Retired at 40+.?..in this day and age..more than a few people get screwed out of a good portion of retirement benefits if they retired before 60-65...maybe even older. For most companys that is. I'm 40+ and got laid off last year...haven't been able to get with a decent corp that even provides healthcare much less retirement benefits. At this rate I'll be working for the rest of my life with nothing to show for it. Yay economy!!!. I play AoC and Lotro...and WOW and others off and on. Usually no more than 2 a month because that's all i can afford, It keeps me home a lot...away from the trappings of bars and alcohol..which is good b/c i can't afford to drink and besides It would heighten my depression to a level I am better off never reaching...and I actually save money. just don't have much of a life. BOO HOO..lol. I know these things come in cycles. I'm glad I can ease my mind with the games I enjoy playing , while experiencing a little social interaction at the same time...however distant the internet may occasionally seem.
P2P games because I'm tired of playing F2P games where you buy to win. I've never spent a dime in any Free to play game ever. I stick with Guild wars right now.
I'm 54, and I got my first computer in 1977, which was a Commodore PET 2001 - the steel casing jobbie with a tiny built-in monitor, an integral tape drive and a tiny (but qwerty) keyboard. It had 8k of RAM though, which was considered massive. There were no computer stores, so you had to type pages of BASIC listings in to actually run crude games where the graphics were actually keyboard characters. I currently play (to varying degrees, as the mood takes me) Eve Online, WoW and Guild Wars. Apart from Guild Wars, every other F2P game has been total crap... and I've tried LOTS of them. I've played other MMOs over the years, and I'm still looking for new ones to try out.
You just brought a tear & a smile to my heart, I remember the pet2001 always wanted one myself, i also remmeber being up till the wee hours of the morning de-bugging games i had typed from a games book or magzine,( Quebert!) and when I got it working, then it would end up on the self and I would start programing another one,( these were the days where home programing was fun & easy,( sadly gone))
So far this thread seams to be mainly near fourty's or over fourty's, intresting.
Man, I hadn't though of that in years, copying that code, then later, moving memory blocks around in dos to get that new game to run, flood of memories. 53, have played pretty much everything, p2p, not much on the f2p games. one of my all time favs was motor city online, as i like fast cars. Just sort of bouncing around now as the new games don't hold my interest and the older ones are ghost towns compared to their peaks.

31 in a few weeks.
Currently subbed to AoC + lotro. I play a little GW too these days. I also outside of the mmo world play a variety of genres. Games from Crysis Wars, to Empire Total War, to 4Xstrategy games and so on.
Started off writing own games in BASIC on Atari 800XL back in the day with investments in C64, Spectrum, Amstrads, Vic20, Amiga and so on right through even owning a Neo Geo and 3DO lol!
Met the wife in UO for a short while before we moved on, She plays the same mmo's as I do but Lotro more than anything.
37 yrs old, started on my friends spectrum zx81, my first computer was the dragon 32. games would be loaded from a tape recorder or you would by a book and type the program by hand, then followed by many hours of looking for typo's. Then came the BBC micro and a game called elite.
At the moment i am looking for a new mmo, to be honest its going to be a long time before i find my new game. The mmo industry is going down hill imho. Many mmo's are being released unfinished and there still asking for money. For the moment I have been playing Ryzom, an established mmo been around since 2005
My .first computer was the Commodore 64,(1982 or 83),with the gigantic disk drive and monitor. Man .....I remember that thing fondly, Axe of Rage...Deathsword(barbarian)...all the weird EA games..Sword of Fargoal(played from a tape drive)..temple of Asphai,,,Wasteland...Bards tale...and Pools of Radiance as well as otheR D&D based games. Lets not forget ZORK and Leather goddesses of Phoebos...good times.
... These days I'm playing AoC and Lotro mostly but switch around every so often.
30, never played a F2P in my life, P2P all the way. Majority of people in the games I tend to play (WoW, WAR, EvE, AoC) tend to be in a similar age bracket; 25-35. There are a few younger ones and quite a few older ones (up to 65ish) but the average is about 30 ish. We're the Atari/Amiga generation who grew up playing computer games in the late 80s and never stopped.
LOL op you did make me feel old when you said "40+retired or in the process of retirement"
You do know the average age of retirement is around 65?...not really the same.
Anyway 36 here and never play f2p,dont fancy challenging ppl to a "I got more cash than you"fight.
As for right now I am floating around a couple of games right now,not sure if I am looking for something to keep me hooked or just treading water until Aion.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
Actually a stat came out recently...I forget where, that the new average age of P2P is now in the mid 30's and rising...
I fit into that category, as does my partner, and the cook at the local pub, and the receptionist upstairs...lol...just as there are more of us women than you think,...there are also a LOT more older players than you think...many get a real suprise when they first get onto Ventrillo of a large guild.
38 myself. I tried out almost everything P2P and F2P being curious. Played 4+ years SWG and EQ2 and some undefinable longer times CoH, VG and LOTRO. Playing games since Commodore 64 times, but basically I still enjoy single player games more, esp. RPGs but also some strategy games.
fav games of all times: Ultima VII, Civilization II, Sims 2, Might & Magic World of Xeen

