Ok, while it's not a MMORPG in the traditional sence, Monster Hunter (for PS2), definitely plays like an MMORPG, and a very superb one at that.
You choose your world (server), then area (red, green, or blue). In each area, there are many towns, each holding up to 8 players. Towns are used for trading, upgrading equipment, combining and storing items, and meeting with other players to go on a quest. You have a buddy list so you can see what town your friends are in. The chat is all done with a keyboard and goes out to your chat window. This game just has the "feel" of an MMORPG.
It is an awesome game and anyone who has a PS2 should not miss it. If there's enough interest here, I'll post a more in-depth review.

Tyvel,
I got the demo on a free CD that came with the Oct 2004 issue of Computer Gaming Magazine.
Monster Hunter is not a MMORPG. It is closer to the same type of game as Diablo 2.
You yourself said it when you admit only 8 players at a time can be on the same server/in the same game world.
A MMORPG is a game -
1. That needs an internet connection. It must be played online.
2. Allows massive amounts of players to be online at the same time, in the exact same gameworld. Current, modern MMORPGs (including the "wimpiest" mom and pop ones) allow at minimum 5,000 or more players.
A certain famous game DEV once mentioned in a famous post that 500 players can start to be considered a "massive" amount of players. (He went on to say that's why Meridian 59, and Realm Online, fit the definition of MMORPG and are considered the first ever ones.)
3. The gameworld continues even while the player logs off.
Monster Hunter with its 8 players per server does not fit the definition. And it looks like the servers vanish when all 8 players log off.... a-la Diablo 2 style. I personally like Monster Hunter, and would consider buying it. The Demo is NICE. But it is not a MMORPG. Not even close. It can be called a ORPG. Or even an OG. (Online Game. Not much room for role-playing seems possible in it.)

xplororor,
I agree that Monster Hunter is not a MMORPG, but the reason why I categorized it as such is because it plays so much like one. People who like MMORPG's are likely to be interested in this game. Rather than just a chat interface where you find other people to game with, the interface is setup to feel like one massive world. You can easily find your friends and jump from town to town.
Mobs and quests "respawn" (you don't see that in Diablo). There are lots of emotes and other fun RPG stuff (sit down in the Tavern and hit buttons to see all the humorous actions). There are many beneficial things to do besides kill: mine, fish, forage, catch bugs, cook. Put simply, this is not your typical "hack-n-slash" aka Diablo. Although it does contain all the good elements of that game, it adds tons of new, groundbreaking stuff thats never been done (or done so well) in a game.

Wow, after reading this post I am very interested in Monster Hunter. I don't have a PS2, unfortunately
Is there a PC version? or will there be one soon? I have thought about buying a PS2 when Champions of Norrath came out and a few other PS2 only games were released, but I have an Xbox, and my PC is still the priority and where I play most of my games.
Monster Hunter sounds like fun.

Monster Hunter is fun off-line, but if you don't play on-line you're missing out on a lot of the best parts of the game. A lot of the really big Wyverns, Dragons, Sea Serpents, and other creatures almost require team play to take down. I can't imagine solo'ing them but I suppose it might be possible. The creatures are also a lot easier offline so that should help (they have a lot less health).
By the way Monster Hunter is also a very in-depth game with a high learning curve. Like MMORPG's you'll want to play it for hundreds of hours to get to see and do everything the game has to offer.
The official website is a good source of information on the game: http://www.capcom.com/monster

A lot of people are comparing this game to PSO, but those who have played both say the only real similarity is that you're getting together with a group of 4 online. They all agree: MH > PSO by a long shot.
