Wifi issues

numaticnumatic Member UncommonPosts: 675

Ok im having Wifi issues at my house. I just built a new computer, and my sister has a computer downstairs in the office on the other side of the house. I have a wireless N router (dynex) but it was downstairs next to her comp. I was only on a laptop but in my room the signal quality was very poor and could barely get on so I would end up having to come downstairs with my laptop to get on.

So what I did was buy her comp a wireless card and moved the router and modem into my room for my new comp. Of course now her connection is very weak and she is whining like no tomorrow about it. So to try and work it out, i moved the router to her room (upstairs still) right above her comp. So now she is complaining about the "mess of wires and stuff" in the corner of her room. Like it's going to burn a whole in her carpet.

So i was wondering if anyone else had any other ideas. Cuz i cant think of any. Shes complaining about the router being in her room, complaining about having to run a wire into her room from mine so i can connect (i refuse to use wifi for gaming, too unstable in this house), and even with excellent signal strength where the router is now, shes complaining the internet is too slow (yet all she uses her comp for is getting on webpages for school work). Keep in mind this is her house and im the roomate or I would have told her to suck it up by now.

I really dont want to have to order a second internet connection in this house and shell out an extra $50 a month. I checked about running 2 modems at once and just paying a rental fee for the extra modem but from what I heard it's not possible.

Get stronger antennas for your router and the wireless cards that should help.   With my antenna for my wireless card I can get a good signal from my neighbors wireless.

Oh and did you get a N wireless card?  You should have enough speed cuz its 300mbps and a regular ethernet is only 100mbps.

Move into her room and move her into your room.  Or buy a big stuffed bear, take the stuffing out and put the router in it.

1st You shouldn't have the modem in your sisters room.  The way cables are installed in homes is that there is usually a main wire that comes from the street to a box.  From the box another wire comes inside and is split between 2 mains, 1 for TV and 1 for internet.  Of the TV split, it is then split to every room that gets cable which weakens the strength by the splitter size.  Its best to have the modem where the technician originally installed it.  If you installed it yourself then as direct a connection to the outside as possible.  So that means it should be in her office.

2nd The reason why your signal strength is weak is because of interference caused by metal, glass, or hot electrical wires.  You have to position your computer where it won't have these interferences.  Electrical wires usually run directly to sockets so it should tell you how to position a computer incase of that type of interference.

3rd Having your computer setup in your room isn't always for the best and often leads to unhealthy habits.  If you can set it up somewhere else downstairs closer to the router it would be better.

you also want the antenna parallel to each other.  like:

    |                               |

    or

    /

                             /

     not

    _                             _

    if that makes sense :)

    WHy spend so much money.

Both using a Laptop and a Desktop Wireless internet at then same time tend to make the speed slower for one of them.

They also say it should be near glass

For your situation I cant say much as your sister isnt easy to make happy
