if SWG:JTL (Starwars Galaxies: Jump To Lightspeed) could do it, why cant STO?

sabutai44sabutai44 Member Posts: 20

For anyone who has played SWG:JTL (jump to lightspeed) knows ships have interiors, and not only that but players can even man turrets and fire at enemy ships!

My point is, JTL was done years ago proving the technology is there and the capability is there! So why cant STO make ship interiors?

Personally, i think its due to RAD (Rapid Development) a company trying to get a product out the door as quickly as possible

Because the game is being marketted towards the ultra casual crowd, and you can't allow casuals to interact with other people online, they just won't have it. They demand 100% solo gameplay 100% of the time!

I blame the fact that they are making STO for consoles, in addition to PC's.

They serve no purpose whatsoever except as fluff . Totally inconsequential to one's enjotment of the game play. Most fluff is always best left for content patches and expansions. I'm glad they made the decision.

Not only does it show that they want to get the core game play fully flushed out and working properly, but more and more it appears that making this decision is yet another one that seems to be weeding out the whiney and caustic payers the game won't need.

There's something SWG should have done

    Great decision making Cryptic!

Or may because its fluff and like Hagon pointed out fluff is pointless and serves no need. People can interact before they enter space then talk through chat and stuff. What was the point of walking around on a ship? O look how I decorated my ship......

Why are you guys consistently trying to push features from the biggest failure in the history of all MMOs on every game?  You guys seem to make a habit of trolling the forums of every new game with a popular IP and demanding that they be turned into a virtual world where there is nothing to do but grind bols and admire the scenery. Face it, your precious game is dead. Even the makers of the next Star Wars game realize this and are going the complete opposite route that SWG took. Ask yourselves why no MMO maker wants to touch what you want with a ten foot pole and then get back to us. And no, because they are assholes won't cut it, a REAL business reason based on logic not emotion. In the meantime, the SWG Veteran whinage forum is that way------------------->

your "fluff" made for some epic space battles in SWG with those multimanned ships.....so umm....nice try....

first i think there is quite a difference in size between a four crew ship(jtl) and a two thousand crew ship(sto) in making ship interiors

second star trek ships don't have turrets

third have played swg jtl and the pob ships where pretty useless (apart from a few hardcore rpers) as you couldn't replace players with npc's when there weren't enough to fill the crew, d'ced or just plain buggered off mid combat

interiors would have been a nice add but i'm guessing just not practicle in sto

Yes, and it's so popular that dead servers were recently consolidated, last count had the game barely hanging on with 10k subscribers and the game has never approached a million subscribers even during the so called "glory days."  Pretty sad for an IP as widely known as Star Wars.

oh i am sorry you are confusing the GROUND GAME REVAMP with space combat...sorry, but people left cause the ground game and professions were destroyed, not because of space and multimanned ships...in fact i could probably argue Jump to Lightspeed is the only reason that game isnt a ghost town more so than it is.

Sweet space battles between the single player ships sometimes. Multicrewed ships were totally useless.

Aside from Hagon being correct about it being fluff, someone please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't "Jump to Lightspeed" an EXPANSION? As in, not in the game at Launch?

Personally I'm glad Cryptic is spending more time on the important parts of the game, and bringing ship interiors later.

  • CladhopperCladhopper Member UncommonPosts: 30

People just dont read now a days do they... Or is it they can't... Or is it that they only read what they want..

STO will have interiors... Just not at launch.. Go read their website and what the devs said on why they aren't having it in launch. The develop time would have added a lot more time to the game and because the game has been in lingo for soooo long they want to get it out to the people. They will add it in a patch.

There are also 3 or 4 interviews.. One being on this site that talks about this.

Yep Jump To Light was an Expansion

I disagree. If they want to make a Star Trek MMO they should do it right the first time. don't you ever get tired of that brown ring  Hagon?

FLUFF? Are you kidding me? Multi-manned ships are now fluff? Sorry, it's supposed to be an MMORPG not a single player game. The MMO audience is swirling faster and faster down the toilet.

These people aren't worth arguing with Miagisan as they obviously have no clue.

I still remember some good times flying my Y-Wing with my cousin manning the turret for me, guarding me while I mined or wreaking havoc in a dogfight. Good times these lubbers don't even realize are possible.

This is supposed to be a MMORPG ( Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) Not a massively single player game. If casual players are that ghey then MMORPG's are not for them and they should buy a Star Trek Game that is single player like star trek Legacy and leave the MMO's alone. As for why no interiors and player crews it's because the devs at cryptic do not have an ounce of imagination or talent. For proof look at CoH/CoV which was garbage IMO , and then Champions  another IP owned by someone other then cryptic couple that with STO it shows lack of imagination because cryptic has very little to do with the creation process.

I played that game for two and a half years. Don't try and tell me the game wasn't dying before the revamps because I know better. People were leaving the game because it was tedious and boring. The only reason I stuck around was because of the guild I was in and we found a way to have fun. But the game had numerous issues that were never addressed, hence why the bleeding subs and the subsequent revamps. If the space part was SOOOOOO fun as you suggest then why aren't mjore people playing it? And what does the biggest flop in the history of all MMOs have to do with STO and every other game's forums that you people troll in?  You think fans of those games who actually experienced that joke of a game want to relive it? Please...

By the way, you're pissy about interiors not being in the game at launch when the VERY FRIGGIN GAME you are using as an example took over TWO YEARS to have what you are now bitching about. If it took two years for us to have interiors then maybe you would have a beef.

Sorry, but if the millions of us left the genre it would cease to exist. Those of us who have a real life outside of the gaming world are here to stay. So either get used to it or you and your elitist, smug attitude can piss off.

Oh noes, now we got the 5 year olds posting!

Anyway, we all know what's really going on. It's people that could never get anyone to play with them if they were in control of a given situation. They had visions of finally getting a game developer to make a game where people would be forced into being under their thumb, and they could for once boss someone around without getting told where to go and how to get there.

It's never going to happen. Get over it or get out.

I think the real reason folks want player crewed ships isn't some power fantasy. Hell, anyone can form a guild and find newbies to bribe into joining in any game, anywhere.

The reason is, for most, that when we think of Star Trek we think of a ship, or a station, and her crew. It's the interaction of people on the ship, off the ship, together that makes the shows tick. Pretty fundamental stuff there and hard to get around.

SWG's multiplayer ships do work well even if the rest of JtL is kinda lame. But they're not the only example. There's multiplayer online ships in MUSHes that use HSPACE and folks don't seem to have any trouble getting crews together anymore than regular raiding groups in any MMO have trouble getting together. Hell, multiplayer ships are what you find in all iterations of tabletop Star Trek RPGs because it's just plain common sense. Old FASA even had mats you could set up to work like console displays for each player and keeping everyone working together, getting the most out of each system, and making the ship function like you wanted it to in a tactical situation was a wild set of minigames.

I've played all of these. I've been successful in all of these. And there's really no roleplaying experience out there that bonds people together like being a ship's crew. Nothin'. Everyone becomes family over time and the ship itself is like another personality that everyone's attached to as well.

    Always notice what you notice.

I agree. There are ways they can make this work in an MMORPG setting. I really get the feeling that Cryptic is taking the easy way out on this. Instead of trying to develope a new, amazing, unique game, they want to go the same way Perpetual did. No starship interiors, no player crews, just a space WoW clone with a Star Trek skin.

They don't even have to make people have PC crews, the NPC crew option should always be there. But they want to release the game this year and as dumbed down as possible.
