I have an open slot to make a new person and I want to explore the type of alt who makes things from blueprints and such. ANy advice on how to set up such a career from scratch like what race, class, school, etc to choose from and where to go from there.

Well you could check the skills you plan to train and see what attributes the skill use to train. Then use a chart like this to pick a character that has attributes geared toward those skills. Basically, If most of the skills you want to train use willpower as a primary attribute select a race, class, ect that is high in willpower.
