I would drop everything that I'm playing now and dedicate my time/habit to D&DO...I've been playing D&D since first edition table-top...I've had numberous heros and villains in my day...I'm now 30...and I still scout out table-top groups to play with. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw that D&DO is FINALLY being announced...to a point, that is.

I may have some EXTREMELY high standards, for what to expect out of D&DO, so I DO hope it's don well. So, in answer to the thread, yes, I would drop everything I've been playing up to this point...EQ (3 year old account), FFXI (1 year old account), and Neocron (2 year old account)...and anything else, just to play D&DO!!

Genjing- if you knew anything about the traditional pen and paper D&D then you you would know that it fit exactly as an Everquest "clone".

King Behemoth is a notorious monster that spawns in Behemoth's Domain, he is not related to any quests because it takes about 30 to 40 high level people to kill him.

No MMORPG absolutely has to include crafting and/or PvP ....but they will be forced to eventually. Everquest was forced by it's players to include a PvP server. Square had no intentions to ever implement PvP but the players kept demanding it so they added it. The most asked question about CoH is "is PvP implemented yet?". The companies add PvP because it is what the "people" want. Personally, I don't like PvP at all but I do realize that a large number of "people" do.

Genjing, like I said in my first post: you need look at the big picture. The big picture is not solely just what you want. Unless you actually consider the other people that play MMORPGs then there is no reason to continue this.

Um. No. I don't know how you played D&D, but i don't remember camping or killing mob after mob after mob to grind levels. And combat in pnp D&D took way more strategy than evercrap ever did.

I know what King Behemoth is. I played FFXI. But the fact that its a notorious monster spawn doesn't change the original argument. Replace the words mission/quest with task/raid or whatever, it doesn't make a difference.

As i said before, just because it hasn't been done yet doesn't mean its impossible. The gameplay in D&D Online is not like FFXI, Everquest, or CoH. Besides, its not like they said there absolutely will never ever be any crafting, they said it could be released after launch.

Genjing, like I said in my first post: you need look at the big picture. The big picture is not solely just what you want. Unless you actually consider the other people that play MMORPGs then there is no reason to continue this.

You need to stop ignoring whole chunks of my argument and making this sound like my personal problem. I need to consider how other people play? Turbine decides how the game will work, not me. I just support what they currently plan to do, as do many others. You're the one complaining against it.

Therefore it sounds like you're the one that needs to consider other people's playstyles... if you come here complaining that a game must absolutely have crafting, pvp, and random mobs standing around to be camped on.

I entirely agree with genjing on this one. Mindless killing of monsters and huge level grinds are what make most mmorpgs boring and flat. The new way of getting xp DDO is implmenting is much more innovative than sitting on your ass for hours on end hitting a button. In addition i doubt that the devs would give unreasonable tasks..sure you ahve actually have to work a little harder and plan out what your going to do but thats what will attract more people to the game and will make it fun.  Complaining about features that are missing from DDO that make most other mmos suck is entirely stupid and i think your off your rocker Xiaoki. You need to realize that the majority of the people dont want sma e old boring EQ clone crap and that the new things DDO has to offer are much better.

hmm, odds are turbine will totally screw it up, as usual, so i imagine ill stick to WoW for a few years, only other mmo im lookin forward to would be middle-earth online

I have already upgraded my computer 3.06 ghz, 1 gig of ram, 9800 Radeon vid card, and cable internet just so I know my computer will play this game well.  I can't wait for this game.

I am definitely planning to try it out.  I am also watching D&L and a couple others though.  I think if they stick close to the PnP version I'll be hooked, but if they get into class balancing and other various tweaks to make everyone "happy" I'll probably move on.  I personally like the fact that various races/classes have their own strengths and weaknesses and hate the fact that game makers seem to think that every class should be even to avoid whining.  I think that if they deviate significantly from the PnP version it'll be a flop and a huge disappointment.  Just my 2cp. image

not even a little bit. This doesn't look like it will be like D&D at all. Its going to be a completely different type of game set in a D&D world. i'd rather stick a fork in my eye.

    Hello All,

Let me start by saying that I'm an old school PnP AD&D fellow.  In fact I play to this day, teaching my son the game.  And enjoy NWN Platinum Online with him as well.

