I never p2p'ed an mmo before. NEVER. I'm planning to buy DF in either 2-4 months or on the NA launch (lol I'm not going to buy it right now, I was in beta I know better, you guys can pay to beta test for me). I was once thinking of buying WoW and I thought after the trial was over, all you did was start paying the 15$ a month (i've heard different though, i don't know)
Do all mmo's have an account creation price? I know the 50$ tag will go down eventually, but is one always there? (like, if WoW has one, how much is it?)

$14.99/ month is pretty much industry standard for any MMO that is relevant.
Most P2P MMOs have the purchase fee (what ever the box rate is at that point, sometimes $50, sometimes less) and then the monthly fee.
Even after doing a game trial and purchasing the retail copy (or digital download) you will still get the free 30day free playtime that is included in the price.

That is the monthly subscription rate. I think he was asking about the initial client or "box" price.
Most MMOs are very similar to their single-player counter-parts when it comes to release pricing. They start out in the 40-60 dollar range and then 3-6 months later they start dropping in price. Usually by the 6-9 month mark they are about half what they were at Release.
Traditionally download is cheaper than retail box price, but that is not always true.
I dont think a boxed version will come soon maybe even not for a year or never.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I was talking about account creation price, which right now for DF is 50$
And I would expect the price to be 10$ once it comes to NA, since its cheaper than WoW in Euros right now and Euros usually directly translates into $ even though Euros are worth more (if AoC was making you buy the game for 15$ a month in the NA version, in the Eu version they'll make you pay 15 Euros a month.)

Yes, most MMOs do have an initial price. If you meant account creation price in a literal sense... You're paying them for the years of development and paybacks to investors who are stepping on their throat. The monthly fee is for ongoing development and other expenses.... And... Probably another cut to investors.

He has since changed his stance a little bit on F2Ps, but not much.
I've been playing a few F2Ps (Perfect World and Runes of Magic) and they are surprisingly decent. I'd never pay a monthy fee for them, though. I much rather find a good P2P to play.
hence when I said "box price" it was in quotations, I'm well aware there will be no box, so its confirmed all mmo's always have prices for ACCOUNT CREATION, that's gay, you're already paying 15-10$ a month...

Aye, the only problem with F2P games is you get one gem now and then buried in a mountain of shovelware clones.
But you are right. The initial fee (retail price) is the price you pay for the license for the game. The monthly fee is basically meant for server upkeep fees, etc.

I played WoW and WAR at their release times, and the box price was actually $60 I think. I played DAOC and EQ WAY after they were released and they were free because of it, but they had numerous expansions (at least EQ did) that brought the price up. The $15 for each one. I'd say the prices they've set are pretty standard, and I imagine if the games does well and continues on, the price will eventually go down (not for monthly though).
Well no not all mmo's have a retail price, there are some that's 100% free. There's some free to download but have a monthly fee ($10-$15). The mmo's that do have boxes are the ones that cost $30-$50 to buy then the monthly fee, then there's a few that's download only (like Darkfall) that have the retail price.
Depending on how well Darkfall does the game could drop in price fairly fast, or could become a 100% free download with the monthly fee or could stay $50 for a long time. Just have to wait and see.
You're paying for the right to use the software, like with EVERY SINGLE GAME, not just MMO's. What, do you think that new Xbox 360 game cost $60 in physical materials? LOL. You're paying 50 cents for the packaging and $59.49 for the development time, for the coding, and most importantly, for the ability to play it. That's what you're paying for here, just like every other game you ever have or ever will pay for.

I dont understand your logic. The game should be 50 US when it comes out. Its not going to be 10 dollars.
