hi, i want to create my own mmo....i know that seems foolish, but anyway i would like to know what people want to ,i hear that linear is too crowned and i dont like game that are too linear,(and it become boring after time) i might try sandboxes medieval or sci-fi.:P anyone have a good engine that i can take it for starting my own? something that i can start from scrap.
Just curious how much experiance do you or your team have with making games, do you have some simple games made already, or will this be the first project?
If you never made a game before what ever genre, I doubt you can work on a MMORPG, but like I said what is your experiance lvl in programming or making a game?
to qoute myself...meh...
Anyway what I needed to ask is apart from the programming skills, have you made mods for games, it would be a nice place to start of you might lack the education in programming, like I said in my previous post I am unsure what your lvl of expertize you have which would be nice to know.
I also found this topic rather intrested for those wanting to get into the game My MMO and what happened. (WARNING: WALL OF TEXT) it's not MY MMO but fro the person who made the topic to be clear about the link, his name is DEMC
Some are talking me back into finishing this so maybe Whren will happen yet. Lets look at maybe 3 years from now and see if it is going to happen.
I've been working on an MMO myself (not done, but close). Its based on the Prairie Games, Inc Torque MMO Kit on top of the Torque Game Engine 1.52, and made almost exclusively with licensed art assets. Budget was sub-$100,000 including hardware and self-hosting for a year. I have some videos up on how it was done. www.RealmLords.com and hit the button for "Making of". The games in open beta ATM. A client is up for DL if you want to poke around with it. Ken

I just checked out that link and RealmLords actually looks superior to Darkfall which is amazing in that it only took about 6 months to make when Darkfall took 8 years to make.

Looks good, I'm going to check it out.
I checked it out, dude this is great for one person - I'm still learning how to play - but really good so far. Well done. Why is beta ending? Why didn't you tell us about this before?
This isn't meant to offend so dont take it personally. However, coming on here to ask how to make an MMO in the first place just shows you are worlds away from even starting the basic development of an MMO.
You are better off asking for good advice on where to get started for practicing. Keep one thing in mind. You will not make any reasonable MMO for quite a long time. Even spending 4-5 hours a day in your off time pursuing this project, i'd say you are probably looking at nearly a year of experience with 3d software programs, coding, networking etc.. before you are mediocrally viable to start any MMO that is poised to even work properly and be semi stable.
I spent 6 months, about 2-3 hours a day 5-7 days a week in my off time playing around with modeling programs, reading up on programming languages such as C#/C++/Java etc..and i barely even scratched the surface. As you can imagine, I put that stuff on hold for the time being as I had life issues to deal with.
I say, find an area to start in (modeling, programming, networking etc..) and practice there. Go to forums (not here) specifically designed to help people in those areas. Read tutorials and learn how to do things yourself, or go to school for it. The amount of information and hands on experience required to pursue creating an MMO is damn near infinite.
(This is all considering making a viable competing MMO in the current market. There are, as you have seen, amateur MMO creation tools available.)
