Is Darkfall really a Sandbox?
Don't get me wrong. I don't wanna bash the game.
I'm just not sure if its worth my time.
Afaik there is no Housing and crafting is medicore.
Not sure how the Economy is working in DF.
I know the game is not level based and has a non linear open World (and thats a good thing), but thats not enough to call it a sandbox in my opinion.
I will not say that a sandbox game needs housing (check eve)
but a sandbox game must have more options then "just" fighting, exploring and a medicore crafting system
So if you allready have played DF tell me if you would call it a sandbox and why.
Please don't use this thread to hype or bash the game!
Thanks & feel free to bash me for my english
Have fun!

I think the main thrust of the game is FFA pvp with full loot (I think the "full" part is correct?).
that is why someone would play darkfall in my opinion regardless of the sandbox features or how fully implemented they are.
Players are getting the wrong idea about this game as some are complaining about graphics or completely polished interfaces.
It's a brutal pvp game pure and simple. If you like that then that is what you'll get with this game.
Oh, and your English is fine

Sandbox is a feature and not a type of game.
Sandbox: A feature that allows the player to roam and interact with the environment while ignoring the plot or story line.
If it fits that requirement then DF does have the " sandbox " feature. Skills, housing, and other game mechanics have nothing to do with " sandbox ", but are normally offered with games that come with a " sandbox " feature.
Thanks but i think i know what a sandbox is .... and what a game has to offer (call it features or possibilities etc.) has alot to do with it ...
Sandbox = Hunting.
You ever heard that when playing recent mmo's ? Let's go hunt ? No ? Cause most MMO's today are not sandbox, they are quests driven. You level up by doing quests.
A sandbox game has quests but the whole gaming experience is NOT driven by them. Most of the time you just run around and hunt monsters for xp and loot.
The only true sandbox game i played was Asheron's Call. Sandbox only means you do what you want. In most MMO you are forced to quest to level up, in a sandbox game you are not forced to do anything but what you want.
From the current beta state, I'd say no. Darkfall is a PvP FFA full loot game, and that's about it. Very little thought has been placed on the other aspects of gaming.
In some areas yes... DarkFall is sandbox. In other areas... no it is not sandbox.
Sandbox to me means full freedom. Freedom to do what I want, when I want to do it.
Can I attack and kill NPCs in DarkFall.... NO
(They are magically protected. Even enemy NPCs are off limits).
Can I place a house where I want... NO
(Your clan must build in one of the 97 locations that the Devs have pre-determined. You must build a bank first. You must place the building in their pre-determined location in your city/hamlet. Housing is only for increasing the bind stone number).
Can I choose to play any race and not be penalized for attacking other races... NO
(For that ability you MUST play Alfar... all other races have built in, pre-made, cannot be changed allies. If you attack them... you WILL be penalized. No exceptions).
Can I pick and choose what spells I want to level... NO
(You must level up Minor Magic first. Then level up Greater Magic next. Then pick the path you want to level next. Depending on what path you choose... you will not be able to learn certain spells).
For me those areas above are not Sandbox. Do they make DarkFall a bad game, or disqualify it from being called sandbox. No.
They are the choices that the Devs. made for whatever reason. Their choice, as it's their game. I would have liked more freedom... but it wasn't my decision.
thats a korean grindfest, not sandbox. in those types of games ,youre forced to grind mobs endlessly to level up so its the same thing without a weak story element about needing 10 bear heads for blankets or whatever.
of course, these types of games also attract bots, macroing and farmers as the xp and loot is linked to mindlessly grinding mobs. there is no need to report back to the quest giver or to hand in any quest items. nor do you need to search out other quests or travel to another hub.
Quick question for all you hooligans, in Darkfall if I am caught scamming another player or a player reports me for scamming are there any repructions? Will I get in trouble?
Sandbox is one of those terms that means many things to many people. Some may argue that open-world PvP and full-loot constitutes a Sandbox, while others would argue only a game with a player-driven economy and player housing could be considered a Sandbox. I tend to lean toward the latter.
Thanks xzyax your answer was very helpful!