I'm 28 and currently not subscribed to an MMORPG, I have tried many over the years though.
My MMO career started with MUDs in the mid 90s to early 00's I tried some everquest 1 in 2000 but found it lacking compared to my MUD at that time :P Even though the graphics were amazing... (but I craved pvp).
After that I tried lineage 2 for a year or so in 2002 maybe.
2005-2008 WoW (first 2 years I had a running sub, last year I only subbed a few months)
2008 Lotro - for about 2 months
2009 - EQ2 1 month.
I also tried Runes of Magic 2009 but found it terribly boring and unpolished so I quit after 3 days.
I'm thinking of maybe resubbing my Lotro account, but I fear I will get bored after a week...(much like when I resubbed to EQ2 last month).
Looking forward to Mortal Online, Aion, Star trek online and SWTOR.
Currently I am playing singleplayer games and online multiplayer on my xbox360 until I can find a MMORPG that is fun again... However I don't see myself quitting gaming anytime soon (not until I'm dead!) so look out when you get ganked by grandpa 85 years old in 2066's holodecks or whatever we have then
I have been playing games as far back as I can remember. Ti Basic and Commodore 64 were probably my first taste of gaming. Ghostbusters, Barbarian, Jumpman and Racing Destruction Set were responsible for making me a gamer until I die.
P2P is all I play, F2P does not appeal to me. I am in a sort of limbo with mmos at this point, I still have accounts active with LOTRO and WOW and I log on once in awhile, but not like I used to. Need a new mmo to spark the fire again.

We are the same age. : ) My first taste of gaming was with the Atari; Pitfall, Frogger, Pong, and my earliest PvP favorite: Combat. I really started to get into gaming though with the release of Nintendo in 1986. I really loved the first Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior. There were many others but those are the ones that I remember off hand. Great times!
I dont like telling my age in-game either because people seem so quick to judge you. I am 40 something myself and even though I am female I am afraid of the shes a perv thing ( Im sure you have heard people critisize others behind their backs about being older than they want you to be).
If you are past 30 you are a perv. If you are younger than 13 then you are too immature. If you are in your mid-teens then you are so and so's age and thats ok. If you are in your 20's then you are awesome and usualy have sometype of leadership role in the guild, ( not that having a leadership role means anything ) but to some they seem to get more respect by others in the guild and others tend to volunteer more if you need a tank for your dungeon group or whatever it is that you need.
You can tell the quality of a person by how they treat people they don't need.
im 33 and although i experiment with F2P MMO's i rarely stay on long. they are either extremely grindy, boring, or both.
I play 99% of the time P2P MMo's . such as WOW, eq2, AOC, Lineage2, VSOH, COH, LOTRO to name a few. i got enough free time currently until i start my job as an EMT in june that i can play freely without worrying about problems such as can i go to that raid next thursday or friday night. i average 2 MMO's subscriptions at a time. either dual accounts or 2 MMO's
