I want to know from current players how is the gameplay.
I DON'T WANT TO TROLL OR START A HATER/FLAME WAR....................
I'm playing Mount & Balde right now(as in this moment) and I would love, literally, to know if the gameplay is exactly the same.
What I mean is:
-Do the character move the same way? Not so fast but no so slow and it also depends on the equipment or encumbrance you have at the moment.
-When you attack with swords is it similar? (I already know DF lacks the 4 dimensional way of M&B but does it look the same?)
-Archery, is it the same? Click to place arrow in bow-release to shoot? (Is there a crosshair?
-Magic I supposed would be the same as archery.
-Horses or any other ground mount, are they the same as normal horses in M&B?
Please keep in mind that I will TRY(Read it again) to play the game in a couple of months, once they have a Trial and more servers. I'm asking because all the videos I try to watch are not pleasant to look upon and sometimes are in fast forward so I can't make my comparison. I don't care if there were 15 topics about this, eventually all those 15 turned into some negative post about how this and that Aventurine and DF is doing this and that wrong.
Comments
-Character run same speed but you can sprint and then it's a bit faster. Encumbrance lowers spell dmg and increases spell failure rate. At greater encumbrance it decreases archery dmg. (most likely they will implement reduced character speed later)
-you can swing sword horizontally or vertically (not to hit friends)
-archery in DF is slightly different. In M&B you have some round area where arrow will randomly hit (gets smaller with skill increase). In DF you have only small cross and there is no random hit. You aim, arrow fly directly where cross was pointed (look at video)
-magic looks same as df archery
-you can't cast spells or use archery while mounted. Although you can use one handed weapons such as swords, clubs and hit enemies while mounted with greatly increased dmg.
The melee and archery components of Darkfall combat are very similar to Mount & Blade. However, I would have to say that Mount & Blade is better at both. Positioning and aiming feel very alike (and are equally important), mostly since movement speed is very similar.
The animations in M&B and Darkfall also share a high degree of similitude-- both are very to the point and minimalist. Some people HATE the animations in Darkfall but I don't get it. I mean I literally do not understand. They don't seem that bad to me... but maybe I just don't pay much attention to them? I played Star Wars Galaxies back in the day and people loved those animations, yet I never gave a crap about them. I just don't care about them.
The archery mechanics in DF are exactly the same as they are in M&B, btw... you press and hold LMB to draw your arrow, and then you release the button to let loose the arrow.
Mounts in DF handle slightly different than they do in M&B. The main difference is that they are more agile. You can make tighter turns on them. Also, you can't use polearms on mounts, as they count as 2h weapons (and no, you can't couch them). You can only use 1 handed weps on mounts. You ride by your target and lean either to the left or the right by pressing either Q or E and you swipe your weapon at them with LMB. You mount can attack in DF, by the way. Each mount has a forward attack and a hind-leg kick attack. I must say that mounted combat in DF is very fun, even if it is different than M&B.
Also, you were correct to assume that magic works the same as archery. The only difference is that you have to select your spell of choice before you can cast it. Hit the corresponding hot key and then press LMB to fire, or press and hold LMB to 'hold' the spell so that you can fire once you are ready to release it (pre-casting).

You make it sound as if there is no arrow arc. To clarify for the OP, I must state that the arrow does not fly directly wherever your crosshair was pointed, but will not deviate horizontally... it will arc corresponding to distance traveled, of course.

yup, overall, archery is better than M&B's (it would have been much better if you have lower accuracy while moving, but w/e), and arrows are not instantaneous either, only for close targets, they are realistic in nearly every respect other than they don't respond to player movement, other than, of course, there are no head hitboxes to aim at (though you wouldn't know this if you never got out of the newbie goblin area) ).
Though Melee pales in comparison to M&B's melee. AV had all the tools in game to make melee at least FEEL a lot like M&B's melee, but they made some horrific no skill monster instead. Again, the reason i won't touch DF for several months is that EVERYTHING in game other than archery and partly magic, are implimented in THE WORST WAY POSSIBLE. The game wasn't finished with beta when it released.

Thanks for the answers. I now have a general idea of how the combat must feel.
From what you guys responded it looks as if running and shooting with the bow doesn't decrease your aim, something M&B does and gives you a big penalty.
It is starnge that they don't allow lances to be used while mounted in horses since that was a high point in medieval war life and DF is basicly a mmorpg with a strong medieval war theme.
Perhaps later on they will make the corresponding fixes to better balance the combat to be more similar to M&B which feels very real at the moment.
Thanks for the answers.
The only thing I'll say is good about Darkfall is the archery, because they've actually made it so that arrows have reasonably realistic gravity and you can even fire them up in the air and they'll come soaring down like you'd expect them to. But even then no one is going to use the only combat mechanic in the game that requires skill because they have many other options that allow them to kill far easier since they do more damage and don't miss as easily.
I'm not flaming here but if you've come to Darkfall for realistic combat like I did I highly recommend moving along, the only reason you want to play this game is for the freedom to gank people ( which even then is highly limited by the magical see-you-anywhere guard towers and the alignment system ) or to get together with clan mates and play a game that rewards only huge clans or long-term subscribers just like EVE Online.
There are no tactics in this game, when I played in beta there was barely any flank damage, everyone was running around with two handed weapons because they did the most damage and they didn't even put attack speeds in properly ( I'm aware this has changed but only slightly from what I've heard ) the melee combat in a nut shell is a joke, the weapons are hardly unique in their hit detection or even animation and you can only attack vertically and horizontally.
In short, I went into this game under the naive belief that Aventurine were catering to people who wanted individual skill to actually mean something, not just through statistics or gear but it seems that half-way through they saw the UO fanbois flocking to the game and decided to turn it into a lame pot spam fest where they thought clicking the left mouse button repeatedly while dancing in circles was some form of skill.
If you want a game with good combat I highly recommend Mount and Blade ( which now has multiplayer and diplomacy hurray! ) and Age of Chivalry, a half-life mod but don't be fooled by it being just a mod, this mod is basically what I was expecting Darkfall to be except smaller.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
Its all one big flame war when ever anyone talks about DF combat especially in realation to a known to be innovative game like MB. The below list was posted by myself elsewhere and the end of a very lond thread.
Below is everything MB has that DF does not.
Finally and these are the killers.
I do not believe for one second that combat in DF is like MB. I believe this was Mr Tasos hyping his game with more unfounded claims.
Also M&B has a gay ..PC dice for me the result and fight an entire battle , button ..DarkFall does not have it you have to win all you fights by yourself ..

So this is your final comment. Yes everything is "gay" to a DF player ! Your dont win fights by yourself because you fanbots have spent ages telling us it s a group game. Time to make your mind up kiddo. What is it ?
Df in a nutshell.
I am in awe of this revolution. Erm... not ! And this is supposed to be the CORE of this frickin overpriced "indie" game. No wonder crafting is even more shite !
