yeah, i got jumped coming back from a little exploration. I had just picked up a nice shield, nice sword, nice helmet..little bastard! heh.

    easy come, easy go.

Hehhehe, reminds me of some guy yesterday who got killed by someone else right infront of me, looted the corpse and legged it. They both chased me down to get the stuff and fight over it again =/

lol this is exactly the type of stuff I am looking for!

I watched a lot of videos, for melee you click the LMB and attack, but the animation is the same every freakin' time! It's this vertical slash animation, and you have to do it for like 10 times. No other animation. That's it.

And the same thing for the magic. Little blue balls flying around the place. And I doubt those balls turn green when you get more skill.

Basically the animations suck in term making the combat more boring. There's the vertical slash, and the little 'cast the blue ball' animation.
Now if it had AoC combat/animations it would own.

Combat is actually very well made.

There are three animations for attacking, the sideswipe that will hit 2 or 3 ppl standing next to each other (but u can duck under it) the precise straight downswipe uve probably seen the most, since it will avoid hitting the ppl next to u.

And there is a direct forward thrust attack that u get once u train the other melee abilities.

And u can also block or parry which is pretty damn usefull.

As for magic, its HARD to level up, unless u are dedicated at the idea of playing a mage it will take a lot of time to get ur magic skills high enough to get into the higher schools.

This is good as those of us who are actually into magic will feel more unique as time passes by.

Once u get into the higher schools there are many many different damage spells, everythign u would expect from fireballs to bolts of lightning to Ice blasts, Acid arrows etc etc.

It is like M&B in the sense its uses a mouse, keyboard and a computer. Sorry it is nothing like MB's combat.  Its missing every single aspect of M&B.

    • Directonal attacking
    • Weapons speed all differ and are sensible
    • Hit model is fantastic so is object collision
    • Good sounds keyed directly into moves in combat.
    • Shield size and shape affect useage. e.g. some shields are better for mounted combat
    • Sensible weapons based on historical counterparts not e peen chainsaws
    • No need to magic as game is provides all the "magic" you need to kill an opponent via combat.
    • No sissy ressurect. You need to protect your troops and yourself. No screaming ress me here kids.
    • Specific strategy, equipment and troops for various scearions. Falling into foot-troops, archers and mounted and balance between the three
    • Specific times to plays troops. e.g. archering en masse whilst your troops are engaged is not a clever idea
    • Environment actually affects the play. Try night time archery ;)
    • Realistic movment through water.
    • Dieing if you turn your back to an a enemy on hard. This part has got me excited for Internet play
    • Mod for more formations ( Not tried this need to get round to it)
    • Mother fucking shield walls !
    • Mounted archery. AV too stupid to implement this?
    • A great skill based system which means smaller "bullet"  spread for thrown weapons as you skill gets higher
    • Impossible to swap fast between weapons in combat
    • Even the AI is better at formation fighting...
    • The graphics and animation are also much better than DF. Interesting from another much more "indie" developer.
    • Combat is core gameplay which everything else was defined around. Not so in DF combat is just another medicore aspect sold on its a PVP FFA game

MB is the best melee game on the market and Lord Tasos milked this. This is not ethical nor truthful. He simply looked for a successful long running  indie game and leeched on its niche popularity.

Also  may add MB is adding online features for 32 versus 32 with AI allies. Woot !... Not bad for  a much older game which already looks better and plays betetr than the POS that is DF. Oh dear poor old DF I wonder where it will be a in year or sos time ?

Anyways please dont even suggest DF combat is "like" MB because its massive fat lie and the main person to blame is Lord Tasos who quite frankly us happy to say is "like" any actual good game because  DF itself is in insipid, uninspired mediocre left click-a-thon. I wonder what else DF is "like".

    Peace out

    /agree

Too many people are believing what Tasos Flamsham is telling you, when the truth is right in front of your face. Guard tower and no housing...  awsome game,  Tasos the inept..!

why are you trying to compare a single-player game to a MMOG? do you even realise what site you're on? let us know when M&B can simultaneously handle 5K+ players in a seamless world, ok?

Darkfall is undisputably the best real-time melee *MMOG*.

Terrible argument here. Diablo was popular because it was a new idea, within a growing market of computer gaming.

It's actual gameplay depth was terrible, but it was a game for the PC (zomgosh).

Darkfall offers nothing new or innovative, just massive grinds with macros every way you look at it.

    Nothing new to the table, no innovation blah blah blah blah blah.......... You can not re-invent something. Darkfall is STILL a MMORPG, like every other game on this bloody website. What does that have to do with the price of eggs? Let us see, I think between the games listed here most things have been tried or implimented;

    Raiding

    Questing

    PvP

    Seiging

    Player owned content

    Player designed content

    Player run politics

    Destructable scenery

    Science Fiction

    Fantasy

    Historical

    Mythical

    Steam Punk

    Post Nuclear Holocaust

    NPC henchmen

    Mini Games

    Puzzles

    linear

    non linear

    slimline RPG - ala Fury

...............and the list goes on. Just what, exactly are you expecting to see from a game developed within the GENRE of mmoRPG? There are certain features that make an mmoRPG exactly that. As each subsequent release comes and goes you will become more and more familiar with the feature sets.

Maybe we will one day see some major new feature, perhaps we need to wait for technology. The more you listen to music the harder it becomes to find something new and fresh, you are listening to one genre of music - jazz - and then complaining that each new jazz tune sounds "jazzy".

