I just activated my AoC account. I played for 6 weeks during release and quit because of state of the game.
Im so glad i gave it another try!
+Good client/game performance now
+ More content (zones/dungeons/quests etc.)
+ More overall polish
I still dont like the failcom lies but i dont give a sh*t even if it´s a crap company as long as i´m having fun playing.
You too should give it a try if you´re looking for an MMO to play!

I understand how you must be experiencing a much better game than the one you left. Craig has been really busy cleaning up after Gaute, and a lot of improvements have been made during Craigs reign.
Theninjaboy posted a very well written summary that you might find interesting:

It is preferable not to travel with a dead man.
I agree. I still have issues with how Funcom is doing stuff, but it has gotten better. Today for example, all the little niggles with the last patch are being fixed, so they are trying to stay on top of this stuff.
This type of commitment will definitely pay off in the long run.

Totally agree, statements like these are more common on the boards now. So long as FC keep working at it and I can see and experience the change then they have my money still.

I'm glad people are giving the gamea second chance.
I started playing about 2 months ago, and as a completly new player (and someone that doesn't listen to a single poster on these forums about what is "good" or "bad") I came in w/ a completely clean opinion.
My biggest question was "What are people talking about?"
This is a clean, polished, immersive, fun and engaging game. It's gorgeious (I play at max) and I've found no negatives with the game.
I can understand people's mistrust w/ FC b/c of the launch problems and features not in, but people that post rediculous comments like the game is "broke" or "unfinished" are just down right stupid or ignorant. The game may not be what they're looking for specifically, but it's far from broken or imcomplete.
I'm totally loving it now, and think people that aren't easily jaded or dismissive will love the way the game is now. Those who have never tried it, will have an even greater experience, b/c the poor launch isn't soemthing they'll have to compare too.
The answer is simple: people like different things.
85-90% of players didn't like AoC and they quit duting the first couple of months.
9-14% like AoC and still play it.
1% absolutely love AoC and come here on these forums daily to defend it.
I guess you are in that 1%?
If Funcom want's to prove their MMO is good, they need to offer a free 14 day trial or something.
I would be open to try it out if there was a free trial.
I agree the game is getting better, but for what I ve seen in game, most of the community will move to Darkfall, so it might be a tiny bit too late for Funcom.
AoC has to make bold decisions in order to cut it.
At the moment is a little bit carebearish for a PvP game, but not enough depth for a PvE game.
I believe the times of "let's make everyone happy" are gone.
I think we are approaching the diversification era, and AoC needs to decide which side it wants to be.
It's very doubtful that most of the current AoC population would move to Darfall, not for any other reason than full loot not being popular for real among the AoC community, and people there having a mixed appeal for pvP and PvE.
Lot of people are also spoiled by the graphics and find hard to move back form the -more dynamic- melee combat system.
DF has it's ouwn particular player base appeal, and it don't greatly overlap those of most other games.
Just subbed last week..got a great deal on box..and said "what the hell". I love this game. I like it more once I got off of Tortage. The graphics are smooth and beautiful. Most of the quests are structured well and interesting. I experience few bugs and glitches. The fighting animations are well done..i wasn't impressed at first..but when my ignorance subsided, and i learned how the combos work vs. shields ...i grew to really enjoy combat .When i ask questions I receive kind and patient advice. Sure...there can sometimes be a few immature tools chatting away like 12 year old newly hormonal jackasses...or they may actually be 12yr old newly hormonal jackasses..idk...but for the most part everyone is cool. I was very surprised...given the lashing this game receives on a daily basis. I highly recommend this game. Yeah...I guess I could have waited for a trial..I received a buddy key but it was for EU servers...too much of a PITA. Just look at amazon.com tho...you can buy the boxed game for 7 bucks plus shipping...around $10. For this small fee you can try it for 30 days(free 1st month) then cancel before re-sub. While the various amazon store's supplies last...you really don't need a trial..unless you're an absolute cheap-ass.
Actually once DF sort out shit together and allow people to buy and play the game we will see the raise of population in AoC.
There is quite a lot of people that left AoC in early days and said fuck it Iam waiting for DF now and the main reason was players want different combat system.
As everyone saw DF have some huge issues were do you think all those "diff combat" fans go.

Well I for once just canceled AoC subscription to play DF, so I contraddict your theory.
As I said, at the moment AoC is ok and I might come back, but for me is a bit too carebear, and by playing 3 months after release and 2 months recently I had the impression a big chunk of the community, particularly big guilds, were looking for something a bit more extreme.
Time will tell though.

