Darkfall review thus far

DramafexDramafex Member Posts: 37

Now that all the glitches are sorted I must say Darkfall has a lot of great attributes with some big pit falls.

The graphics are quite good for an MMO. Nothing amazing but at full graphical settings it is refreshing to see in an MMO.

The questing is good (except if you are banned from your city for ganking, then you can't go back until you get some racial points back).

The combat is pretty fun. I just dont like having to go back to the bank every 20 minutes out of fear for your loot.

Everyone is killing every grey person they see, which is part of the game but half the time they are grey on accident. So the honor system is crap.

The UI is complete crap. You have to make so many clicks and button presses to do anything. Not to mention the tons of command line bullshit you will find yourself entering.

Starting off, I must say this game is actually quite bothersome once you get past the hype of it all.

I don't think Darkfall will last long as much as I want it to. It is far too PvP based and lacks the simplicity of control to allow your imagination to get you into it.

I can see hardcore players being done with it in a month when all the exploits make it pointless to play.

This game within six months will fall flat on its face when pvp takes over and AV realizes that PvP is such a small part of MMO sales and no one who doesn't PvP wont touch the game.

I will continue to play knowing this is build 1, but if this game wants sales beyond its fan base it has tons and tons of catching up to do.

I would say adding more liency to new players and start zones along with more quests and options.

More punishment for those who are just killing for fun.

More Mobs in start areas with faster respawns.

More detail in combat systtem.

Better UI and looting system/skill usage.

Better server reliability and more servers of different types (i.e. PvP, RP, so forth)

Other than that I wiould give Darkfall an HONEST 7 out of 10

Going Grey is actually pretty forgiving. If you hit someone once your grey for 10 seconds, if you hit them again it's extended to 2 minutes and goes from there. This way if it was an  accident you only have 10 seconds to worry which isn't long at all. If it was with intent or due to extreme carelessness then you pay the price.

The UI is the way many wanted it to be, it's simplistic and minimalistic. Looting, don't count on that changing either. It's made that way for a reason. You have to click and drag piece by piece, if this changed they would lose for more than they would make happy.

The commands etc are changing, be glad it isn't as bad as it was in beta lol. /party_create, /party_invite Blah Blah lol. Many of the commands have been shortend already, and it's ok to assume the rest will as well. Man I remember when sending a tell was a huge pain lol.

As far as PvP goes, expect that to be a constant for the first week or so. It will die down, but for now everyone logging in for the most part is going "PVP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" lol. Once that phase passes it will tone down. Having only 1 char per server per account will help a bit later on when people realise how accountable they are if they wish to keep the char they have been working on.

They have also stated there will be no different server types. Server rules on every server will be the same. No special rule sets.

Having said all that I will agree with the 7/10 rating. While the game has some bugs and other issues, it is still a great game. A lot was actually fixed already. The problems I have are communication (They have gotten much better, but still need some work) , Updating there Main page, The billing system and the Shop, things of this nature. They seem to be pretty good with the designing and development and fixing the game, but not the rest lol. There getting better, would be nice if they had someone else worrying about the other stuff though.

So 7/10 for me as well.

Are you more rating the company with that 7/10?   or is it an average... company 5/10 actualy game 9/10

on the broken alignment system... its not nearly as broken as it was before, i THINK after patch 125 you turn grey for 10 secs for the first hit, and more if you continue to hit the other person. If this is true (confirm plz, i didn't buy, i was just in beta), you just have to run away for 10 secs and you are safe.

You should have seen the system that was in place in beta... you turned grey for 2 minutes regardless, and if you were in the alfar or human areas, EVERYONE tries to flag you grey, and basically, unless you have a full bar of stamina, you were dead once you turned grey, no questions about it.

    So be grateful

This is a PvP niche game. It was constructed to be as such. If it's impossible for AV to survive on said niche, than a good MMORPG shall never exist.

Outside the huge hardcore fans this game will get boring fast. Don t beleive me check again in 3 months.

Yeah, game is about a 9/10 for me, but the company in other area's 5/10. There great Developers, but horrid, horrid businessmen. They really should have had a publisher handle most of this, but I can understand why they didn't. A publisher would want full control and we would lose the development side of it.

So trading off fun for headaches in other area's lol.

    Game: 9/10

    Business sense: 5/10

you forgot to mention that atm the crafting system is grind tastic and not worth the investmet. And that sprinting is still broken (it is broken officially, stated by the devs, they wanted to fix it but ran out of money (and thus they launched this piece of sh!t), they said they would fix it after launch), and that melee is less complex than Guild Wars melee. Its just circle strafing like in CS except now you move like in Goldeneye.

    Lol

    I LOL'd when i read ur post.

The game is MEANT to be hard. I cant be bothered writing the counter arguement for the things i disagree with, but just keep in mind that the things that are hard and annoying are probably intended that way and is why they have officially stated before that 'Darkfall is not for everyone'.

I havent played it yet tho so perhaps i have no credability in saying what i said, tho i have researched it a great deal and kept up with both forums. Also keep in mind they are not seeking a HUGE player base, this game wont die down any time soon you can count on it.. only way to know for sure is to wait and see..

i really hope i find a nub like you that uses only melee skills and runs in circles.

crafters are going to be incredibly valuable to guilds

i'm trying to see how sprint's broken.

Just to correct the player that said ' looting is slow and is intended to be that way'.

There is already a very available hack that allows you to 'loot all'  almost instantly.   Someone else almost has another hack working that will close down the gui if another player gets within X yards of you.  This helps a lot now because most players are melee.  The hack will probably be less useful when more players develop their magic skills.

I think the whole 'there is risk in looting' will be complete hacked around very shortly.

lol tard did you play beta? The devs officially stated that sprinting is not working how they intended it to be since everyone sprints ALL THE TIME and that they are looking into completely revamping the system (eventually they wanted like 2 different stamina bars or something, one reserved for sprinting). There's really no reason not to sprint its so cheap in stamina, and thus it makes ping more important and it makes everyone move like in goldeneye.

Its good now that you can't get good weapons from vendors and only from crafters... AND MOBS. Right now its probably much easier to farm a mob for most items than to ask a crafter for an item, just like WoW (where vendors had sh!t and everyone just got their gear from mobs, not crafters)

And you really think the melee system has depth... REALLY, please tell me what mechanics that are in the melee system, that gives it depth. (also, the weapon choices in melee are really lame, no reason to use a 1h unless you plan to use a mount (if you want to use a shield, just switch to it, and switch back to a 2h when you want to attack))

Yeah, it's similar to the one made for UO. The plus side is the Devs already know what to look for and the TOS gives them permission to scan your comp for progs like that. This may be an issue early on, but don't expect it to be a long term thing considering.
