The OBoards are in an uproar over the recently announced loot card additions to the card game, compounded by the revelation that the loot items are concieved, developed, and implemented by the SWG dev team at SOE Austin, which conflicts with the whole 'The SWG team has nothing to do with the card game so don't discuss it on the SWG forums!' meme. Adding to the fire was forum mod Elias calling a poster a liar, which seems to be a false charge, on top of being completely unprofessional. Said forum mod posted the follo0wing thread in the OBoard announcement forum: forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m The title of the thread is "GET SOME HOT LOOT IN THIS WEEKEND'S STAR WARS GALAXIES™ TRADING CARD GAME LOOT TOURNAMENT!". Not only is the word loot used twice in the thread title, but the thread title consists completely of capital letters, something no other thread title in the announcement forum does. The announcement post is an abvious display of the absolute contempt the folks at SOE have towards their customers. You would have to be quadruple jointed to attempt the contortions needed to justify the post as an innocent example of cluelessness on Elias' part. It is a shame that a company not only allows such contempt to be displayed by an employee, but SOE seems to also encourage it. People constantly come to SOE's defense by claiming they are a business whose goal is simply to make money. That defense rings quite hollow when the folks at SOE continue to go out of their way to piss off their customers, and thus lose money. If it wasn't for the fact that SOE's games themselves are enough to keep customers away, the open hostility towards their existing customers would be.
under what rock have you been living??
this is nothing new at all, its SOE as we have known them for years. im not gonna go into the whole "is the gambling or not" but why do ppl expect SOE to change suddenly? or do you just like to rehash the same old crap everytime for the next decennia till SOE ceases to exist?
Well, I can remember reading comments from SOE reps where they claim to have learned from their mistakes. When people hear one thing and then see what appears to be a contradiction, they're very likely to comment. I've noticed that people don't like hypocrisy, and that gamers tend to look out for each other, which I think is a good thing. If someone seems to have a habit of burning gamers, we're very likely to comment on it on forums like this. The best way to get these comments to stop is to stop burning gamers. Criticizing them (or trying to convince them that they are mentally ill--as someone else does above) apparently doesn't work.

There is no convincing about it Arc...several of ya got some issues. Serious like.
Like I have said...it wouldnt be "healthy" to be griefing/raging daily over a loved one passing away this long. We are talking about a video game.
Put that into perspective.
You tell the world, with your actions, that "nothing is wrong with what you are doing"...let alone if you come right out and say it like in this post by Arc I quoted. In the meantime others will just sit back and laugh. Quite frankly this world is an uncaring place, and if you have been around long enough you should already know this. When push comes to shove, do you really think someone cares that you lost a video game? Especially after you have already whined over 3 years about it? They dont...and they dont care to see the same thread repeated ad nauseam.
Sometimes it is just too easy with vets. Sort of like they are wearing the proverbial "kick me" sign. Like I said before, it reminds me of the stereo-typical "Trekkie" from years ago. Nerd's nerds so to speak.
I think everyone has a bit of a "nerd" side to them. It keeps us old farts young at heart which is a good thing. What you guys are pulling is social misfit material. Like I indicated...just asking to be made fun of.
Sometimes my conscience gets the best of me, like now, and I try to point out just how wacked the chit you guys pull is.
I have a chronic disease...almost 27 yrs now. Despite fighting my health I earned my college degree/ got a great future lining up/married/kids/house...the whole deal. Only to see my illness finally get the best of the battle, and take everything away from me, the wife, and kids. We cant afford a lot of the better things in life now and I get ill a lot...but we can still game together. Even though I cant hold a good paying job anymore, it still isnt something you cry about daily. A person goes about their business, instead of constantly dwelling on bad things.
But you guys dont. You live it all the time. Witness this forum with its "Misery luvs company" persona about it.
Like I have said a while back...you guys make me feel better about myself. I have plenty of reasons to be jaded, but I still try to see a cup half full in life. To know there are folks that can lose it over a video game...I would hate to see how you would deal with some real adversity.
You call yourselves vets? I see candy arses, and will continue to until the day folks pick up another game, and quit feeling sorry for themselves. Cause when push comes to shove, there is more to life than video games, and folks shouldnt sweat the small stuff.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

Best post I've read on this forum in quite a while. Ty Moak

And yet here you are posting in the SWG refugee forum for a game you never had any investment in and flaming people.

