago; and I haven’t seen anything about ships being destroyed by objects. For all I know both of these features have been implemented already. If so, Yay.
Why am I making a stink about cockpits you ask? I just want to feel like I’m in a ship, not just floating around in nothingness with my handy-dandy UI. Also, the windshield should have glare. I want to feel like there’s something between me and the vacuum.
Why would I want to see my hard earned heavy fighter explode against the side of a space station? I don’t. But I want to see it bounce off harmlessly even less. The realism would be completely lost if we could just bounce off of stations, or even worse: fly right through them ala EVE. I’m not saying they should stick giant roids smack-dab in the middle of a trading route (google: “the reaches” & Emma), but lets have some obstacles to test our piloting skills on darnit.
I loved Jumpgate. I played it for about a year when it was released, and despite hope, I never thought there would ever be a sequel. Now I hope JGE will turn the MMO industry on its head, because the sooner I empty my brain of Dwarves, Elves and Orcs the better.
See the Honeycomb cockpits of Earth and Beyond. Terrible game - great pits.

Yes there is a cockpit view they have just been demonstrating the game in 3rd person.
Yes there is collision detection and hitting a large object will hurt.
Earth and Beyond was a graet game, the best of the space MMO's, but I hope and anticipate JGE will top it.
EnB's cockpit views were nothing special, but I hated them...just like I hate first person RPG's....a lack of peripheral vision does not equal immersion to me.
You didn't just fly through objects on Eve, you bounced off. And there is a JGE video which shows the demonstrator blowing up when he flies into a capitol ship.
I haven't found any screenshots or videos showcasing the cockpit view yet but the devs say you will be able to play 1st person (cockpit) and 3rd person (ship view). I just found two nice videos that i posted on my website that should explain least the collision (especially the 2nd)

This game has better collision than eve, in some of the videos you can see a player HULL SKIDDING along a space station while shooting backwards at his chase target.....

You can also see ships blowing up from crashing into stuff..
And my main point still stands...lack of peripheral vision does not equal immersion to me, thats why 1st person sucks.
There is no real way to make immersion in an cockpit besides maybe 3 screen view so you can see out all sides and that new TrackIR seems nice to set immersion but besides that it is just the cockpit and 3rd person and there is no immersion in 3rd person view. But at least we are not bouncing off things and taking no damage at all. What would have been nice to see is that the shields maybe keep you alive but your ship gets torn up and effects the flying

Guess what, the game supports Matrox and TrackIR.

Not that that is any kind of achievement, to be honest

The way it works now they said is your speed and mass get plugged into a damage formula and then subtracted from shields and armor and if x+y= -1 or less you go boom.
About the cockpit view they plan to have it but it may be like genaric at launch , they said they are focusing their resources to make sure the game performs well, that is more important. If cockpit view is genaric it's fine imo, as long as the game can handle the big space battles they promised. Hell it can't be any worse than JGC and that was a great game.
1. There will be cockpits. They just didnt implement them yet on versions they showed in public
2. Death from collision is bit of a hot issue. ND are still testing it , but it seems (at least judging from last dev chat) that collisions will not be as lethal as in original JG.
This however brought quite of uproar from game fans. So latest word is that there will be a "hardcore" mode where collisions will be deadly like in old JG
I am not hell bent on a cockpit view. But I would like a good 1st person view with all of my ship systems display. That would probably be the mode I play in anyway. I have never really like 3rd person when flying. I wish I could afford the multi display setup at the house but i cannot I want them to concentrate on gameplay and server stability as well. I want to see a 100+ person dogfight that will be something to watch and participate in.

In Freelancer all npcs flying around would be heard on radio chatting.
That greatly helped the immersion.