In this past season of MMO releases, I decided to try something different.  I held off on buying at release both EQ2 and WoW.  I know that these are two wonderful games for many people.  But seeing that I was never sold on original EQ gameplay, mechanics, lore, GUI, nor am I a Warcraft Fantasy fan; I've staved off the hype about these games and saw them for what they are and how they contrast against all the MMOs I've played in the past.  That, btw, might be well enough content and reason for authoring a book.

It's really nice to see a new world like Oberon in use as not to foul up pre-conceived notions we may have of the Forgotten Realms.  I myself would have been really upset to see a company take that content and ruin it completly for me.  IMHO, all of the interpretations of the Forgetten Realms lands in PC Game format thus far have been rather decent and haven't done any critical damage to my mental image and personal translation of the FR-World.

I'm excited to see Turbine have a chance to interpret Oberon for Online consumption.  I am/was not a fan of Turbines' previous games, but it doesn't mean that they will continue to illude me.  I'm certain that they have learned much about what certain games' player-bases want and what these are willing to pay for.

In my mind, I'm positive MEO & DDO will have droves registering and staying on.  Again, I can't say that MEO has any real draw to me since I wasn't really able to play TLoTR PnP until this 2002-3.  After I played for a few weeks with some friends, we quickly returned to D&D since it really is/was the extension of TLoTR Bookset and has done a fantastic job of it over the last 31 years.

Whatever may come of DDO, I will try to enjoy it for what it is.  It's just something new.  I am however not convinced that it will be the Ultimate game.  For that is always left open to personal opinions.

In closing, I will be signing up for this game without a doubt.  Even if I play for a few short months, I am still going to take advantage of trying something new.

    Thanks,

    Carrara

How can you say that the Baldur's Gate series, and NWN are crap??? And how can you compare them to Diablo??? Diablo is a great game, but I wouldn't call it a role-playing game.
People confuse character development in the form of levelling-up with role-playing. I don't class EQ as a roleplaying game. Nobody role-plays, and there's certainly no incentive to.

The Baldur's Gate series in my opinion was the best RPG series ever. It allowed you to make big choices which would affect the course the game took. You could be a righteous knight, or a cold-blooded murderer.

To be honest, I don't have high hopes for D+D Online.. It seems to me that it will be an EQ clone with the D+D label slapped on it. I haven't heard anything about role-playing. What's all this about only getting XP for quests?
Does this mean the game will have a crap-load of static quests, which any number of people can do the same quests again and again? Go to Bob and he'll give you the 'kill the kobold' quest. A year after release, Bob is still handing out the same quest to kill the same kobold which has been killed 1000 times before.
    No thanks.

    BUT!

If they manage to create something akin to Wish, where not a single quests is repeated, and you actually feel like you've accomplished something, then maybe I'll be a bit more optimistic about it.

For me, multiple servers with a small population, combined with static quests are just a big NO NO. If Turbine want to create a game which is truly as immersive as the Pen and Paper games, and even Baldur's Gate (which I loved) they should seriously consider creating a unique MMO. Try something different!!! If you just make another EQ clone, then as far as I am concerned they will have failed.

I agree with nephilim 100%. While EQ is a legendary game there is no need to make more EQ clones. I think EQ2, WoW, and other games have done that perfectly which is the reason I don't play them. I don't have high hopes for any upcoming MMOs, because they will be EQ clones. It will be a long time before this industry will break that cookiecutter design.

look, as long as the game premise is based on some rules variant of D&D it will be great. Granterd it would surprise me if it was based on a D20 system but as long as the feats and skills lists are about the same, it should be big (especially folks who still do the late night gaming sessions the old way.....c'mon 20). I guess we'll see. Peace

I can only hope and pray to Cuthbert, Ehlonna , and Heironeous that they do D&D justice this time around. We'll see..........although it's highly doubtful.

my only online experience is with FFXI adn it got old after a year becuase of the severe dependency on partying, and throughout my years as a gamer D&D has always been popular and so i thought i'd give it a try when it comes out. though i don't have a lot of knowledge of the D&D system i like the magazine ads about the D&D having the biggest and baddest bosses

I apologize but I did not read any of the posts just the topic for this forum

My answer is a very definite Yes! I would leave the other MMORPG's in a heartbeat. I have been a loyal D&D/DM for a long time and when I heard that Wizards and Turbine were coming out with there own version of a MMORPG my jaw just dropped. I then notified all my friends that play a wide variety of MMORPG's and they also told me that they were definitly going to switch to DDO.

It might be the fact that we all during differerent points of the weeks do PNP or LARP together, but I know we have been waiting for something like this for a long time.
