Also, if you just installed DirectX 8 and had DirectX 9 already installed then you didn't need to do that and any games that need DirectX 9 won't work.

Easiest way is probably go Start -> Run, then type in 'dxdiag' and hit ok, if dxdiag asks you about checking WHQL drivers just hit yes. Then click the Display tab and see what it says next to Device Name. It should say something like nVidia GeForce 7600 series or ATI Radeon 3800 series, whatever it is you got.
