Is Eve similar to the old Elite/Frontier game except a more advanced version and of course a MMORG?

    similar but only a little eve is an amazing game, if eve is boring to you your not playin it right, the learning cruve is a cliff tho..

    I think it is alot like Elite. Given regards to options that is made availble when you have alot of people to play with.

     Just get the trial,it's free and only takes like 1-5mins to register,no cc needed etc.You could wait till the 10-11th ,a new free expansion will be out with nicer weapon effects and such.

    The similarities start and end with trading in space. Ship control in Eve is achieved via a r3d person camera and requires little direct control, other than setting speed, direction, and clicking modules on and off, as needed. The game does offer a certain level of fun, however, imho as it develops, it is also loosing its initial focus. Player ability counts for nought in this game now as gear > all, and it is becoming more gear centric with each update. I recently cancelled an account I have had since the game launched due to the direction it is taking, however, dont let that put you off as it could well be what you are looking for. As others suggested, try out one for the free 14 or 21 day demos to see if it appeals to you and take it from there.

    If you would prefer a more hands on approach to space combat in an mmo environment, both Jumpgate evolution and dark prophecy are due out this year and both feature twitch based control from the cockpit, where player ability promises to be the overriding factor in combat (assuming they pull it off).

    I will have to disagree with the highlighted text. As a person who has fought some extremely skilled pilots I assure you, superior tactics that take into account each sides ship fittings is the far more important factor. Toss in things like spider tanking, logistics, and other factors and I feel EVE's combat is anything but gear centric.

    In fact, I can't see this being an issue at all, since everyone can pretty easily obtain most gear, except something like a Titan of course. (and even these ships are not invincible)

    Umm yeah sure thing buddy. Seems like you got a string of people disagreeing with you here. Care to rethink this statement ?

    While there are other space mmos coming out they will not have the same depth that Eve has. Jumpgate will offer the twictch combat but that is going to be it. Black Prophecy is a long ways away and being made by the guys that made Neocron. If thats an indicator of things to come then I predict a game that will have a great concept but will truly be broken by completely broken game mechanics and will hardly ever be updated. That's the way they treated Neocron anyways.

    The gear > skill part made me lol - EvE is the least gear dependent / gear centric MMO I have ever played.  Tactics and character skills (in that order) count for far more than gear, especially in pvp.  Can't say much about focus, I've been playing since mid-2007 (Rev. II) and thus far I've been very happy with the direction CCP has been taking the game - it's easily the best sandbox game on the market at the moment.

    Though, I never played Elite, so I can't say anything useful to the OP unfortunately.

    skill in eve is so far ahead of "gear" its hilarious. bet the guy who posted that has lost a few comedy officer fits.

    There is nothing to rethink, take a 20 mil sp pilot in any BS you please, equip it with an officer fit and put a 40 mil sp pilot in the same ship with T2 or best named gear, assuming two competent players are in control, who wins every time. There is a reason officer gear is banned from pvp tournaments, it gives a huge, unfair advantage to the larger alliances who farm it, day in, day out. I say this as someone who flew an officer fit BS and latterly a carrier, been there done that, can confirm its easy street, and quickly becomes boring.

    About the only real challenge left for established players is one of organisational skills for Corp and fleet commanders and I wouldn’t call that particularly difficult. When the game launched, while it was strewn with bugs and had far fewer ships and tech available, combat was a damn sight more fun than it is now; things like player reflexes and the ability to think on ones feet actually had a bearing on the outcome, especially with the crazy ship speeds possible back then, and fits were never an issue as everyone pretty much flew with the same.

    Now however, at the end of every combat it’s a case of “lol, look at his crap on this killmaill" or "I wonder what that guy that beat me had fit", if that’s not gear centric I don't know what is. If you find pressing f1 through f8 a test of player ability, you are easily challenged and I am happy for you. I on the other hand will return to combat flight sims, at least there, there is still a decent measure of player skill involved, and will sit back and see what Black prophecy and Jumpgate bring when they show up.

    OP, If you check a few Eve wiki's the CCP devs actually say they were inspired by UO and Elite and created Eve.

    for the rest of the nonsense in this thread pay no mind lol.

    I've never wondered what that guy had fit because I never worried about 1v1 fights. And the best fit officer BS still dies to a competent gang with ships that cost less then just a single officer module. Yes, Officer fits were not allowed for the PVP tournament because its the only place that you would see large quantities of Officers modules if they were allowed and that's because in such a highly restricted and Unrealistic setting of PVP that the tournament represents (As has been pointed out every single time its broadcast numerous times) they would be broken.

    As one of the older players in the game and as someone that has quite a few officer modules let me tell you I rarely use them out side of capital ships and if I do its solo for PVE not PVP.  Thats mostly so I don't have to worry about funding my opponents Capital ship program by droping one module.

    Why would both pilots have the exact same types of fittings?

    Maybe 1 fits all guns and 1600 plate the other fits half a rack of nos and dual rep.

    Better yet 1 guy has 3 friends on the other side of the gate and you're trying to be the super-special guy who flies around solo and pwns everyone, you engage the guy in what you think is 1 on 1, but he turns out to be a triple tanked bait ship, now he has you webbed and scrammed, and his 3 friends come in to take you apart.

    The skill in Eve is good tactics, killing the enemy's 1 with your 4, then disappearing before their blob arrives.

    Even that it would only qualify in regard to a player being able to properly fit out a ship for its role, the Quality of the modules can only help so much compared to the far more important thing of having a properly coordinated gang with complementing ships/setups.  So the statement that its gear-based is highly off.

    Now I do agree with you if he meant its not based on the players twitch skills, but then again most people won't claim that it is.