Considering that 12 people can buy the game at 4h30 in the morning every day, I might be able to test this game by 2012 and post my thoughts on combat here.

I'm not a no life that sits in front of his computer all day long, I'm an intern that sits in front of his computer all day long.

I just don't get it.  I've seen videos, and I've watched live feeds.  I've had people describe the melee combat to me as counterstrike knife fighting.  At this point I don't know what to believe anymore.  I'll just pass til a free trial is available.

You're telling me in a month or two the combat is gonna be completely different and much more complex than someone spamming their mousebutton?

For a game that took how many years to make, Darkfall just looks old.

Well, thats what you get when a title has been in development for 8 years. :p

Yes... 8 years... I wish I could say I made that up, but I didn't. At least I give them props for not making another wow clone.

Whats going to hurt them more is when Mortal Online comes out, in my opinion of course.

    what a tard

I mean i really dislike darkfall and hope they fix the major fails of the game before the NA launch, but your reasons for disliking the game are just....

Long dev times don't usually mean a bad game, if ANYTHING they mean the opposite.

Mortal online will PROBABLY destroy Darkfall but you can't be sure of that because MO is a lot less "hardcore" than DF, for one, the devs are thinking of zones (for arena, cities, etc.), they only expect battles to be 12v12s or a little larger, there is no territory war in MO in launch, and they plan to impliment a stealth system that's partly character based (semi invisible) and partly player based. But other than that, MO will be better than DF in every respect, its just that the features I listed above are HUGE game breakers for a lot of ppl, and that will keep them away from MO. For me, DF's retarded melee is a gamebreaker, so you'll find me in MO :P .

    When I'm energetic I'm:

    When I'm at default I'm:

    WHITE/BLUE

Lol according to this I'm bipolar :O

Hey I didn't start the comparison your imperious grand lord Tasos did... or rather as I said above.. he LEECHED the MB gam niche popularity.

... and quite frankly a left a thon is still a left click a thon no matter how many people you happen to be having a big old left lick a thon with. Innovative combat my ass ! If the future of MMO is to have crappy ass combat which most non MMO FPS games had years and YEARS ago with large and few hit boxes.. count me out. I must have a brain cell or two.

Actually in the case of DF I seriously doubt most the time was spent being productive. Though 8 years is somewhat excessive to be in the development phase. Design maybe. They probably spent more time trying to catch up with a ever changing PC landscape. Especially since  there such a small company.

This game would have been great 4 or 5 years ago, its left click a thon combat would have had even me hooked but the world has moved on sadly.

Seems like you didn't understand the comparison. Just because games may be in different genres doesn't mean they have nothing in common.

omg M&B isn't an MMO- nothing in any way can be similar to a game that is online!!!

Load up any MMO, even the hall of fame PvP games like Ultima Online, and PvP with a character out of the box. That is what you're seeing right now with Darkfall videos. I'd like to see people PvP witih a newbie UO character and tell me it would be more entertaining than what you see in DF vids.

I played beta, and I've been playing retail. I think melee could use a lot more depth with things like holding/charging attacks, but with a newbie char I still use a lot of tactics. Positioning, knocking people away from banks when they try and stash their shit (full loot baby), feigning in and out to avoid getting hit and attacking during their "cooldown," and obv teamwork in GvG (cycling injured team mates to heal up, etc).

This is with zero advanced skill trees.

Sooooo I've read this entire thread... and I have yet to see a fan say what makes the combat good.  Besides "you wouldn't know if you haven't played it.

I've seen the same thing as other mmos listed only phrased in a way to seem unique. Cycling injured people in and out?  That's the same thing as someone injured running back to the group while other people are constantly going in/dieing.  It's pretty basic to retreat when you are injured.  It's nothing revolutionary.

I've seen dissing on auto attack.  Really.  Do you people honestly think auto attack games are just auto attacking someone over and over.  Try being competitive in WoW arena's, if you want to hit the 2000+ brackets you have to play really well.  just "auto attacking" is a joke.  Let me ask, and I want a honest answer.  What do you do in darkfall, besides circle around someone trying to hit them from behind, or running in and out of melee range "boxing", or firing potshots from range.

You can add more and more people to your combat, but what changes in the actual combat.

You get people who then throw to strawmans "ships and mounts and city sieges zomgozgzogzo"  Great you have other places to do combat.  Let me ask this. how does that affect the actual combat?

I want a detailed answer from a fan, what amkes darkfall combat anything special.  Targetting?  Don't make me laugh, for melee the targeting is the exact same as click and target games, you just have to face the person and be in range when you use your abilities.

slashing, strafing, blocking at right moment, use a melee ability like knockback or powerstrike, run back and switch to staff to cast some heal and mana2stamina, maybe cast a debuff on the person u are fighting, switch back to ur melee, hack him down, run after him, switch to bow and finish him while he is running.

But tbh its really all about group vs group, nothing beats the ability to fight large groups with less numbers and win.

And thats exactly the game play mechanic that makes me shudder. Bit of every role combined into one. Swapping between weapons almost instantly and a insane benny hill chase as you spend the next half an hour slapping your enemies ass with your sword. Bad ... bad naughty enemy....  Sigh...  Just lacks the variety and excitment of M&B.

I am of course yet to see a block. Not that it matters as its not directional so as far as I am concerned it belongs on the other side of the year  2000. Its just the occassional and I do mean occasional RMB press when your tire of the LMB fest.
