Robes for Magic users.

One thing I have noticed from DF is that there arent alot of clothes/robes option for magic based characters.   Are there clothes/robes in game?  If so, how do you make them or where are they found?  I have never been fond of wearing armor in the past and i would like to see more options added for unarmoed folks.

Man, are you going to be dissapointed. :(

Robes and such are in, I believe; but they leave you at a severe disadvantage. Just about everyone is going to aim for the biggest pieces of armor they can find, as the penalties for wearing them are practically nonexistant, making anything of lesser build to be relegated to uselessness.

You can craft them and they also can be looted off mobs. You can even wear a robe over your plate armor to hide your gear.

For a game that was built around giving freedom to the players you would think that they would have some variety in how you gear yourself.  Do any robes offer magical attributes or other things that could potentially offset some of the disadvantages?

I will wear armor if i absolutely have to but i just think its kinda gay they would pigeonhole everyone into wearing heavy armor.

Well, the variety is there, but the disparity between advantage/disadvantage just isn't large enough to warrant anyone wearing anything other than heavy stuff. This is just one of those balance issues that's likely to be addressed. You should have seen Beta no longer than three weeks ago - weapons also lacked that disparity, so there was no reason to use anything other than two handed swords. They addressed that by introducing much needed swing speeds and such. From then on, we all saw combat improve by leaps and bounds.

We should hope armor is the next thing to be tweaked. I don't like being optimistic, 'cause lets face it, all the cool kids gotta bring a brotha down and all; but I do think they'll address this issue. They've generally been pretty decent about addressing gameplay issues such as these, even if they do it from within their Ivory Tower of Silence.

I have seen robes with amazing secondary resistances (fire/acid/arcane/etc.) which could be useful vs. magic once most people have finished their skill sets.  Also, robes incur no penalty on your casting, so as a caster in a robe you will womp someone in full plate, as long as you can stay at range.  If you are going to be in a battle and you are primarily specced a mage, I think it would be smart to wear a robe and cast down on the battlefield from a concealed yet elevated position... offering support in the form of magic artillery.

Btw, robes can NOT conceal plate armor.  I've tested it.

Its not a make or break thing for me, just disappointing.  Maybe theres buff spells that can be used to offset this somehow, who knows.

Well, one of the disadvantages to wearing heavy armors is that they lower your effectiveness with magery to a noticeable extent.

For me, though, it's a big deal that this is the current situation with armors. I've usually been the leather armor type. :D

I'm going with whatever magic circle gives me lightning damage.  As you can tell from item links, all plate exceptionally vulerable to electric/lighning effects...  seems pretty logical.

Certain situations, leather still would outbenefit plate.  Metal in this game is VERY reflective.  You can see the glimmer from someone's armor well before you can actually make out a person's shape (like if someone's resting, you could see their armor glint from much further distance than if you were looking for someone who was wearing leather).

There are rarer items with magic bonuses, like faster cast speed or + stat, i assume that more of these with cast speed will be on more cloth armor, or there will be rare caster materials you need to loot off hard to kill mobs (i.e. the Evil Eyes i stumbed across... roaming giant eyeballs that nonstop shot FAST magic spells at me, including a stamina drain dot, ugg)

Im pretty sure it would be Air that grants lightning but i dont know shit about the spells yet, im only at 28 lesser magic.

But killing your foes with lightning brings an additional advantage.  U will be able to quote sidious and tell them how they will pay for their lack of vision.  Cant really do that shit if ur using ice now can u?

yeah.  in late stages of beta i looted a robe off a ghost thats on an island near the Gravelord island.

btw that ghost got all my party of 3 near death.  granted, my partymates were fighting kinda noobish, but that ghost was TOUGH.  and had nice sound effects and battle animations.

when i put it on the robe, it automatically took off all the bone armour i had been farming from the Gravelord (giant skeleton).

so that robe over armour thing was just one of the many things they talked about that didn't end up in the game.  dunno how they thought it was a good idea in the first place tho, so personally i'm glad.
