To those of you defending the guard towers. Why should they be kept in game?
To give meaning to the faction based system present in DF. Without guard towers and NPC interactions, the faction system would be pointless. Also, the guard towers are really weak from what I understand and they only really help when its 1 skill player vs 2-3 unskilled players.
Just take out alignment altogether.
The whole faction system is silly, pointless, and just a mechanism for abuse.
If somebody ninja-loots a mob I killed, I have a legitimate reason to kill them and take it. There is no reason I should suffer the alignment hit. Plus it would solve the people abusing the system by running in between you and your mob. With no alignment, this BS antics disappear and you are back to a true FFA PvP game.
People are too concerned with enforcing "consequences" for PvP. You lose a fight, you lose. Period. Don't lose fights, you won't need programmer-enforced "consequences".

towers are needed or there would be no difference between beeing blue or red. And also killing your own clan would just allways happen and others would have no place to run for relative saftey. Even when in town you are not completly safe with the towers. I mean it is possible to kill arround a tower. Next time think before you post maybe.
You answered my question before I asked it I disagree with your entire post. The difference between being blue and red is that when you're red, all of the blues gank you. None of this has anything whatsoever to do with killing ones own clan. The fact that you talk about people having a "place to run for relative safety" confirms my suspicion that it is in fact a safe zone. Just becuase you arent 100% invincible doesn't make it not a safe zone.

If there was no towers at all all the starting towns would become just a non stop kill zone and almost everyone would be red. Why would anyone stay blue if they could kill people without having some penalty. And yea If you attacked someone without in the game all the blues would kill you but there would be no blues left, so you would be killed by a red instead. Yes beeing a round a guard tower is somewhat safe but for the guard tower to kill a player it takes about 10 shots or more from what i've seen.

Towers cover not even 2% of the land mass. Sorry you cant gank newbie characters all day..........er wait you still can, this just gives them a measure of safety.
And no they are not safe zones. If you wear armor inside a town and go afk when you return you will be sitting at a bindstone naked.

Yes we do need newb ganking, because it WOULD lower server population, which is exactly what we need to do. Weed out the f*ing carebears so I can actually hit a mob/person with out it warping around because there is to many people online!

those who think guard towers equal a safe zone are idiots... Just like in real life there are consequences for your actions. Being attacked by guard towers can be one of them. You can still do your business... you simply need to compensate for the consequences.
for those unable to grasp the concept let me give you a scenario: You are not prevented from cheating on your wife/girlfriend. She is not safe from your adultery. However, if you commit adultery you may have to pay the concequences. If you do it while someone who looks out for her is watching, then you either a moron or you are willing to endure the consequences.

The alignment system is great for encouraging the lore-based factions. You may argue about this as a matter of taste, but they're an intended part of the game design from day 1, and with gods in the picture the idea of "I should be able to ally with whoever I want" is a little less cut-and-dry.
The problem is the rogue system. With it, alignment is turned to a different purpose (protect the innocent), and the scenario you mention, punishing a ninja looter, is punished before it even begins... and more to the point, it's punished. With the view of alignment as faction standing, going blue doesn't mean you're a good guy, it just means you've got brownie points with the guards. You lose some for murder, no matter why you did it... whatever, get some more. Going rogue, though, turns that all around: you're no longer free to make the decision of whether a kill is worth it.
Axe rogue status and close up some of the pathetically easy alignment-farming techniques (meet your alfar friend at a chaos stone, kill each other for half an hour, +100!), and we'll have a game where the NPCs want you to do RvR but you're still free to punish morons (or gank newbies if that floats your boat).