LOL! Still whining and obsessing about the vets and their views in the vet refuge. There is more to life than whining about what others think about a game you are presently playing - so what better advice to take than your own? Maybe the time you spend obsessing and trolling here would be better spent with your family.

Ok, I will bite on this one. You have a chronic illness? I am sorry to hear that. Lost everything along the way after earning it? I truly am sorry to hear that for you. But for you to come in here and assume that since you have had a horrible hand dealt to you and that you have the winning hand in the "I've had the roughest life deck so I am an authority on people and their issues" - Sorry fella - doesn't fly.
There are nearly 7 Billion people on planet earth. Each with their own set of issues. Many of which have a harder lot in life than anyone on this board. MMO? Internet? Forum? There are not even words in their languages for these things that even you in your state currently enjoy. I worked on the mission fields and seen quite a bit of bad things. Tribal wars, rape, murder and the lot. Back home, I helped run homeless shelters in innercity missions. Let me tell you, those people had it rough as well.
But let me tell you one thing, I spent some time with a man at the mission who was homeless. He too had everything once. Top architect , house, kids, boats - the whole thing. Earned by a degree he paid for by putting in his time after class at a loading dock - breaking his body to accomplish it. Lost it all. Every bit of it. Didn't even have an mmo or forum to post to. That being said, I came in one day with a long face and he asked me what was wrong. I looked over and I said to him, "Hey my problems are nothing compared to yours. No sense talking about them."
He replied, "And my problems are my own. Yours belong to you but that don't make them any less important in this messed up world." We talked. He didn't judge or pull out his trump card of dire. He let me vent. Never had the chance to thank him for that as less than a week later, he was found dead under overpass. Columbus had a terrible freeze one night and he was out in it. Apparently he didn't have internet to warn him of the weather.
Moral of this story - that man didn't judge me that day. He could have beaten anything I had but he didn't because he too knew he wasn't the center of the universe and that there is always someone out there with a worse life. Never seen him use his condition to call others candyasses either.
This is a forum. A place to vent. A place to raise issues. This is the VET forum with a description that says we can come in here and vent. You can come in here tell us your story and then use it to belittle us all you want to but don't expect us to take it as a trump card or that you are immune to criticism. Not here. Not now. Not ever. Everyone here lost something and if you are fine with loss - your deal. Not mine.
I can't wait to have this conversation with some buddies this weekend over a few beers...
"Guys, I regret to tell you that I've discovered I'm mentally ill. I guess you guys were right all this time when you said I was whacked after telling you so many bad jokes.
I never saw the signs myself as I didn't know that having a rational and logically discussion on a forum about the business practices of a gaming company and how their poor decision making was affecting thier game is classified as being in a poor mental state.
And how exactly did I discover my disorder? Because a forum poster told me."
Their forum admin did loose it that day, but you need to consider he is pretty new. I really dont think SOE is being contempt or clueless, they are behaving more like they are tied. Tied? SOE, you have to remember is the employee of LA, they work for LA. All the power with the game is in the hands of the producer, which happens to be a LA employee which answers to his bosses.
Looking at how SOE developes thier flagg ship game EQ2, they follow the model of expansions. And that is how SWG used to be developed. The live Dev team was responsible for streamlineing, bugg fixes and tweaking. Since the NGE their responsibility is now development of content, and it shows that they really cant handle this. It has slowed down updates by a factor of two or even 4. A publish would take at most 2 months in the past, now its more like 3-4 months.
And the quality of the publishes are getting really bad, we did see a good level of quality with some space work and addition of collections, but then they pushed all those Devs into the card game, and the level of good work turned into poor to mediocre. This is all the responsibilty of the producer. LA is pushing all the resources into the card game since it is making them additional money. The subs I bet only pay for the overhead these days.
Now about the tied part, we all know that SOE would love to put out a expansion, but LA since the NGE has decided to not develope SWG past its current form. Why? The game has not lived up to thier expectations, and have formed the opinion it never will, since they have spent good money on expansions to only see the population grow and then decrease. To them its like a money trap. So they decided to go with a new mmo and new company. I dont think SWTOR is that mmo, they might be working on a additional mmo behind the scenes.
It really comes down to what LA is going to allow SOE to do, and they really are not allowing them to do much. The game really is dead in that it is on what people call life support, with no real development planned. That is why they stated no expansions ever, and all it will see is what they call smaller faster and high quality publishes. I dont expect them to ever add another world or go beyond some new trinket, possibly a couple new instances a year, but nothing more than cosmetics for the fore-seeable future.

