Need a new RPG, been out of the game for awhile.

I have only actively played three MMO's in my lifetime. Asheron's Call, Asheron's Call 2, and DAoC.

Asheron's Call made up about 90% of this time. I even returned a couple months back but the game is not populated enough for me to even enjoy myself anymore.

I just picked up a descent gaming computer and am looking to begin another RPG. I was originally set on Darkfall, but all these problems seem to have me rethinking the decision.

-PvP, Population, and Depth are the three things that really matter to me in an MMO. Make some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Are you PVP or PVE or a bit of both? If you like the PVE then LOTRO or Vanguard might do you fine. Vaguard for me is the better game but it has a lower population manily on the euro server called halgar.

    Try it and see..vanguard.station.sony.com/isleofdawn/

I have buddy keys for AOC/LOTRO/Vanguard.

You don't give much to go on, so I'm going to say Guild Wars.

Depends what you like, but looking at what you've played I'd say...

Paid - Warhammer if you like PvP, LotRO if you like PvE and can make enough friends. EVE if you like your scifi...

FTP - Runes of Magic is alot like WoW with PvP (lootable corpses) and pretty good crafting.

Runes of Magic has intrigued me and with the current free trial I may give a go and see how I like it.

To give a little more information, I need a game with both PvE and PvP to keep me interested. There needs to be some form of PvE that progresses my character to in turn become a better PvP. I do not, however, want a game in which I must spend multiple hours daily grinding in dungeons to be competitive.

I'd also like to steer clear of any click combat. I'd like something with a bit more of a combat interface than AC had. Something where I have to pay attention and can't just hit a key to start attacking then watch TV for 30 sec until the critter is dead and repeat.

Outside of WoW, which so clearly dominates the market, what games have good active populations in which I wont have trouble finding a group to hunt with as well as PvP with (or against).

If ease of finding a group is your criterion, then Guild Wars is probably the best there is.  While Guild Wars doesn't have as big of a playerbase as WoW, it is in the next tier of games that might plausibly have the second largest (American) playerbase.  It still gets a little shy of 100k new paid account activations per month, and is closing in on 6 million active accounts, though a large fraction of that latter figure has probably since quit.  The game doesn't charge a monthly fee, so once you've bought an account, it remains active forever.

But the key to Guild Wars grouping is not merely that it has a lot of players, but that it doesn't subdivide them to prohibit you from grouping with all but a tiny fraction like so many other games do.  Apart from the newbie areas in easy mode, everyone in the game will be of a suitable level for whatever content it is that you wish to do.

There aren't separate servers in the sense common to many other games; there are separate districts for different languages, but you can freely transfer between those in a few clicks.  Instead of saying, you can only group with people on your particular server, everyone on American servers wishing to group for, say, Dzagonur Bastion is put in the same place to make it easy to find each other.  If there are too many such people, it opens additional districts, but lets you transfer between them in a few clicks.

If that's not enough, you can also fill out your group with henchmen or heroes, that is, AI party members.  If you're looking for a group and have six players in your group, but need two more healers, you're not stuck spamming advertisements for healers and competing with other groups doing the same.  Instead, you can simply bring two AI healers and start--or the same with any other class.

You might give RoM a try.  It is a good little game and is actually much better than alot of the Monthly Fee games out there.  It has the same feel as alot of the MMOs out there today and it certainly doesn't seem too groundbreaking, but it has a nice Dual Class system and the crafting is more in depth than most of the games out there.  It does have a WoW/WAR/AoC/LotRO feel to the questing, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing in my book.  It isn't a "sandbox" game, but it has an active modding community and the people playing are fairly friendly and helpful.  I have seen my share of immature players, but no more than in WoW or any of the pay to play games.  The PvP is active and pretty well done also.

Best of all, it is free...  So all you really have to invest is the time to download before you can see if you like it.

You might want to look into the relaunch of Face of Mankind. If population is one of your main concerns, this game has a very dedicated and active community. Almost everywhere you go there is someone new to meet. While the previous version of the game didn't have near as many players as your great MMO's like guild wars, the game was more focused so I felt as if I was a part of a community where I could build a reputation. FOM has a wealth of role playing as well as in game features such as faction missions, in game role play events, an active market, and a great production system. Once you join one of the eight factions you can fight for colonies and engage in politics. As for PVP, the game has either a first person or third person platform that is perfect for fights that mimic those of a FPS. I hope you don't take this as a sales pitch or anything. The game is epic and is nothing like anything I have played before. I actually found this game after Guild Wars began to nerf things and get boring. In advance, this game is addicting and it has a giant fan base waiting for its relaunch after the publisher trouble it had two years ago. Though it is only in closed beta, the game creators are letting alot of people test it out. I hope you look into it. Good Luck with whatever you end up finding.

PS.. They are going to offer free accounts this time around.

    hi mr fresh

as to your demands: if you prefer f2p, you can choose shadow of legend. i'm playing this now, so many things to explore like crafting questing in huge maps, its open pvp is very funny, can be done personally or in guilds. castle seige is so much fun, guilds vs guilds is very exciting . running in arena also earns a lot. and it's keeping updating now with new experience offered to players.

if you are ready to spend, i also recommend warhammer cuz it's really playable. large population in this game makes it more funny, the questing and crafting are also very good. and it's as well doing update.

both worth trying hope you enjoy them lol