Hey Ste,
From my perception in Sept, we went through this already with WAR, aparently all the AoC guilds went there and left. But the game was still around. WAR had a load more hype in the PVP area. To be honest the catchment area for DF is small. A lot of guys I play AoC with were in DF beta with me, although not the worst game ever I think it's pull will be just as short lived as WAR's. Yet during all this time AoC was busy beavering away correcting things and is on the cusp of implementing some significant changes. It has the benefit of time on its side where as DF is just starting off with many issues, missing content and so on (to be expected, not in a bad way). If there will be any pull it will be summer time ish.
I think that hardcore extreme element is small in the guilds that play AoC. Nothing wrong with trying DF out, but they will be back, just like after WAR.

Like I said see you back in AoC after the DF free month
p.s. Hopefully AoC will go in more extreme direction. They said pvp resources drops/loot are just the begining to test the system and more items will be marked as lootable in PvP.
Futilez[Do You Have What It Takes ?]
I think they are making a mistake if they wait for DX-10 to be ready. Itemization I could see waiting on but not DX10. They need to get the free offers out there asap once they patch itemization and its functioning as intended.
I would start a win-back campaign with the itemization patch (after any issues with it get ironed out), followed by a new buddy keys offer (maybe among those that have had an account open from start, to give them some thank you for your support) to try and capitalize on the massive database of gameplayers the game has, and then trials.
I think AoC will lose a lot of players to DF. They both attract hardcore pvp gamers but DF is much more hardcore.
One third of my AoC guild went to DF.
A small company like Aventurine can get away with making a niche PvP game. I'm not knocking it when I call it niche. I believe even the devs have acknowledged they are appealing to a niche.
DF would be a huge success with a sustained sub base of 50k based on development cost, but a big company that is going to spend 50 mil+ cannot afford to only appeal to a niche. Would AoC survive if they eliminated PvE servers and made it purely PvP? I doubt it.
Besides they never advertised it as a PvP only game, they placed it as PvP inclined, but never as mainly or solely intended for PvP.
They shouldn't eliminate or reduce the Pve elements in it, simply cause that was never the plan in the design, so basically you would be cutting an integral part of the whole.

Heh keeping them there will be the tricky part for DF.
The thing is its not real release atm its payed beta and they dont dare to make it open for everyone thats the reason why there is only 6K-8k sold accounts.
Its funny for the released game to have options in menu DO NOT TOUCH THIS AGAIN
Personally Iam quite sad of such bad DF release.
As gamer I like to have my options open and would prefer all games to have decent release not saying uber polished but decent.
Hopefully DF will survive ( on more then some skeleton crew ) and with time they will finish the features and polish the game.
I was playing DF beta and the main problem I see in DF is that game is "jack of all trade and master of none".
Its hard for any game to pick up after bad release however with enough time invested its douable.
AoC have quite few things going as graphics/combat/animation/sound/lore.
Its funny how people say fck that gameplay is most important well I agree to certain point however with all those people praising how DAOC was an ultimate RvR game -> well why does not have that many players now ..maybe cause graphics is outdated .. gameplay is stil there.
DF started with the list of shitload of features ( most not tested in beta as it was said it locked ) but graphics is barely acceptable ( the terain nice, the items characters, buildings feels very outdated ).
If AoC would be released now it would have more then 500K subs and yes players would leave despite in what state is game.
Personally in the long run I see great future for AoC ( feature, gameplay, fun wise ) especially after expension release ( maybe early 2010 or end of 2010 who knows ) to bad for me as I dont think I will stay that long with it.
( playing AoC very activily since Oct 07 Beta and usually I quit all MMO''s before 2 years mark )
Futilez[Do You Have What It Takes ?]
Whether you return to AoC or not, depends on how you experienced the game and which standards you think an MMO requires for you to have fun. My own experienced was really bad from the very beginning of playing AoC. One thing after the other popped up, until 1 month later I just could not handle it anymore. I have been in many other MMO betas, and nothing beats the bad customer service FC provided to me, my guild, online friends and IRL friends. All left 1-2 months into release.
I will never use more energy on FC, when they threatened everyone I knew including me in such a way. Who want to spend any money on air?
I'm playing AoC and loving it very much. My first customer service experience...well...I received a buddy key offer..downloaded client and found out the trial was for EU servers...I'm sure it stated so at the beginning but I missed the message. So several hours download for nothing. I sent email to support...7pm or so. Received response within 10 minutes...telling me that everything was switched to US Servers and to enjoy. I read the letter 10 minutes after I received It..because I foresaw a pain in the ass that was non-existent...and ordered a copy of AOC off Amazon for $6.00. I replied to supports email...saying thanks but I went and bought a copy. I received another response within 5-10 minutes telling me to contact them if I have conflicts with trial key and product key. I didn't have any issues. It was the most prompt and courteous support I've received to date concerning any MMO..and possibly any product or service I've ever required.
(OP Update)
Just hit level 40 yesterday on my new main character. Still loving the game=)