That was wonderful. It was meant as a joke, right?
EQ2 and EQ get development attention and resources because they have enough subscribers that there is a potential for a return on the investment. SWG hasn't had an expansion since just before the NGE, not because those big meannies at LEC won't let poor innocent SOE make one, but because there aren't enough subscribers to make it even a possibility that an expansion could make a profit. The SWG developers are not forced to make items for the card game because LEC wants them to, but because RMT is SOE's new desired revenue system. LEC is definitely part of what's wron with SWG, but they are nowhere near the problem the folks at SOE are.
Elias didn't insult a poster on the OBoard because LEC made him do it, he did it because he is an unprofessional ass. SOE has a long history of hiring unprofessional asses to be 'Community Relations' people.
The primary reason SWG isn't seeing the level of development resources that its playerbase feels it should is because it doesn't have a large enough playerbase for a larger resource investment (time, people, money, etc.) to be viable. It comes down to the fact that the game doesn't have the ability to attract a bigger customer base because it just isn't a very good game (it is a horrible game actually). It isn't a matter of LEC restraining SOE from making the game the shining beacon of the MMORPG universe. It is a matter of the game not having a large enough number of customers to make a larger investment in it worthwhile.

Don't forget that unlike SWG SOE does not have to share profits with a 3rd party with EQ and EQ2.
Lucas Arts has the power to approve projects, but they don't have the power to force whatever they want. Lucas Arts and SOE are PARTNERS. Lucas hired soe for their mmo experience and they relied on that to make them money. Invested if you will. They can't force soe to make an expansion which would cost millions when there is no way to recover those costs.
Lucas arts isn't calling the shots on the loot cards, because soe is doing that in several of their other games where Lucas has zero input.
If anything I am willing to bet lucas allowed soe to put the card game into swg just so they could get the metrics on how much and what people bought. The reputation of the game is already ruined, so no harm done there. Why not get some data out of it since it looks like the old republic game has a good chance it will be micro transaction based. All the damage is done over here and leaves old republic a fresh start so they don't make any mistakes that are done over here.
Unfortunately it happens to many on this board. If i listened to what my "diagnosis" was here my gosh its a wonder how I manage to put one foot in front of the other. Its kinda silly really but then this board is strange to start with. Last person to diagnose me here was archangel (err maybe a couple more afterwards) but the fact remains it looks funny from both sides. Oh yeah and I forgot every person who plays SWG has stockholm syndrome (classic case I am told). Again its a wonder how I manage to put one foot in front of the other or comb my hair with this load of crap to be honest.
(arthritic finger just one not wanting to type the right key again sounded like I had a cold..)

That's the truth right there. You remember when there were some people who were outspoken when the NGE came out, then you see those same people sometime down the line start defending everything the devs and reps do or say. Isn't that kind of what Stockholm Syndrome is?
I don't see anymore reason for me to pay to play SWG, to me it's just not the game I bought. That and I don't like being constantly lied to. According to what I've been seeing on the official boards, the people still playing are still getting hosed and those who rise up are soon shot down.
Just like when NGE first came out, I gave them some great suggestions, such as: at least bringing the combat system back and putting the movement and animations back to normal speeds. The people who were once against the NGE rose up and bashed me for my suggestions, so I gave up on them. If they want to play that, though I think they're crazy, they can play it. Me on the other hand will be siding with Bioware, who has yet to let me down in gaming.
Here's to the sinking ship, bless all those who drown in her.

