Ya, your best bet is to just get a "real" hd.
You can get like a 500gb from Newegg for the price of that 360hd, lol. They will be faster then the one that comes with the PS3 as well, I believe the PS3 default is only 5400 RPM.
The PS3 just like the other consoles at its core is a computer that has the same standards as most computers. Just because a 3.5" drive won't fit in that bay doesn't mean you can't use one outside the PS3 using sata II extension cables or in its own case mod. You can take a PS3 apart and put it into a computer case if you wanted to.

I dont think external HD's work....
But PS3's use normal PC hard drives, so you can get big ones really cheap. Unlike 360's which are like 80 bucks for 40GB which is a huge rip off.

Just remember that it's a "laptop-hdd" that's used in the PS3, and not a regular sized hdd, as you would use in a normal workstation.