Kudos to those who have actually tried to keep the thread on topic. It seems like some folks want to talk about the latest developments in SWG. Others (only 2 people really) seem to want to shut this down through bizarre criticisms, false accusations and side-trails. I think I'll just acknowledge all that for what it is, and ignore it.
As for the contempt or cluelessness. My theory is that they started with a measure of both. Contempt in the sense that they seemed to believe people would play any piece of crap with the StarWars label on it, even if it wasn't nearly ready for release. Then when it became clear that their unfinished, bug-ridden StarWars game wasn't able to retain StarWars fans, I think cluelessness took over. The smart thing to do, in my mind, would have been to finish what they started, fix what was broken, and add content.
Cluelessness, in my opinion, led to a series of poorly planned and poorly implemented game revamps that served to alienate the existing customers more than anything. I think that's when contempt took the reigns once again.
When players didn't warmly embrace the clueless revamps, some of the SOE reps seemed to get quite testy. At this point, it looks to me like they think they have very little to lose. As a result, it appears that they're using SWG to test controversial business models, and to see just how much cash they can milk out of the smaller population base that remains before the next StarWars MMO goes live. That definitely comes across to me as contempt.
As long as they keep reaching out to me and my gaming friends saying things like, "come on back, we've changed our ways," and as long as it seems they keep finding new ways to give gamers the crappy end of the stick, I'll probably be inclined to comment on it.
Chatting in here is really like hanging out with friends at a coffee shop talking about politics and the like. If some folks don't enjoy the conversation, I don't think they need to feel compelled to participate.
I have to agree with obee on what he said. Lucas Arts has the power to approve projects, but they don't have the power to force whatever they want. Lucas Arts and SOE are PARTNERS. lol no I dont think I could talk about that with a straight face. Its one of those comments I have seen that everytime I see someone telling me I have a classic case of stockholm syndrome I laugh out loud. lol

I agree.
It seems many simply dismiss the business ethical debate because SOE is in business to make money. A good business can make money while making their customers happy. Has SOE honestly done that? They have made many drastic changes to a game touted as a persistent world. They have outright lied. Through their own actions their name recognition is synonymous with fail. They cannot obtain new players so they only market to former players. The vast majority will never consider returning. They already charge a premium price for their MMO but now add items via the TCG lottery utilizing the same resources that they currently pay for. So yeah business ethics is very relevant when discussing SWG and SOE.

You know how closely that statement fits you?
Almost everyone else seems fine with the fact that soe has a long and ugly history of disrespect towards its customers. Fewer and fewer are the people who will publicaly come out and defend this company, because in reality people are just getting fed up and leaving them. Denial is trying to say that soe is a company that cares for its customers or any of the nonsense you seem to subscribe to.
Keep something in mind, you are paying money to a company that has more than once considered you, their customer, dispensable. On several occasions they have knowingly taken actions that would cause their subscribers to leave and they were fine with that. They have always valued the potential customer more than they value you, the person actually supporting them. Yet here you are trying to apologize for them. Much like someone who has a constantly cheating spouse does, because they just don't want everyone else to keep talking about it.
If you really want the vets to be quiet, please talk to soe and tell them to stop trying to get the people they thew under the bus to come back to their game. We all know it isn't going to happen and it just keeps the hostility alive. That and their continued disrespect that you come here to defend on a daily basis. Yet the problem is with other people... Keep telling yourself that.

under what rock have you been living??
this is nothing new at all, its SOE as we have known them for years. im not gonna go into the whole "is the gambling or not" but why do ppl expect SOE to change suddenly? or do you just like to rehash the same old crap everytime for the next decennia till SOE ceases to exist?
Well, I can remember reading comments from SOE reps where they claim to have learned from their mistakes. When people hear one thing and then see what appears to be a contradiction, they're very likely to comment. I've noticed that people don't like hypocrisy, and that gamers tend to look out for each other, which I think is a good thing. If someone seems to have a habit of burning gamers, we're very likely to comment on it on forums like this. The best way to get these comments to stop is to stop burning gamers. Criticizing them (or trying to convince them that they are mentally ill--as someone else does above) apparently doesn't work.
"Criticizing them (or trying to convince them that they are mentally ill--as someone else does above) apparently doesn't work."

Not mine.
Guess some people have to get over the fact that some will not.
BTW thats why this forums here...
that is all

It is a matter of the game not having a large enough number of customers to make a larger investment in it worthwhile.
Don't forget that unlike SWG SOE does not have to share profits with a 3rd party with EQ and EQ2.

I have to agree with obee on what he said.
Lucas Arts has the power to approve projects, but they don't have the power to force whatever they want. Lucas Arts and SOE are PARTNERS.

Except I said rational and logical discussions
This is how it looks to me as well. Nicely summarized.

lol no I dont think I could talk about that with a straight face. Its one of those comments I have seen that everytime I see someone telling me I have a classic case of stockholm syndrome I laugh out loud. lol

I'd bet they do make the same ones over there!
